New shoulder pads recommendations

Recommended Posts

I want some new shoulder pads. Currently I have some older(about 10-12 years) Itech Lite 655 pads. They feel too bulky for me. I'd like something that has good protection(mainly for accidental falls) and decent coverage for the back and stomach but not so bulky. I'm 6'2" 175 and play forward in a beer league. My budget is pretty flexible, $60-$100.

I've tried a few pads so far, Sherwood 5030's, Mission M-1's, Itech 255's, and currently using the Vapor XXV. They don't ride up like a lot of others I've used, and they have great protection without keeping me too warm on the ice. Haven't noticed them being bulky. Pretty happy with them, although I wish my Vapor XXV belly pad would stay up so I don't get hit in the lower abs.

The Vector 10 Ovechkin's are awesome. Lightweight, mobile and yet still pretty protective. I immediately noticed a range of motion compared to my supreme 70s of old, which were very good at their price when I got them.

10K's are a very high end shoulder pad and the shoulders are a bit on the bulky side but you can't get better protection. Why not try some middle of the line Easton or Nike/Bauer.( ie SE 16 .,S-7's or Supreme 50s' or 70's.) Decent protection and low profile shoulder pads.

I would look into CCM Vectors... quite comfortable and definitely low profile.

I know you probably don't want to here this, but the best idea would to try several pairs on.

If you can, take a look at the Easton ST-series too. All of them are pretty low profile. The ST4's are nice for the money, and if you want the protection, the ST16's are absolute tanks. Still really mobile though for the amount of protection they have.

I would go farrells if they were cheaper .. what size do you need? I have a pair of pro tacks i could throw at you for dirt cheap depending on where your located.

I wouldn't suggest Farrells if hes looking for "decent coverage of the back and stomach"....My Farrells feel like they don't cover the stomach very well at all.

Some Sherwood 5030 would have decent coverage and definitely won't be bulky....but they might not provide the protection your looking for.

If you can get to a LHS I would atleast try some on.

I also got the Bauer Vapor XXV shoulder pads, and they are the perfect combination of protection and mobility, for me. Solid pads with protection where you need it, but without those extra bicep and rib flaps, etc. that you don't need. Also they are pretty light, and marked down lots of places now.

From a length stand point they run a bit short but going a size up like i did i have great protection all around.

I should have done that. I had a problem with mine fitting snug enough though so I had to stick with a smaller size. They are great shouldies though either way.

I have the 10K's also and like them. Reasonably light and plenty of protection. I had been using Graf G700's which were nice but these are lighter yet. I like the 10K's enough that I put my Graf's up for sale actually. RBK hit the mark with these IMO.

vector v04s are pretty low profile, have good stomach protection, and are pretty inexpensive, also. you can usually find them for around $40. i wear the sher-wood 5030s, but I'm a big guy with my own built-in stomach padding. I like them because they don't make me look like an offensive lineman. they don't have much to offer in the lower rib cage/belly area.

XXXX are low profile and have great protection and in your price range.

Lightspeed are also good but they will look bulky with a jersey on, but the range of motion is still good.

i have been using the new 8k's and they are awesome, the straps feel super nice and they aren't bulky at all, i had the 8000 defenders before them and i thought those were good but my new reeboks are much better. instant break in as well.
