Ducksgo 0 Report post Posted May 5, 2010 Let me first start by saying I'm right handed. And I seem to be rolling both wrists when I stick handle, I don't have any issues stick handling the puck through cones etc. My question is people are saying use your top hand to twist the stick and the lower hand to guide the stick. Well what is so bad if I use both hands to twist as well as guide? is this such a problem? What is the consequences of me continuing to play this way? if there are any
Muzza_77 0 Report post Posted May 6, 2010 having a loose lower hand is better for a few reasons:- allows for 'softer' hands when stickhandling- allows for quicker stickhandling & better cupping of the puck- doesn't waste energy by gripping with the bottom hand
iceNsteel 0 Report post Posted May 6, 2010 If the bottom hand isn't loose you'd have to constantly adjust your grip to move the puck closer and further from your body. That would be a rather signficant disadvantage to my mind.

gxc999 7 Report post Posted May 6, 2010 I roll both wrists...It's next to impossible to do any advanced moves doing that. You'd have to put a lot more effort into it and your reaction time probable would be worse as well.
puckhoggy 0 Report post Posted May 6, 2010 i roll my wrists too, BOTH! im a neewwwwbbbbbb still lol. no wonder i can stick handle 4 sh!t. i didnt realize this could be contributing to that. someone mentioned on another forum, to practice stickhandling with a roll of toilet paper. take an empty roll of toilet paper, slide it down the butt end of the shaft and place your lower hand on it to practice guiding the puck, while the upper hand does the rotating
gxc999 7 Report post Posted May 6, 2010 Another thing I wanted to point out: the bottom hand does more stabilizing on the forehand when stick handling than the backhand.

jjmills22 0 Report post Posted May 6, 2010 This guy rolls both his wrists and he seems to have some pretty good hands... ehhh.... they're okayI've been taught to roll both, but keep the bottom one more lose than the top- more so the stick can slide during toe- drags, shots, passes etc. etc. If the bottom hand's too tight, your blade will not be able to cup the puck, as was said above. I guess these Russians grew up without the USA Hockey videos. Too bad, eh. :P

regularjoe 1 Report post Posted May 17, 2010 As pointed out earlier, I think that "rolling the bottom wrist" versus "keeping the bottom hand loose" are actually two different things.I can see how you can do the former and still be a decent to good stickhandler but I don't see how you can not do the latter and still be a good stickhandler. Most of the best danglers I've seen just roll the top wrist but there's always the exceptions here and there. Ducksgo 0 Report post Posted May 17, 2010 Well I notice my stickhandling is ALOT better if I roll my top wrist and semi roll the bottom while controlling the stick in motion with my bottom wrist as well. Would people make fun of me on the ice cause I do it this way?

Would people make fun of me on the ice cause I do it this way?As long as you're getting the job done, I doubt you'll get much flack. Besides, if they give you any grief, just turn them inside-out and shut them right up :)

Would people make fun of me on the ice cause I do it this way? That sounds about right. The bottom hand is there to assist in stick handling, the top hand does most, not all, of the work.
