Bauer skates: what does the warranty cover?

Recommended Posts

Ok - my TOs are barely broken in, but despite me taking care of them & not beating them up they're showing signs of what appears to be premature design/build related breakdowns, which is alarming considering that it's a top of the line skate.

I didn't have any of these issues in 2 years using same pair of One95, so I'm wondering if it's a warranty issue that should be covered under 90 days?

so the 2 issues are:

1) there's a spot where the liner is already worn down to a hole (see the pic below). Apparently it's from the top part of the reflex tongue rubbing against the liner so isn't it a design issue?

2) outsole is already separating on the outside near the toe cap (it's not a board rush or anything like that - both skates have the same issue).

This doesn't look like normal 'wear & tear' to me, so any feedback from the gurus would be much appreciated before I go to LHS where I got the skates.

Thanks!

The boot wearing just looks like wear and tear to me, but the outsole separating definitely looks like an issue. Maybe check with the LHS where you bought them?

It wouldn't hurt to give Bauer a call and ask them about it. I know if I spent $800 on skates, I wouldn't be too happy about it. Its not a big deal now, but in 6 months that could be a big hole.

The outsole on my Total Ones are starting to separate too so it's not just your pair. I've barely broken in my skates yet and I take good care of my gear as well.

But yeah, a top of the line Bauer skate with major defects!?!!?!?!? That's a first!

Fwiw, my liner also has worn through in one spot like that, at about the same age. The hole is considerably bigger on mine though, and located on the inner side of the left boot. Doesn't seem like a warranty issue to me really, but I will admit a slight bit of disappointment. Otherwise, mine are holding up fine though, no problems with the outsoles.

It's fine. Just epoxy it up.

You shouldn't have to do that for skates that are only a couple months old, assuming they haven't been abused.

I've yet to get a new pair of skates that don't look like that at some point of the outsole.

Not sure about you, but as I said my One95 served me well for 2 years with no issues like this - in this case the skate is just 2 months in!

but quite frankly the outsole is not the biggest concern, the hole in the liner is - that's most certainly looks like a design issue since the top part of the tongue is quite hard, and will obviously rub against that part of the skate so it should have been reinforced with plastic/leather or something... Like others said how bad is this hole going to be in 2 years then?! :(

Mine have been fine since skating with them starting the beginning of December. No wear issues on the interior and the sole is perfect from front to back. That is 7 + months so far with no problems.

Any chance yours are slightly different than the production ones the rest of us got in April or whenever it was?

Rachel, I doubt there is anything different from my skates to those shipped in April. Over the last month the skates have been taking more abuse from sweat issues of skating in the warmer months. My socks turn into sponges from sweat during July/August games. The interior liner remains strong.

It'll wear out, and that'll be it. It won't eat your whole skate away.

well - just one more game & the situation is progressively getting worse. The liner wore quite thin in the area where rubbing occurs & so 2 more holes just ripped (same skate, just left-below the top eyelet). I even loosened up the top 2 eyelets quite a bit to allow more space but still it didn't help:

It feels like it'll continue ripping in that area on both sides of the skate which quite frankly sucks and I never had to deal with this in my previous skates (One95 & XXXX) that weren't even this expensive!

I'll take it to the LHS tomorrow & see what they say. Maybe they can send them to Bauer for inspection or something? Not sure how long it takes thought?

That wear area is not exclusive to your Bauer's. I have had the same wear pattern occur with my CCM U-Pro's and Easton S17's. My One 95's have clarino liners and didn't wear quite the same as the other skates mentioned.

@SolarWind, I think you should take the skates back to your lhs, maybe you have bad luck with your pair but the fact remains that something like this is unacceptable for a 800$ price tag skate, actually for any skate after only 2 months of use, no matter how hard. Don't suck it up, don't put epoxy on the outsole, just take them back and demand either a new pair or your money back. I'm sorry to see something like this happen to a company like Bauer, I would expect something like this from Easton or CCM, not Bauer

Why would you be suprised? This is nothing new for Bauer.

In all fairness it wasn't my experience thus far and so bashing Bauer wasn't the point of this thread. The only reason I posted it was to get opinion from the experts on this board and understand if others experienced something similar & what did they do about it.

When S15 self apart on me I did sort of give up on Easton (1500C was a good skate for me, but S15 was a very bad experience), but XXXX were tanks, so as One95 - both were top of the line models as well, and had pretty good durability.

This is what I personally didn't hesitate one bit to get TOs, and this is precisely why I'm disappointed right now since it was hard to predict that there'd be issues like that - the skate appears to be well built.

the matter is with Bauer now - my LHS did find the wear surprising, but excessive none the less and contacted the local rep for options so it's their move now. I'll keep you posted.
