farhanshak 1 Report post Posted September 15, 2009 Hey Guys and Galsi couldnt find anything that could affirm some of the "warriors" on this board.i thought i would start a topic about playing through injuries(i dont condone this).so what sort of injuries and illnesses have you played through?here is my listPlayoffs: ive played with a beat up knee, caught a rivet in the ice while turning and it twisted on me. out for two months with rehab (after the playoffs).Playoffs: Blocked a shot with my left hand index finger (this summer) still cant close my hand properly and my backhand is inflamed most days. no fracture, just some muscle inflamation...1 month and counting.regular season: went into the boards as i was tripped on a breakaway and didnt want to nail the goalie, went feet first and tweaked my ITB band.regular season: have played with the flu quite a few times to try an "sweat it out" and i regretted it the next day. Slapshot9123 0 Report post Posted September 15, 2009 Just about every hockey player I know has played through a cold or the flu.As for me I played all of state playoffs and the midwest regionals 2 years ago with a torn ac joint. Really regretting it after making it worse and getting surgery but at the time we had a legit shot at nationals and I was one of the few players that actually played on the roster

noodle3872 40 Report post Posted September 15, 2009 PneumoniaFever of 103Various muscle pullsPartially torn rotator cuffGeez, now that's a laundry list of injuries!!! I've had sore muscles and such, blocked shots with my ankles, had sticks/pucks collide with my face (some intentional, some not) but nothing horrible enough to be called an "injury".Mike
Chadd 916 Report post Posted September 15, 2009 I have a pretty serious concussion right now and I've actually considered trying to play a couple times. Fortunately those thoughts don't last long. I really don't want to end up as a vegetable just for a beer league hockey game.

mrruin 0 Report post Posted September 15, 2009 so far nothing serious happened to me during a season. The usual colds, flu and strained ligaments/muscles apply. I hope it stays that way for a long time to come. The one thing I dont want to go through is a torn ligament or a back injury.
cougarkiller98 0 Report post Posted September 15, 2009 When I was playing competitive hockey, i played with a broken thumb. I had them mold the cast so i could somehow hold a hockey stick. Had to cut up an old glove to fit it on my hand. Also had stitches and staples in the side of my head that i played with. Now that im just playing beer league i had to quit for about a year for back surgery. After awhile I couldnt even push off with my left leg or hop the boards/
kovyperron5727 0 Report post Posted September 15, 2009 -Bronchitis-Broken fingers-Torn shoulder ligaments-Broken toes-I played with 2 ruptured discs, took some time off and played 1 more game. I was in so much pain I couldnt sit on the bench I kneeled down. I also had a friend tie my skates. Best part is though I pulled a toe drag on their dman and came in alone and set up a goal for a teammate. I also only played about 5 minutes the whole game until I told my coach I just couldnt go on. I now am getting surgery on my back
eric42434224 1 Report post Posted September 15, 2009 I know it doesnt sound like much, but I played with a massively ingrown toenail. Those f-ing things really hurt....especially when they get infected.
Chadd 916 Report post Posted September 15, 2009 I know it doesnt sound like much, but I played with a massively ingrown toenail. Those f-ing things really hurt....especially when they get infected.I crushed my big toe moving some PA speakers almost 20 years ago and every couple weeks since then I have to get out some scissors and needle nose pliers to prevent the nail from becoming too in-grown. If I ignore it for too long, the pain gets pretty bad.

Cams 7 Report post Posted September 15, 2009 Chadd, I almost played through a concussion in a beer league, but my girlfriend (now my wife) talked me out of it. Some idiot drove me head first into the ice in a Sunday AM beer league game, missed a couple weeks. I've played through many sprained knees, a sprained wrist, and the worst was actually shoulder tendinitis - got no power/strenght at all on my shots.

LkptTiger 1 Report post Posted September 15, 2009 Off the top of my head, I can think of instances when I've played through concussions, a broken foot, a broken hand, cracked ribs, torn ligaments, partially torn patellar tendon, cartilage/ligament issues in the other knee, partially torn muscles in my back, abs and legs, pulled groin (chronic - stayed with me for a LONG time), misaligned vertebrae in my neck, lots of stitches, broken nose, bronchitis....etc., etc.Just got back from the doctor/hospital today - apparently I've had pneumonia for almost two weeks now and have been on the ice every day (although, admittedly, I've just been "going through the motions" since I've been sick). I'll probably be off the ice for the next couple days while the antibiotics run their course and hopefully get me feeling somewhere close to normal soon.Playing while hurt/sick is not one of the things I will miss once my competitive career is over. farhanshak 1 Report post Posted September 15, 2009 i forgot to add a few things lolingrown toe nails can be a huge "B"back home i was playing cricket and got hit with the bat (hit myself idiot) right in the toe and now i have to cut it as well every month or it starts to go through my toe.also i played 3 months with a grade one ankle sprain. got tied up with my D partner and the guy we were covering, all 3 of us fell, luck for me, when i fell my right ankle stayed upright and my left shoulder touched the floor...nothing broke though. 3 months of physio and alot of hot cold therapy and i was good to go. it was funny when i limped into er and they saw my foot which looked like a football...doctors exact words "i am sending you str8 to x-rays, i dont even need to look closer. that thing is probably broken all over the place."Off the top of my head, I can think of instances when I've played through concussions, a broken foot, a broken hand, cracked ribs, torn ligaments, partially torn patellar tendon, cartilage/ligament issues in the other knee, partially torn muscles in my back, abs and legs, pulled groin (chronic - stayed with me for a LONG time), misaligned vertebrae in my neck, lots of stitches, broken nose, bronchitis....etc., etc.Just got back from the doctor/hospital today - apparently I've had pneumonia for almost two weeks now and have been on the ice every day (although, admittedly, I've just been "going through the motions" since I've been sick). LkptTiger 1 Report post Posted September 15, 2009 holy smokes. i thought i had a decent list lol but this definitely takes the prize.get well soon from the pneumonia. There is no prize, believe me, lol. That's just the price of playing the game. There really is no way to escape it - you're going to get banged-up playing hockey. The ABILITY (it's not really a choice) to play through the pain is one of the things that separates players at different levels of the game. I can name a bunch of guys I've played with and against who have lists much, much longer than my own. Aside from the major knee blowout and a few concussions, I've been relatively lucky...and definitely dodged a few bullets when I stayed in the line-up at the risk of making some of those minor scrapes and bruises worse. Ultimately, it's not a test of how "macho" a player can be. Everything always comes down to the question "Can I help my team?" If the answer is "yes," you pop a few pills, maybe get stuck with a needle or two and get on the ice. Everyone plays hurt once in awhile.

I don't know how some of you played with broken/torn wrists before.I have been dealing with a nagging injury to my wrist for about 3 months. After a visit to my doctor, he told me I had severly strained, and possible slight tear, to my tendon(s). He put me on anti-inflamatory medication, as well as an anti-inflamatory topical rub. He also told me to heat up the wrist in very hot water and stretch it out before games. Then he told me to bring an ice pack to the game and ice it immediately after getting off the ice in the locker room. And to wear a tight wrap or brace when playing....and no weight lifting for a while. I have seen an immense improvement in just 1-2 weeks. Not sure if this will help, but it might. The anti-inflammatory meds were actually primarily for my shoulders (frayed labrum, bursitis, etc) and it has helped there as well. Looking for a solution that will get me off cortizone shots, but less invasive than surgery.
