Easton S17 Skate durability

Recommended Posts

Its time to upgrade my skates, im using Bauer Vapor XX and they are past their best.

I need a skate with a small ankle pocket and great shot blocking protection and the S17 skates seems to provide both, plus there are some great deals on the S17 Stealth skates (silver)

I know that Easton skates have had there problems in the past with rivet problems, toe caps wearing out and durability issues, so i'm wondering how the S17's are for durability and reliability.

I have been skating over a year on a pair of Eastons S17. I am a reasonably heavy guy, at 6 feet, almost 200lbs. The skate does show signs of wear, but definitely nothing strange, or that had compromised the safety/ durability of the skate. They are also incredibly light which is a fantastic feature. On the other hand, you mention them being very protective against blocked shots, but I am not sure I fully agree with this statement. I play defense and I ended up stocking a pair of skate fenders because I was being hit badly on my skates every now and again. Hope this helps. Overall I love my skates, so much I am considering buying another pair for when this breaks.

IMO I think they have really good protection. In my 9ks if you took a normal wrister to the heel it would hurt for a minute. I haven't felt anything in my Eastons for more than the occasional second or two.

(Ive had 1200s,1300cs,S12s,S17s)

ive had my s17s for over a year and they still look pretty good. not new exactly, but close.

i skate 2-3 times a week and am around 200lbs.

it must be said though, its depends on how you take care of your skates more than the skate itself.

i ran into someone who had his s17s for the same amount of time ive had mine, but his looked like hell.

i've had mine 2 years this summer and couldn't be happier, i played junior both years so they got plenty of ice time. my only complaint was the holder and the rivets

yeah ..the rivets don't last long ...no matter how carefully you dry them out ....plus the stitching is not too strong , either ....but I did adress that with some RV sealant ......and have no problems otherwise

based on the criteria you mentioned it does sound like a good skate for you. We've had couple issues with them, slightly more warranty issues then bauer, but its been on par with warranty issues with ccm and reebok. Rivets will pop out eventually, however, for a quick and cheap fix I would not let that deter you from getting them. Holds up a lot better than the se16 and s15. And with the new EQ50 looking as if it will hold up better than the s17, it seems to me that easton is getting up to par in terms of durability.

what kind of warranty issues did you have actually ??? ..... front part with the first eyelet getting separated from the skate ?? tendon guard breaking ??

cant comment on the 9ks, but my previous skates (Kor shift 2s) were a tank!

I've actually had some minor problems with the stitching of some parts too, and was planning on taking on your advice.

Can you post a link to a RV sealant? I dont live in the States and Im not sure if RV is the brand, or an abbreviation, but Im sure theres an equivalent product here. Cheers!

Just for interest sake. I've been in Easton composite skates since they first came out with the 1300C's and I can't be happier with them. I recently sold my 1300's to Play It Again Sports and they where still in very good shape and usable after almost five years. I have the Synergy 16's and the Stealth 12's and both have held up extremely well playing three times a week all season. I wear the Synergy's a majority of the time and the Stealths when just goofing about. I got great deals on both pairs on clearance at less than half their original prices and they perform just as well as anything I ever tried on the market. In my opinion Easton makes really decent skates that work for me and cost me hundreds of dollars less than other brands. I only wish however they where North American made, to keep the jobs here and not overseas. That will be the determining factor for my next pair of skates and it's looking more and more like top of the line Reeboks. (When they go on sale of course.)

Easton logo near toe would collapse in if hit just right.

oh yes ...those came off on all of my s17 without even being hit ...but to me that's just cosmetical ......if you bother , use sika 221 to glue it back in

I feel like I just dodged a bullet: I tried on a pair and was all set to buy (they were 50% off!). The salesman put the skates in the oven for 5 minutes and handed them to me. I put the first one on and started cinching up the laces and tore the boot at the first eyelet!

haha it sounds like you DID dodge one. The salesperson was supposed to lace those on, not you. Might've happened regardless but you never know

$400 for $800 skates isn't such a good deal when they fall apart in no time at all!

The store is bringing in another pair for me, but I think I am going to call them and tell them not to bother.

I've had good luck with my S17's, but I'd like to know if anybody else has experienced the same thing with their skates as I recently have. I don't know if it's the construction of the boot or the materials, but when I'm all laced up and flex forward, the skates make some creaking sounds. Anybody else get these strange sounds from their skates?

Yeah, I don't worry about it. It's been going on for a few months and nothing has happened (if that's comforting :P)

More than likely it was your fault. You can tear a boot easily that just came out of the skate oven. The salesperson should have given you instructions to be careful and how to lace up the boot.

^If $800 skates need special instructions so as not to be destroyed during the fitting process, and those instructions aren't given, I don't see how that's the fault of the guy trying them on. In any case, that part of the boot seems very weak.

Not instructions specific to the boot. It's common practice when putting on newly heated skates to not yank or pull on the laces. A firm tug will suffice. Pulling too hard on hot skates will yank an eyelet on almost every skate. At least this has been my experience; been on both ends.

^^I didn't know that.

But I want to clarify that it wasn't an eyelet popping out, nor was it the boot tearing around the eyelet. Instead, it was the boot tearing where it met the toe cap. (That's why I quoted x-track's post in my first post.)

I have Se16's and I can say that my right skate creaks because the material near the to cap is separating from the boot be sure to check yours before you skate on them again.
