rachael7 1 Report post Posted April 11, 2010 That's exactly what I found out. I feel like a shorter stick also promotes better knee bend. At least for me it does.+1 Same for me. Stick right at the chin in bare feet. Helps keep me skating and shooting from a lower, more powerful stance. Obviously helps with stickhandling too, by unlocking the top elbow. But I still get questions from coaches periodically who think its too short... that old 'tip of the nose' measurement still seems to be the benchmark for a lot of people. gxc999 7 Report post Posted April 11, 2010 I'm thinking about going a little shorter after some recent knee issues. I've had real trouble with my hands lately, so I am considering all options.
tarmogoyf 2 Report post Posted April 11, 2010 When I started playing I always did the tip of the nose thing. But, as I advanced as a player, I eventually moved down to it being at about mid chin off skates. For me, it is most comfortable. That said, I would recommend keeping it at whatever feels best for you.
fiimb 1 Report post Posted April 12, 2010 important thing to keep in mind when cutting a stick down is right off the bat shooting will suffer, but thats only cause your used to shooting a longer stick and need to adjust to the shorter stick. its the same as getting a new pair of skates that put you on your toes/heels
chanxebyshev 8 Report post Posted April 14, 2011 6'2'', barefoot my stick comes just above my nose. 67.5 inches including the blade, shaft is 61 inches from heel to top. This is a lot more helpful.Telling me where your stick comes to without telling how long it is with and without the blade is useless. About 64.5 inches from heel to end cap.Height = 5'11Yes, the stick is as tall as me - thats how I like it. Considering going longer... I use a pro stock blade with a lie 4 and lots of rocker as well. I think about them every day!Haha, I get a lot of comments like that! There are some players that are 6'5+ that are always amazed. Whenever I play a new hot-shoe player or team they always learn quick that you can't come within 4-5 feet of me without likely getting a poke check of some sort. Damn thing is that they learn quick and expose my triangle fairly quick (add the fact that interference calls in non-check games are called tight too). The Spezza's are awesome. I am glad I bought four! They are holding well with the constant rotation.

DumpN'Chase 1 Report post Posted April 15, 2011 I just switched to a shorter stick. My blade wasn't completely sitting flat on the ice. I miss the reach i had, but everything else has seemed to improve. Fair trade if u ask me :)

DumpN'Chase 1 Report post Posted April 15, 2011 It took me a little bit to get use to shooting. I'm sure after awhile ull notice the same.
jazz4all 9 Report post Posted April 15, 2011 shorter stick is great for stick handling for me. i like it just at my lips, barefoot. so on with skates that would be below the chin. however, stick lie still makes me confuse. using 5.5 i can skate a bit upright, while one lie 5 i had to really bend my knees, and placement of the puck is kinda awkward. Also, I've recently switched from a PM9 to P92 curve, same reported lies but I had to take nearly 2 inches off my stick just to get the lie proper. I've learned that it's less about the numbers on the sticks... more about how it feels.
gxc999 7 Report post Posted April 16, 2011 I've gotta say that the main factor in stick handling is your style of dribbling far more than anything else. If you have a really short stick, it's going to be impossible to go wide on most defenders and with a really long stick, it's hard to do pull in moves for basically everyone. You've kind of got to find the right style of controlling the biscuit and lie, length is kind of secondary in my mind.
Shadow 0 Report post Posted April 16, 2011 Mine is right under my chin (without skates), I still think the more important one is the lie so that you're comfortable with your stick flush to the ice at rest.
Beflar 53 Report post Posted April 19, 2011 It's funny but everytime I read this post I shorten my stick a little, and everytime it greatly improves my stickhandling. It's scary how 1.5 inches can make such a huge difference. I went from nose height to mid-mouth in socks and it was night and day. I'm almost mad I waited to do this. It's just hard to cut a 300 dollar stick...

Stoop 1 Report post Posted April 19, 2011 If stick length makes such a difference, I assume that you guys always keep your top hand at exactly the same spot on the end of the stick. Does your pinky finger lay against the knob? Over it? Off the end of the stick? Just curious.

gxc999 7 Report post Posted April 19, 2011 This is why it's so difficult to give advice on stick length/lie - it's a whole complex between your body type, skating and playing style, lie, rocker, length.....Indeed it is. I personally feel stick handling is more important for my game and is why I prefer a longer stick. I've felt like it's easier to take some shots in motion with a shorter stick but I hated losing the reach on moves when I go around people and break up passes etc.
