How much do refs make?

Recommended Posts

Thinking about possibly getting into reffing and was curious as a starter how much you can make per game. Any tips or anything to someone wanting to be a ref? This won't be a career or anything

Depends on the league and level. I've received as little as $22 for squirt games and as much as $50 for midget.

That is pretty similar to my experience over the last ten years or so. High school games top out around $70 now if I remember correctly, I haven't worked any games in a long time.

Like they said, it depends on the league and location. Up here, it's a graduated system where Mite games will get you roughly 15 per ref per game (USAH) on up to 35-40 per game. But if the other ref doesn't show, you get his fee as well. That rule of thumb goes all the way up into our men's league too. They get 30 per.

just curious. how much do nhl refs make?

Full time refs start out around six figures, linemen a little less. Veteran guys obviously make more.

Holy, I thought the money was good here in Vancouver, but guys in the states are making $70 a game!

Our system is as follows

Atom - 18, 13, 13

Peewee - 25, 15, 15

Bantam - 32, 24, 24

Midget - 38, 27, 27

Juve - 45, 30, 30

Either way it's great to get into, and definitely is some nice money on the side.

Not sure about there but since our payment comes from a local association, we have to pay our own taxes on the income. That's a decent percentage right off the top, though you can deduct any expenses and mileage off the top.

The best piece of advice I can give you is try to become the type of referee YOU would want reffing your games. Don't do it just for the money, and if you choose to follow through with it, you MUST give every game 100%. Don't be that guy that everyone bitches about and gives us all a bad name! :D

Or you hope the guy running the league doesn't 1099 you.

We have a local organization that controls all of the officials in the area. All games have to be scheduled through them or they will not get USA Hockey officials. They have threatened at least one of the local beer leagues that going outside the organization would result in black listing any official that chooses to work their games. There is no accountability for the organization, as there are no meetings and no voting on issues or positions. In short, they do whatever they damn well please and if you want to work a game within an hour of here, you have to pay them for the privilege and do things their way.

I'm sure the USA Hockey stuff around here is run similarly. I know that the NIHOA (high school) stuff is a nightmare from the stories I've heard from guys who have done them. I kept low key doing Select leagues and men's leagues. They didn't care about USA hockey officials.

I was one of the few that was happy doing beer league and some junior high stuff from time to time. It was always funny to hear guys that were poor skaters or completely unable to control their emotions (why are they always cops or teachers?) complain about not getting varsity games. I told a couple that they weren't qualified to do the games they were getting, so they might not want to complain much.

Refs can easily take control of a situation like that, I am far from a union type but organize with a ref assignor and the local association must work with that cotact who then fairly distributes (assigns) games. The governing bodies prefer that system as it precludes local associations from assigning 'homers' to work important home games for minor league travel teams. The highest rated refs should be getting the important games, that minor league system in place is then used for mens rec leagues that are sanctioned.

This might be a good start.

http://www.bchockey.net/Officiating/officiating.aspx

Darn enter button.....

We have a number of Zones that govern/control officiating round these parts. You register through them, attend a clininc and then start at the Community level, gradually working your way up to more competitive levels. I did a quick query on BC hockey to get the web page above. I suspect that there will be a similar system in place in B.C.

Remember 2 things as you work your way through "Fair and Safe" I've seen too many games in the last couple of years where one or both of those basic tenets from Hockey Canada have gone out the window!
