Sharpening

Recommended Posts

In SE Michigan, I would say the Playmaker Pro Shop inside the Ice Box in Brownstone is by far the best, I know a lot of people here are real high on the place in Orchard Lake but Brownstone is a lot closer if you're south of Detroit like I am. He used to have a shop in the rink in Wyandotte and one in downtown Wyandotte but I think the pro shop is it right now. I've never had a problem.

In the Grand Rapids area, the Play It Again Sports on 28th used to be pretty good (I actually worked there in 2008-09), but the store has since been sold and I don't know how their sharpening services have been affected.

I agree with the Playmaker Pro Shop I played out of the ice box for a while and those are the only people i'll trust my skates with.

Also in Southeastern Michigan don't go to Perani's or PIAS both in Taylor

Yeah, Peranis Taylor sucks, as does Peranis saginaw, but Peranis Livonia does a good job. Another place I like to go was Ace sports in Livonia, but that was bought and they are now a part of the D&D bicycle and hockey shop on Middlebelt. Still give good sharpenings.

in and around BC:

sechelt/gibsons: source for sports, good, offers FBV. they did it right and hired guys specifically to do skates.

north van: time out source for sports: ok. they offer ROH and BM's flat bottom. larry's: excellent, they are pros.

burnaby: 8 rinks: the old dude is amazing but he'll talk your ear off about 'the good old days' he also tries to convince you that your skates need work, as this is his real business and the sharpening gig is how he gets customers. scoffs: good

Vancouver: sports exchange: most of the guys are good, will do any radius you want, others don't even

know what radius means. if u go there, ask for a specific radius and if you get a glazed over look, ask for someone else... they won't be offended, the new guys always sharpen skates b/c the vets are lazy. cyclone Taylor: good, usually have to wait a while. g-Max: horrible guy, horrible machine. looks maniacal when using cross grinder, and the worst part is that he actually thinks he's good at it.

Richmond: cyclone Taylor: good and quick. these are the kind of guys who understand "I've gotta be on the ice in 5 min. hook me up"

surrey: the hockey shop: FBV and ROH. great experiences on both. some of the guys that work back there are social butterflies and are engaged in full on conversation during the sharpening, and sometimes the results show a lack of attention.

coquitlam: cyclone Taylor: not bad. had some great results and some shitty results. rocket rods (delta & coquitlam): he's a stickler but his staff aren't. if he's there you're in business, if not it's a toss up. standard ROH is 3/8, charges $2 more for "custom"

pretty much everyone across the board charges $5 for ROH, and $8 for FBV.

I'll post more if I can think of any that I've been to recently.

My last sharpening was at Perani's in Taylor and I haven't had a problem, actually. Maybe I just got lucky.

On Long Island they are ok.

Best on LI - Mike at Sports Plus and Stan's son at the Rinx.

Can also try - Iceland Proshop and Dante or Andrew Cozzi - NOT Mrs. Cozzi.

Do NOT to Whealling Willie's, Play it Again (either locations sucks)

Not a fan of the bathtub at Hockey Underground and I haven't tried the hand sharpener yet.

Hockey Underground is alright at best I think that thing does only 1/2 and 3/8 which is what got me on 3/8 then Frank convinced me to try 7/16 becuase I'm a bit light for 3/8 and he was right idk I've always gotten a good job from there. I also forgot the Rinx I don't see how I could have they do a great job aswell

Any sharpening recommendations in the Philadelphia/South Jersey area? Lots to choose from, for sure. Who among them have the best reputations? I see all the Flyers Skate Zone locations are 'Maximum Edge' shops. They all the same?

Thanks.

The shop in Atlantic City is alright. In general I find their whole rink to be run kind of weirdly, for example I ask them when the pro shop will be opened to get my skates sharpened and they say they don't even know... then when it is open, they don't answer the phone or only stay open for like 2 hours.

However, back to the sharpening. Its okay; with the younger guy, the edges are uneven and he doesn't ask how you want them sharpened, but the older man is a bit better. IMO look for somewhere else.

Hockey Experts in Mississauga stands behind their sharpenings 100%

The little pro shop inside Cawthra arena will get you a top notch skate sharpening in Mississauga.

Denver:

Go: Players Bench The Tamarac Players Bench is currently the only store in CO with FBV service

Don't Go: PIAS or Breakaway sports. I also avoid any sharpeners at the local rinks.

Calgary, Canada

Go:

Hockey Experts (Deerfoot Mall is better than Deerfoot Meadows) $4 for FBV or traditional

Adrenaline or Tuxedo Source for Sports (bit more expensive for sharpening that HX does as well or better) $7-11ish

Professional Skate

Done Right Sports

Don't Go:

Pro Hockey Life - $5 is too much for an almost always bad sharpen

B&P Cycle - never liked the sharpen there

In conclusion, you can't beat Hockey Experts at Deerfoot Mall. Cheap, fast and the staff stand behind the sharpen all the way.

Figure skaters spend upwards of $30 for a sharpen.

Hand finish with bullet stones = 20, 30 minutes of work to complete a pair of competitive level figure blades.

In Los Angeles

GO:

Toyota Sports Center (Carrie sp? does a great job, pretty much everyone else does as well...)

CRAPSHOOT:

Pickwick Ice - (Fine if it's Brian or the head honcho there, not so much the other folks...)

DON'T GO:

HockeyGiant or HockeyMonkey

How sad, monkey used to be the place to go, sucks to hear its bad now. When I worked there, we took a lot of pride in sharpening skates well.

Haha I'm pretty sure the old guy your talking of is Artie. But he is the real deal. He used to be and NHL equipment manager, does some of the Canucks' skates(including Lou's). And there's one at Ice Sports, they do quite good and very quick if in a pinch.

DID some. the last time he touched a canuck's skate was when mark messier was in town.

I've seen people charge the same amount and not even do that. Perception is everything, especially in the figure market.

There are people like DS50's partner, who is world-renowned. And the majority do the same job or worse than hockey sharpeners. But the common denominator is the figure skater. It's never their fault when something goes wrong. :)
