Iconic sports moments

Recommended Posts

While I was making a longer drive today, I started thinking that sports really leads to indelible memories for many of us. Maybe this is because we're fans of the participants, or maybe it's because we've seen a particular photo or sequence repeated often over the years.

Without trying to list these in order....yet....here are some I've remembered.

Fisk's homer

Schilling's bloody sock

Jim Craig draped with a flag

Kurt Gibson pumping his arm after his homer

Cassius Clay taunting Sonny Liston (I think)

Bobby Orr flying through the air

Tommie Smith's and John Carlos' Black Power salute at the '68 Olympics

Dwight Clark's "The Catch"

Pete Rose barrelling into Ray Fosse in the '70 All Star Game

Bird stealing the ball and passing to DJ

Magic's Baby Hook

A-Rod's Hamburger Helper gloves

The Michigan wraparound goal

Jeter's backhanded toss to beat Giambi

Ripken circling Camden Yards during his record breaking game

Jordan's game-winning shot

"Havlicek stole the ball! Havlicek stole the ball!"

All the flashbulbs during Vinitieri's kick

Jim Valvano looking for someone to hug after NC State won

Lou Gehrig's Luckiest Man speech

I know there are thousands more, but these are some I quickly recalled. Please add your favorites.

The earliest I recall was "the catch" but the one that I will always recall is Cody Webster hitting the longest home run I've ever seen at the little league world series. According to google earth it was around 350' and landed on the hill 30' above home plate. At the time, the fence was 210' from the pate. Here's a writeup on it from SI:

EDIT:

For a hockey tie-in Pierre Turgeon and Stephan Matteau were on the 1982 Canadian LLB world series team.

Also:

Mitch Williams giving up the homer to Joe Carter

Christian Laettner game winner

Doug Flutie to Gerard Phelan

Cal - Stanford "the play"

There are so many....but going only on ones I actual saw:

"For the first time ever, the World Series Banner will fly North of the border" (Jays WS #1)

"Touch 'em all Joe..." (Jays WS#2)

Tigers chip/roll.

Don Beebe's head bounce. <----- no so much 'iconic' just a visual I will never forget.

Uhhhh, Miracle, 1980. lol, thought it would be one of the first listed, oh well, I said it.

That's what I was referring to with "Jim Craig draped with a flag."

I had Laettner's winner, Chadd, then wasn't sure if it was iconic enough, so I erased it. However, since someone else added it, it obviously qualifies.

Certainly, the "agony of defeat" crash is something we've seen over the years, and I suspect Michael Phelps' touch to win the butterfly last year will be played at every Olympics. It seems it's easier to remember baseball's moments, which might have something to do with it's slower pace. For instance, I remember Freddie Patek (I believe) sitting by himself crying in the dugout after the Royals had either lost the WS or ALCS.

I share a lot of Jason's memories. Here a few more:

Messier lifting the Cup for the Rangers

Yzerman handing the Cup To Konstantinov in a wheel chair

Eli Manning and the Giants winning the Super Bowl

Scott Norwood-wide right on FG in Super Bowl, Giants win

Joe Namath beating the Colts in SB III

Reggie Jackson's HRs against Dodger's 77 WS

Bucky Dent's HR against Red Sox in playoff game

Gretzky and Oilers first Cup win against Islanders

Dale Earnhardt's death in Daytona 500, 2001

Packers beat Dallas in Green Bay, first Ice Bowl, clearly remember watching that game. we worshipped at the altar of Vince Lombardi in those days.

For me it was mostly the stuff from my early childhood that stands out. The older I get, the less iconic things seem to be. Most of my picks are from a very narrow window of time.

Dave Roberts steals second base.

Mo Vaughn's great open field tackle on a guy charging Clemens.

Varitek and the "we don't throw at .260 hitters" fight with A-Rod that started the Sox on fire.

B's finally beating the Habs in the playoffs.

The tuck rule play. (You never saw a bar go from so low to so high in a matter of seconds. Folks went from paying tabs to ordering another round in record numbers.)

Aside from being a Duke fan, I have it because it's easily the most memorable shot in college BB.

Holy hell...on a hockey site, how did I leave out:

The Forum closing. The parade of Captains with the torch...the ovation for Rocket Richard at Center ice....

and...

Saku Koivu's return from Cancer with 3 games left in the Regular season. That ovation was spine tingling.

Robin Ventura running into a perfectly executed headlock and then proceeding to be punched by someone nearly twice their age.

Watching teams that play in cities that recieve no snowfall hoist the cup, while Toronto keeps wondering what happened. ;)

And most hated around here. I love watching it tho...

Tyree's catch

Tiger's fist pump at the end of the 2006 British open

Phelps olympics last year

James Blake/Andre Agassi 2005 US Open (especially considering the injuries and all blake had in 2004)

Pujols' HR in the 2005 NLCS off of Lidge

Totally meant to throw that one in there, too. I was on the phone with my best friend at the time - actually called the shot.

"Dude - Pujols is gonna take him out right here."

2000, dude.

Aw, fuck me - I don't know where my head was at.

As long as we're talking about New Jersey winning The Cup...Mike Peluso fighting (and losing to) tears on the bench towards the end of Game 4 of the '95 Finals.

I was about 6 years old at the time, jumping on the couch in excitement when I saw Mike on the bench making an effort to cover his face. I said "Dad, why is Peluso crying?"

My dad just shook his head and said "He's been waiting for this his whole life."
