CCM U+ 2011 Skate Durability

Recommended Posts

This is the CCM U+ 12 boot that came in last week for a sharpening. You can see the puncture in the boot. The second picture shows the exposed U+ foam. Anything can happen to any skate any brand at any time. There is no most durable skate on the market, no matter how much you pay for it.

Ouch! I guess golf balls hold up so well because there's not foam right behind the surlyn, eh?

Some heavy dude must have stepped on the outside of his skate and his blade just dug through the surlyn into the foam. I have the CL's and they are absolute tanks but I am sure that if someone stepped on them at the right angle the same thing could happen. That would suck though because I paid $550 for the skates and I dont think anything like that would ever be covered by a warranty.

Bottom line, no skates are indestructable but I would not avoid the new CCM U+12 or CL just because of this picture by any means.

GAH!! I just bought the 2011 U+12's a month and a half ago and I'm getting all paranoid now. This is, assumedly, a freak occurence but...what if?

Don't get paranoid, skates get cut, regardless of brand. Perhaps we should start posting pics of the "OTHER" brands just to show how they cut and tear and cave in from shots as well. That should put your mind at ease. You made a great decision, the U12 has turned out to be an awesome skate with very little issues.

Yeah, I love 'em so far and I know it's just a change thing and it could happen to any skate. I guess it's just more of a "Holy Shit, I just spent $300 on these skates and they can get absolutely ruined in an instant." I guess the real question is this: how cooked are those skates? Is that just a little bit of fiberglass or something and they're good as new?

Surlyn, the same stuff used on golf balls. I am starting to question the wisdom of it's use in skates. I think we have all seen split golf balls, now what factors do freezing conditions have on it. Maybe it's not a concern, I don't know.

I like it better than the other materials used. And yea golf balls crack but when you hit a ball with a golf club going over 100mph repeatedly and that balls crashed into concrete, rocks, and trees, its bound to break.

Also, keep in mind this skate issue is on one skate, I have yet ot hear of any other problem with them, and I own a pair too and it would take a LOT of force to do that IMO

I sincerely hope you are right. I really like the direction Reebok/CCM is taking, I am just concerned. If you google Surlyn, you can find instances where brand new golf balls are splitting open after the 4th hole, and one of the items I saw questioned is were the balls ever frozen. It may or may not be common, just as the skate issues may or may not arise. I hope these are isolated incidents, only time will tell.

I think people are missing the entire point of this thread. DarkStar was simply showing that all skates are subject to structural defects, and that the people crying wolf on the skates having crappy durability are uncalled for at this point in their life spans.

Have had the CL's for awhile now and have taken a few shots off the boot. No problems structurally or cosmetically. Barely even felt the shots. As mentioned this was probably a fluke and would only be concerned if this started to become a frequent problem among users.

I had a ONE90 in the shop a few years ago that also was punctured in the boot.

JR, didn't you get the message about oversized pics? JK.............

I know its a random occurance, but I just had a 12 into the shop that looks identical to yours ds. But I've had just as many issues similar with 60s random rbk, easton etc

Exactly. I think we all should post a pic of every durability problem with every model skate regardless of brand. Oh wait, I don't think this site has the bandwidth to handle that.

I've had my U+ Pro Reloadeds for ~8 months and people still ask me if they're new because the surlyn is still mostly shiny.

And I skate 10+ hours a week, though, as most of my ice time is reffing, I don't get the nicks and cuts I would if I was playing 10 hours a week.

FYI - The image of the golf ball here is a Titleist Pro V1x. The cover material on this ball is urethane elastomer, but you are right in stating that surlyn covers on golf balls can crack / fail.
