New Type of Protection

Recommended Posts

Sorry if this has been covered before but a recent release just announced that Michael Vick will be a spokesman for this product for its football applications. Check out the "Hockey Challenge" vid on the link.

Apparently some of the Bruins are using this stuff during the playoffs.

Interesting, not cheap though, $80 for an 18" x 18" sheet! Hard to see this being used in retail pads unless the price comes way, way down.

I think the idea is that you cut and stick pieces where you want it on your existing pads. Could open up new possibilities around low-profile, mobile shoulder pads for beer leaguers.

Def could be used as part of a base layer. Placed in 'soft areas' or even replacing the pads in pants and shoulders. I believe there was something similar that was tossed around a year or two ago. It was a very flexible material but when force was applied to it, the 'atoms' or whatever they said would re-align to form a hard carbon-fiber like shell.

I saw a relatively similar material (conceptually at least) on modern marvels a while back, but it was armor for the military. It was a gel-like material that turns into a ceramic-like material at impact. I think they called it liquid armor. The flak jacket was only 20 lbs, versus 70 plus lbs for the standard armor.

Looks like they spun it off into sports padding, good stuff.

They're not too far down the road from me, I'll have to see if I can work out a chance to pop in and see them

if its that good - i would hope they would find a way to incorporate it into skates without losing their stiffness. maybe the days of breaking bones in your feet would be over? although the skate fenders seem to do a pretty good job of that too.

that goalie in that video is nuts. what if the guy missed the mark, he had no back-up plan, just a tee shirt...

I was thinking that as well. If you could just attach a piece to the side of the boot you would be good to go.

Was that the Zoombang stuff?

I can't stop thinking about the possibilities. I'm gonna wrap my kids in this stuff and cover my car with it. :)

I wonder if you could wrap that the bottom of shaft for slash protection?

In addition to the balance problems it would cause, I don't think you would want someone to slash you when you're stick was loaded for a shot.

Yehah true I was just thinking out loud haha..... But do you think that it would be as effective if it was cut down into smaller pieces?

..

I wonder if this will be incorporated into hockey helmets soon - i don't know if it would help to protect against concussion all that much, but it couldn't hurt. They do have a football helmet out incorporating this stuff: http://www.riddell.com/shop-riddell/helmet/revolution-iq-helmet/

They do? All I see is recycled Easton buzzwords and logos. LOL

I would speculate that most concussions in hockey do not result from being struck by puck or stick. Instead they result from striking the ice or boards. When striking the ice or boards the concussion results from the sudden stop. The inertia of the brain then continues and it strikes the skull, then rebounds and stikes the opposite side of the skull resulting in a contracoup injury. Only by slowing the deceleration of the skull can we reduce this type of injury.

While this material seems very good at reducing impact from pucks and sticks it is unlikely to reduce concussion from sudden deceleration.

As part of equipment that protects us from pucks and sticks this might be really good stuff.

This is something I can see being incorporated in shin guards or shoulder pads in the future, maybe glove inserts as well? I guess it depends on the weight and the flexibility of the material

Kind of reminds me of this stuff: http://www.thinkgeek.com/geektoys/cubegoodies/5ac8/

It's this silly putty type stuff that, when force is applied, instantly solidifies. I would goof around with it just like silly putty, but then I would hit it with a hammer and it would shatter like glass or something. Fun stuff. I figure that type of material would work as a sort of inner layer in pads. Like regular plastic|special goop|padding for comfort.

That Unequal stuff looks interesting. I had ZoomBang custom sew in their material into the back of my jock shorts to give me extra protection where my girdle leaves me vulnerable. The ZoomBang is flexible, but solidifies when it's impacted. It works great!

I could see using this Unequal material to beef up my girdle in the soft single density foam areas. Oh the possibilities...
