Bauer Vapor 10 skates (from late 90's early 2000)

Recommended Posts

So last week i posted here about Bauer Classic gold skates. I was thinking of getting a used pair but that fell through.

So now i have come across an older used pair of Bauer Vapor 10's

the kind Afinogenov wore for so many years.

Anyway I was wondering what you guys rember about this skate? any majoir issues and quality issues? How did this skate compare to the Mega Air 90's?? I though i had heard this skate replaced the Air 90?

Also this pair i found comes in an EE width, now for the last almost 15 years i have been skating on the Mega Air 90's in an E with,, so will this be a little too wide or was this about the time Bauer stoped make E width and everything became EE??

Can i bake these skates?

Ok any help or info on these oldies let me know

thanks

I think the perforated steel on the stock holder/skate was not very durable.

This was the real break thru skate for the whole industry.

The Vapor 8 was the original skate that broke the mold for new design and styling in skates. The Vapor 10 was the second generation of the Vapor skate line.

The Vapor 10 was a fantastic skate - it really improved on the Vapor 8, which was a huge innovation, particularly in the durability department. It was narrow, but personally I loved the fit as it fit my foot very well. The only issue was that they were cut extremely high, but you can solve that quickly by leaving the last eyelet undone. Frankly if I could find a new pair in my size I would wear them again in a heartbeat.

Here is the original Vapor 8 as it appeared in the 1998 Bauer catalog. I had a pair of these in Pro Stock. They were incredibly stiff. The Vapor 8 was introduced before the bake oven. The only way to break in the skates was wearing them. The original Dura TECH MESH fibers in the upper also turned the boot white after sweat got into it. This issue was corrected in the Vapor 10.

This is the Vapor 10 introduced in the Bauer 2000 catalog. The platinum trim on the facing and tendon guard was another improvement over the design used on the Vapor 8. The guts of the skate remained the same from the Vapor 8. This boot is now designed to be used with the Bauer bake oven. The Bauer bake oven was first introduced with the 1999 Supreme 7000.

This was the real break thru skate for the whole industry. In my opinion this was the last time I saw a company trying to design the best possible skate first rather then focusing on process and production then design. If you look at progression of Bauer Vapor line, a lot of the materials which are used on that skate are still used today (Surlyn, Megabix, HD Foam), especially pro stock models which don't fall into the stock 75% range.

The flaws of V10 model compared to current Vapor line would be

1) Outsole was too stiff, they actually reduced the stiffness slightly and shaved the weight as well.

2) Narrow toe box with cloth cover and fully rigid tips,

3) With the V40 and up, Bauer improved the design with wider orgalloy toe cap. But they key is the tips of the new toe cap which are stitched to the tongue and the side walls in front. these are made more flexible, so you get a better forward flex and quicker steps.

The prons of the V10 model compared to today's Vapor line is, it had a better forward flex, top edges did not dig into your foot as much, better pitched boot - top portion with reh tendon guard was angled back more like figure skate angle. Grip liner.

This model had very narrow heel and I would say overall shape was made for narrow foot even EE was not that wide.

As far as breakage goes this model would last you more then Vapor 20 and Vapor 30 lasted.

I think this was the only skate which held its ground for a long time in the NHL, and guys didn't want to change into a newer models.

Cheers.

Wow dude! Have any opinions on the 8090's?

I had a pair of used 10s last fall. I only skated in them a few times, they were way to narrow for me in the D width. I fit the older Supreme line (6000 & 8090) in the D width. I searched them out on ebay because I love how those skates look. But as we know, buying for looks is a bad idea! The fit was just no good for my moderately wide and flat foot.

The pair I got was used but not abused and the boot was still extremely stiff. The only real wear was on the liner where the tongue rubs by the top eyelets and on the silver area down near the toe box. I guess after the years, the tongue itself was also a bit flimsy.

Great skate that seems pretty damn durable, IF it fits your foot.

Thank you guys for all the input on thee Skates.

I saw a really nice pair at my local play it agian but had little time to try them on or really look at them. I called and asked them to hold them for me till this weekend when i can go back to take a Closer look.

But i had 2 pairs of the Mega Air 90's which i LOVED LOVED.The mega skates were so comfy and fit so well right out of the box. I had like no break in time at all with my mega's. anyway i was wondering can anyone tell me how these compared to the mega air 90's in fit and preformance?

I can say that as much as I loved the Vapor 10's, the Mega Air 90's are far an away my all time favorite skate. Obviously everyone has different preferences and opinions, so take my thoughts for what they're worth, but I loved both pairs of skates.

Rob Blake was one of the last hold outs to wear these skates before moving on to the newer Vapors. It was known that he would put them on new and then get them wet in the hot tub, a pre bake method....

if you wear a 6D I can hook you up. I've got a pair that I've never worn simply because I'm still skating in Vapor 8's. LOVE those things!

There is a guy on eBay selling a pair of Vapor 10. He claims that they were only used 7 - 10 times. But if you look at the steel, you can see that those things have been sharpened many times. I asked him how many times they were sharpened. He said the skates had been sharpened approximately 4 - 6 times.

Skated in 7-10 times but sharpened 4-6 times. Right.

Thanks, but no luck, I need a 9.5D.

Maybe you can get lucky at a PIAS (if you have one) or a store closing down. I picked up two pairs before I moved up here and still have one of them in pristine condition, being taken out only to have ICMs mounted.
