Inception

Just got back from watching this.

Wow what a film, have not enjoyed a flick like this in a long long time.

Definitely will require a re-watch I think, but it will be a conversation topic for sure.

Absolutely amazing. We should start a topic for those who have seen it or mention spoilers, because I would love to discuss this movie with everyone!

Great movie, tho I shouldn't have had its first viewing in IMAX. Spoiler tags would definitely be a plus here.

edit for major spoilers

So if it was all a dream, (and i hate that 'twist' ending in movies but it didn't bother me in this for some reason, it was clever the first time it was used...the next time not so much)and we see that in the end with the continually spinning top... or i suppose we are left guessing...But judging from the fact that they never explicitly show Saito and Cobb dying to get out of limbo...does this mean that when Cobb's wife killed herself by jumping out the window...that she was in fact the one escaping back to reality?

Ahh, well there they are. I'm blind.

I'm thinking the whole thing was a dream for Cobb. His totem was his wife's totem so how could he be so sure of its weight if you were to never let someone else hold your totem? Sure, he could have just taken it to her after she died but that's wrapped up too nicely for Nolan.

My thoughts...

I do not think that was her totem. Remember Leo tells Ellen Page that Mal had hidden her totem to forget about it and then he went into her mind and replaced the totem with his totem. At least that was how I took it. I think that when you see the top wobble at the end it is actually the disturbance caused when Cobb realizes he is still in a dream. I also believe it only wobbles because he quickly accepts it. They were dressed exactly the same as in his memory. Besides think about it, Leo is not really a good guy. He mind fucked his wife and she killed herself, he also steals peoples ideas for a living. He kind of deserves to be trapped there forever!

I don't think he's a bad guy as much as he is a good guy. Does he steal ideas? Sure, but it's not the worst thing in the world. As for the inception he performed on his wife, it was because she thought that their limbo was their real world and she was abandoning their kids. It's all ambiguous and can be taken however the view wants.

That is the best part about it. What does it mean to you. Christopher Nolan performed Inception on everyone who will see this movie!

Great movie. Did anyone else think Leo's character was similiar to his role in Shutter Island?

In that he's got wife issues, yes, but he's had that in his last few movies. At least in this one he was self-aware of his reality not being real.

That said,

I still don't think he got out after a second viewing. The top still seems like it's about to wobble but that's really the only strong argument for the "he got out" part of me.

And for Skyscrape:

he wasn't putting a totem in the safe for Mal - he was taking it out.

gotcha!!!!

I thought about one other thing, the top wobbled when he realized he was in a dream. Just like the explosions in ellen page's first dream and in cillian murphy's dream there was a disturbance when he realized he was dreaming.

I'd read someone talking about that and that makes sense, too. It could be his realisation of a dream and him just not caring anymore or just showing that it was about to topple and prove it all real. The whole damn thing's just perfectly crafted for the viewer to come up with their own conclusion. In a less hacky way than the Sopranos ended, at least.

He was using her totem (the top) all along after he took it out of the safe in Limbo, wasn't he?

Yup, it was Mal's and he was using it. It goes against the bit about never letting anyone touch your totem, but then again Cobb always went against what was instructed.

Inception is planting an idea. Well, Mr. Nolan planted a whopper in the minds of everyone who has seen his movie!

I am going to see it a second time on friday and I am sure I will have more to add after the second viewing.

That's what convinced me at the end that he wasn't in reality all along, the fact he was using someone else's totem and expecting it to work. All I have to say is he better be a damn good father to those kids regardless of what reality he ended up in.

Saw it a second time yesterday. Cleared some things up but left me with some other questions:

IF, hypothetically if, the top did not stop spinning in the final scene, that means Cobb was still in fact dreaming and what he had perceived as reality the whole movie was not at all. This means that when Mal jumped from the window ledge, she was in fact returning to reality, or at least another higher dream level and not committing suicide as Cobb believed. This brings up two questions:

1. If she is back in reality, or at least a higher dream level, why doesn't she simply give him the "kick" and wake him up so that they can be reunited and "grow old together"?

2. Cobb and Mal spent decades living together in Limbo. They were shown to be ~90 years old. Cobb is roughly 35 in what he perceives as reality, that must mean that in the next level up, where Mal is "waiting" for him, they must be children to go along with the age discrepancy.

Or maybe I'm just thinking too much... But hey, isn't that the point of the movie?

1) It's possible in their reality she did actually die and Cobb's just trying to get back to the kids because he's set in his mind the fact Mal's dead. She wouldn't be there to give him a kick.

2) In their limbo they grew old but remember time goes by a lot faster the deeper into dreams you go. If we go with Cobb actually making it out, Saito became an old man in limbo and in reality was just completing the flight.
