Eagle X88 Gloves

Recommended Posts

Searched, but couldn't come up with anything here (probably didn't look hard enough...)

But how do the Eagle X88 gloves fit compared to say the Bauer 4-Rolls? I wear a 13" 4-Roll, but I know those tend to run a little large and that Hockey World sale is calling my name, but they only have 14" for the X88's.

I had both X88's and 14" 4-Rolls (but I did not have them both at the same time). The X88's did feel slightly longer in the backrolls and cuff. Finger length seemed the same. The X88 is a 14.5, so that makes sense.

In terms of volume, the 4-Roll's seemed to fit a little tigher, although I only used them once (bought XXXX Pro's an 4-Rolls at the same time and liked the Vapors better) and never really broke the liner in. From memory of comparing them new-to-new, the volume was fairly similar.

The X88 was a great glove, but caused me a lot of wrist pain. I bend my wrist forward quite a bit (I use a very long stick for someone of my height) and the X88's did not allow that. The Bauer's did allow that.

I had portofino X88's and bought them for $180. Tufftek X88's at $120 is a steal and a half... wish they had a more mobile wrist guard for me though :( . The build quality was the best of any glove I have owned as was the protection.

FYI.. the Eagle gloves for $120 don't include MSH2. They have "pro-palms", which I think means nash. Therefore the difference between these pro stock gloves and Eagle retail gloves is durability.

The "pro stock" x88s have msh2 overlay and gussets. I just put on a 14" 4roll on one hand and an 14" x88 on the other. The bauer glove is more slim in the palm/fingers while the x88 is fighter in the backhand. The cuff on the x88 is a little restrictive and just seems longer than other 14" cuffs while playing.

I called Peranis 2x (talked to 2 customer service reps) and they told me the gloves don't have MSH2.

I bought the gloves from them and the tufftek ones definitely have the msh2 overlay up the thumb and the msh2 gussets.

Well, that is interesting. I asked about X72 and X88. Maybe only the X72 gloves are missing the MSH2? I'm not calling a third time to confirm. :)

Do these things loosen up ?!

Got mine today - Perani's $120

fits tight all over - very stiff thumb - has the msh overlay exactly where I have holes in all my other gloves.

Am thinking about returning them - but, I will wear them around the house a few days

Cannot imagine how anyone could walk out with these after paying $180 + tax

Mine did loosen up, especially once you start to sweat in them. The lock thumb most likely won't, because it's hooked under the cuff. I wish it had no lock thumb like my X72's. I like mine an awful lot though, although I think the Nash palm is a bit thick. I wouldn't mind a full MSH2 repalming on them at some point.

My tufftek X88's were very flexible out of the box. My leather X88's are still pretty stiff after a dozen games.

I just received mine from Perani's (they do have the MSH2 overlay). I guess I also wasn't fortunate enough to get one of the flexible pairs but I am glad to hear that they will break in. How's the breathability on the tuffteks? Mine main complaint with my V08's is that they seem to get very warm as I play.

I bought a pair of the portofino X88's from Perani's and love them. I can confirm the MSH2 overlay. Great fit out of the box and they get better with wear. I would describe the fit as an 'ergonomic' classic 4 roll. In short, the fit is snug through the palm and the fingers/gussets are tapered. No excess space in the glove like a Warrior Franchise. the protection is phenominal with the lock thumb and plastic overlays. I like the cuff much better than the cuff on a warrior Franchise. I think it's a better design and built to flex with your wrist. The best glove deal I'm aware of. When and if the palm goes, I'll have it replaced with MSH2's. Last the X88 is available in 13, 14, and 14.5. The gloves Peranis has are 14". Get them while you can.

I think when they first came out, they were only available in 14.5". I tried them on then and the fingers in that glove were too long for me. Anyway, the 14" that Peranis carries is perfect for my hand. Check out Eagle's website for more information.

Can anyone confirm the above post? Eagle catalog says x88s are only 14.5" If they are actual 14" gloves, that would be amazing.

That would be amazing! I had the same troubles you were. I saw on the Perani's web site that the drop down menu only showed 14", but the Eagle web site only had a mention of 14.5"...

I've had them since the week they came out. I love these gloves...comfortable and very protective. I seem to hacked on the hands alot and these gloves have protected me without a worry. I'd say you can't go wrong with them.

I have owned both pairs, although they were a year apart from each other and I never owned both at the same time...

The X88 seemed to have a wider forehand fit and slightly shorter fingers than the PPF.

What I did not like about my personal X88's was the inside wrist guard (it was tall/long and since I had the Porto version - it was fairly stiff). I bend my upper wrist a fair amount. The gloves gave me a lot of wrist pain and when I switched to Vapor XXXX Pro's - the pain went away. My PPF wrist guard is much smaller and more flexible. No problems at all.

The other thing I did not like about the X88 was that it did not have a full MSH2 palm. Just the gussets and overlay were MSH2.

Otherwise a good glove.

i've had the x88s for over a year and love them. these gloves are from before vaughan bought eagle. neve had a problem with them. when i got these gloves i was looking for a replacement for my x51s and these were the closest i could find. the fit is slighly tighter than my 5000s but i still perfer the x88s over my 5000s. one of the best if not the best glove i have ever owned.

for the poster who asked about the x72. the ones i saw in the flint store had mesh gussets and full msh2 palms.

Yes, they are indeed post-Vaughn... Some people may be mistaken because several press-shoots shows the 'Made-in-Canada' tag on the outside, but that A.) does not always mean pre-Vauhn and B.) I have yet to see a real X88 without the tag on the inside...

Still a very high quality glove though.
