hampshirepuck 2 Report post Posted May 31, 2011 I don't understand why people do that. Just for there own ego boost or what? We have two guys on the other team who hotdog it non stop and try to push around my 110 lb female teammate. I put an end to that because she is just a beginner and they feel all big and bad. Go play in the novice and leave us newbies alone while we enjoy the game and try to improve. Freaking Idiots.Yeah at the pick- up in dover there is sometimes few hot-shots out there as well one was an ex-junior player.... one kid who was just like everybody else picked a fight with middle aged guy who like everyone else out there was just trying to have a good time. Usually for the most part though the rink guys usually do a good job regulating and if someone is asking like an idiot week after they will take their money. snuzzo24 0 Report post Posted May 31, 2011 I am going to join a 12 week 2 hour beginner clinic myself. Played a game of pickup for the first time last night and I just couldn't keep up. I did get set up a few times by some of the better players so that was nice but otherwise I looked pretty bad. Looking forward to this clinic.

Stoop 1 Report post Posted June 1, 2011 I don't understand why people do that. Just for there own ego boost or what? I think guys who play much lower than their real level often claim/intend to take it easy and soft. But then the competitive juices start flowing, and sometimes that plan gets thrown out the window. Obviously it can be extremely helpful to play in mixed groups sometimes. But I absolutely love those times when there are no ringers on the ice.
Vulcan7905 88 Report post Posted June 1, 2011 I hear ya Stoop but when he is doing backwards cross overs and out skating our director (who plays to sometimes slow him down) He needs to play a league up. We are there to learn and enjoy, not get skated over.
IPv6Freely 2093 Report post Posted June 3, 2011 I don't mind at all if there are a couple better players out there, because they usually will pass you the puck and try to help you learn something. The problem are the superstars who go on end to end rushes and act like they just won the cup on their backhand top cheddar.

IPv6Freely 2093 Report post Posted June 7, 2011 We had a guy last night on the other team get a game misconduct. We were beating up on them pretty badly (6-1 at this point) and they were clearly getting frustrated.Anyway, I looked up the suspensions list - and this guy has already been suspended once this season (we're only 3 games in so far). I looked up our rules and saw this:Game misconduct: suspended from league play for 1 week. Upon receiving a third game misconduct, the player will be suspended from league play for 1 month. Any further charges of misconduct may cause suspension from league play for the remainder of the season.I'm kind of blown away. It takes FOUR misconducts/suspensions in a 13 game season to be booted out of the league? That seems WAY too lenient. This is division 5 adult beer league... most of us are here to have fun and improve our skills. I might have a chat with the league director. Does that seem too lenient to you guys also? wrangler 157 Report post Posted June 7, 2011 The language of the rule doesn't specifically address the 4th and subsequent misconducts. While the 3d requires a month off, any further misconducts will each require one week off. Suspension for the season is discretionary, and a strict reading of the rule doesn't provide for a lesser penalty -- it allows one week or the rest of the season. Even so, it wouldn't surprise me if they apply the rule by giving a month off for the 4th misconduct. In that case, that should cover the rest of the season. By the time someone has four game misconducts, he's been thrown out of four games, and already been suspended for 6 other games, while he's waiting to see if he's done for the year. That leaves 3 games to play, and a month off would cover those. The rules may also have a separate shotgun provision that allows suspensions for special cases that are considered chronic problems. As to my personal opinion of what the rule should be? If this is a lower level, non-contact rec league, I'd say the 2nd misconduct and you're gone. I have no idea what goes on in a full-check league, but can't see how it has any place in this type of play. If you were playing in a rec baseball, or soccer, or basketball league, I think most would kick you out after two intentional aggressions. Seems right to me. snuzzo24 0 Report post Posted June 13, 2011 Just finished up my 2nd session of the Adult beginner clinic tonight. We play on an international size rink so its real tiring when we play pickup for the last hour. Its a lot of fun and there are not too many ringers but there are 2 or 3. Generally everyone is either a beginner or has been away from the game for a while. The instructor plays with us and he just hangs back and will feed you passes all night which is cool. Overall its been a fun but tiring experience and I think its only gonna get better as everyone progresses.

Vulcan7905 88 Report post Posted June 17, 2011 Got my first penalty tonight for interference. Was at center ice and saw the puck go by me. Tried to poke check but instead the guy going for the puck ran into me and man he fell hard. Had a chat with him afterwards a long with the ref and told him how sorry I was. He understood as did the ref since I'm a big guy. Ref said if I fell with him wouldn't have been a problem since we would have just gotten tangled up. Guy said "Next time I know not to do that. Felt like a Mac truck knocked me on my ass." Felt bad about it but at the same time you just have to learn really. My tem even scored on a short handed goal. Won 5 - 3. Our team has really picked up the pace really along with my self as well.
GoBucky 0 Report post Posted June 17, 2011 What the average level of skating in this league? Im planning on hitting up some open hockey at the local rinks and Im curious as to what I can expect. Im a good skater (can skate foreward, backwards, balance on either foot and stop quickly) but definetly not a great skater.
Vulcan7905 88 Report post Posted June 18, 2011 Well, since it's the beginner league thread, your basic skating honestly. Two people in my leaague can do backwards crossovers but that's it really. Once I get my skates it will be my main mission honestly. If you're going to an open pick up and not begineer it might be really fast paced.
Vulcan7905 88 Report post Posted June 24, 2011 Good game tonight. Lost 6-5 when they scored with 40 seconds left. How ever, Russell strikes again. Fifteen seconds into the game I put a wrister on the goalies pads and she rebounded it off her pads, it hits the post and went right in. What a way to start a game! Telling ya, people don't expect that from a big winger like me! I love it!
Vulcan7905 88 Report post Posted July 12, 2011 Finished my last game Thursday since I had to go on Vacation for the last two games. We lost our game but it was a hard fought game going 2-2 into Overtime and then a shoot out. I went out to take a shot and hit the goalie right in the chest (doh!) I am looking forward to starting Beginner Pick Up games on Wednesday nights till the league starts back up again.
IPv6Freely 2093 Report post Posted July 25, 2011 So I have a question for you guys...I've only been playing hockey for 8 months, but I've been following it since I was about 6. My dad played well into his 60s. I like to think I'm pretty well versed in the duties of an official. However, I was blown away by actually being insulted by a ref in our game last night. It ended up with me having a 10 min misconduct and I would gladly do it again. He said what he said, and it wasn't especially harsh, except that it was in an adult beginner league and completely uncalled for. I was just kind of shocked when he said it, and I immediately turned around to confront him. I'm not sure if I should just let it slide, or if I should email the league director about it. The league director should be siding with the on-ice officials, but if there is enough of a "case" documented against this official then something can be done. If this is an official that is just starting to slide over to the "dark side", then your reporting of the incident and, hopefully, the league director's asking the official about his side of the story might be enough to pull this official back to the "good side".Just speculating, but maybe the official was frustrated because he felt that the level of play was too low for his abilities and the play was too difficult and helter-skelter to read. Who knows. The game started to get really REALLY chippy by the end. Like I said, he didn't say anything too harsh, but at the time (after going awkwardly into the boards thanks to a light poke in the skate by the defender) I wasn't exactly happy about being insulted by this guy.
