SPray Painting a stick

Recommended Posts

Im looking to spray paint a stick black, the WHOLE stick black. Some people say black tape ruins gloves, and i was wondering if black paint would also. So i was wondering if anyone here had any expierience in the matter.

Has anyone just sanded down to the carbon weave?

As thin/crappy as the paints are, a few quick passes with some 400 grit ought to get you to the epoxy. Then you can just throw some clear on that and keep your few grams of savings!

Use some sandpaper to sand every part of the stick that will have paint on it. Paint will not stick well at all to a slick surface, so the sandpaper roughens it up a bit. Choose and use a quality spraypaint in a layer or two. Clearcoat over top. Done.

That would be a sweet look. Wasn't there an NHLer who used sticks like that, with no graphics? Or did he just spray paint all his?

Anyway, I've never really felt a need to change the graphics of any stick, but to each his own.

I tried to do that to an S11. Worked well on the blade, bu it was really hard to get all the paint off the shaft. Now my stick looks like crap. I tried to paint it before, but it deadenned the feel, so I just sanded it back off and went with one very ugly stick.

Yes, think about what a grip COATING is... A coating. It will eventually peal off and take the paint with it. You need to paint on a surface that is solid for it to last more than a little bit... Now with that being said, you might be able to clearcoat the grip surface to take away some of the tackiness.

I did this with my grip SE16. After a few ice times, the paint was chipping at an alarming rate, so while bored one day in my room I just picked and peeled the paint and graphics right off. Was pretty easily done too. Then I just took a can of flat black spray paint, and coated the entire stick. Didn't chip much at all, and no paint rubbed off on my gloves (since the paint was dry before using). The paint is wearing down around the edges of the shaft, but that's expected. Keep in mind, spray painting the stick wipes away the warranty.

I tried painting one of mine white ala Wisniewski and thought it sort of impacted the feel too. Maybe it was more the texture of the paint being more smooth than a normal stick surface. That makes me wonder if grip versions of sticks sort of lose their feel. By the way I didn't use a clear coat, not sure how necessary that is since you know you're going to get slashed eventually.

I've painted my stick white using this Krylon for plastic. I did not sand or do any prep to the stick, just made sure it was clean, and sprayed it. I did not use clear coat over the paint.

It worked really well and really didn't chip until the stick was hacked repeatedly.

I did mine in white and used white tape on the blade, apparently goalies hate that.

I sprayed a One95 with white half way up the shaft with Rustoleum Textured spray paint. It chipped rather fast but gave the stick a nice light grit finish. 1 coat of paint and 1 coat of clear coat--but it still chipped off pretty quickly.

I felt like the only reason the feel was deadenned was because I painted the handle, I've painted other sticks from blade to midway with no issues. Could be all in my head though,

^did you sand first? It's all in the prep...

I did do a light sand. The chips are from pretty merciless stick work from myself and others.
