Deeper Helmets

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, I tried searching, but didn't come out with the results I was looking for. I'm running into a dilemma with my helmet not being deep enough. I currently have a bauer 5500, but the helmet doesn't even cover half of my ear with the earpieces in (part of my head with them out) I'll try to post pictures later. Any suggestions on a deeper helmet? thanks

bauers, to me, fit a bit on the shallow side. the reeboks fit deeper to me, but the ccm's seem to fit even deeper yet, at least to me. ymmv.

I have a 5500 too, it just sits on the top of my head. I kinda like it honestly, however a v10 is a very deep helmet. I would try one on, it will probably not be as deep as a v8 though due to the thicker padding. Rbk's fit pretty deep too, a 8k sat around the same as my vector.

^^^^^Really??? My pro stock 8k fits me pretty shallow (maybe its different), almost as shallow as my bauer 5500. I would probably lean towards the s17 or other easton helmets and the ccms if you want a deeper fit.

Is it epp liner or what? Might have just been the fit that it FELT deeper. It sure felt deeper then my 5500 thats for sure. My 5500 feels like its just barely on my head while my 8k felt pretty secured and the ear things went below my ears, my 5500 barely covers them.

Thanks for the replies guys, I'll have to check out the CCM's and Easton's.

Haha, I'll ask Jordan Leopold if he has any spares. :P

If you can't find a Carbster, my second choice would be a Cascade

I don't necessarily agree with this.

I use both a Cascade CHX and RBK 8k - and I can tell you hands down, the 8k is the much deeper of the 2.

I wear a size 8 hat, which is ridiculous, and the RBK 8k (or even 6k) is the only helmet on the market that fits me COMPLETELY comfortably from start to finish of any game, or any drop in session. It's the deepest helmet I've used - and believe me when I tell you, I've had to try them all due to the (unusual) size of my dome piece.

I love the Cascade, but it starts squeezing by the end of games, and I don't consider it a deep helmet at all. At the shallow end of the spectrum, Mission Intakes are so shallow on me, it looks like I'm wearing a yamulke.

That was the deepest fit I've ever had. My V08 is very deep, and a great helmet as well.

Can someone direct me to info on the V08 (I searched), why is it a great helmet and the 2008 Helmet of the Year?

Thanks,

Its comfortable, well ventilated, a good fit and an even better price. I regret getting the v10 over the v8, the v8 is pretty sick. Its vn liner is 10x more comfortable then any epp liner.

Thanks,

There are very few "new" helmets released in a given year, so the pool of potential winners is very small. That said, the V08 was/is well put together and had no real drawbacks in the overall design. It didn't make a lot of promises that it was unable to deliver. There was nothing to fix, it was essentially perfect from day one. I'm also a big believer in VN being "better" than EPP, though I have never seen scientific proof of either offering more safety. My beliefs were formed due to observations and anecdotal evidence only.

How's the V08 compared to the S9 and 5100?

I was less than impressed with the Easton helmets, still have yet to see the 5100 but the 5000 did not fit me well at all.

My Bauer 5100 fits really close to the 4500..I see Bauer has the 4500's back out now under the Bauer label as well. Jarick, are you still undecided on a helmet??

Eh, I don't really need one per se, but I want to try a VN one. I was going to pick up a 5100 but they're $20-30 more locally than online, and now I see great feedback about the S9 and V08.

I've had the both the Mission and Bauer. I am currently using the Easton S9, definitely the most comfortable and the deepest fitting of the 3.

EPP absorbs more energy, and is thus more protective. There has been scientific work done, there's a reason EPP foams and their variants are used in virtually every high impact helmet these days (Bike, motorcycle, racing...).

VN does recover from impacts better though. EPP can break, though not as easily as the EPP formulated for bike helmets, which is even more protective, but will break with one impact. Once EPP breaks, it's useless. VN survives that, but becomes less protective as it hardens with age.

Neither material is perfect. I do want to learn more about FXPP though, the stuff used in the 9500. According to the Bauer people (via an old post in the 9500 thread), it's supposed to absorb 20% more energy then the EPP currently used in helmets and is supposed to reduce fractures.
