FlyingDutchman 3 Report post Posted June 17, 2011 I tried a set of wax laces, and I won't go back to regular ones. Why? When I used typical laces, I had to tighten them up more uniformly, meaning my lower laces were too tight. These wax ones allow me to have looser laces across the top of my lower foot, and tighter up above where the ankle is. This is extremely comfortable. It was always a problem one way or the other. If I tight my regular laces loose enough for my lower laces to be comfy, it was hard to get my ankle tight enough. If my ankles were tight enough, my lower foot ached from being bound to tight. If this is an issue for anyone, they may wanna give wax laces a go.
AIREAYE 248 Report post Posted June 17, 2011 That's the purpose of waxed: to provide extra friction so that they don't loosen. I won't ever go back to regular again either.
tlarks21 0 Report post Posted June 17, 2011 Went back to regular recently becuase the usual pro shop was out of waxed. Big mistake after having waxed for a while now. As the game goes on I can feel my ankles snapping when I cut. Brutal, Viva Waxed!
kenneth 5 Report post Posted June 17, 2011 reg laces just destroy my hands as Ovi says "maybe he has sensitive skin?" lol
sticky667 0 Report post Posted June 17, 2011 if you need the lower part of the skate looser than the ankle, you need to widen the toebox.
toddmanley 0 Report post Posted June 17, 2011 I recently decided to experiment and go back to regular laces after using wax laces for the past year. Perhaps it's just me, but I found that last night my feet were much more comfortable after 2+ hours of hard skating than they used to be with wax laces. I will note that it did take me a bit longer while lacing up the skates to get the laces how I wanted them in terms of tightness; with the wax laces it was more of a "set it and forget it" mindset. I had to go back to the bench a couple of times during warm-ups to adjust my laces, but once adjusted, things felt good.I'm sure I'll go back to waxed laces as I'm always screwing around and changing my mind on the little stuff like this... duch 0 Report post Posted June 17, 2011 I stick with the laces that come with any new skates until they show wear. Once they start to fray I always replace them with wax laces. I find wax laces stay tight and don't wear out as fast a conventional non-waxed laces. I don't really have a lot of issues with conventional laces staying tight for me because I like the lower part of my foot, near the toe cap loose, anyways.( but I still do prefer the waxed ones)
Stoop 1 Report post Posted June 17, 2011 I'm the same as the OP. I don't want the bottom of the skate to be super tight, or else there is cramping, but I do like to tighten right around the ankle.
jimmy 194 Report post Posted June 17, 2011 Try the new Elite Oval laces, not wax but holds better than wax. Our customers are raving about them, something you wouldn't expect to hear about laces. They are that good.

zachary 2 Report post Posted June 17, 2011 I hate the Elite wax laces. My LHS has Bauer ones that I enjoy alot more. Don't ask why but I just do. As everyone else I'll never go back to regular laces. I just got new wheels and I had yet to change out the laces and I went to pickup and wow I hated it.
Sidorov96 0 Report post Posted June 18, 2011 I too love waxed laces. I usually use the laces that come with the skates until they start wearing out, then I always replace them with waxed laces.
johnnyvegas 0 Report post Posted June 18, 2011 Waxed laces are great. I've found that coupled with outside-to-inside lacing, they hold very well even while tightening up the skates.
SolarWind 23 Report post Posted June 18, 2011 That's the purpose of waxed: to provide extra friction so that they don't loosen. I won't ever go back to regular again either. I think it's definitely ONE of the purposes, with the other being they don't soak as much water during the game, and so don't stretch nearly as much. as a result waxed laces don't loosen up due to getting wet unlike regular ones. IPv6Freely 2096 Report post Posted June 18, 2011 Waxed laces work great... they're just a bitch to untie. Maybe I should just get a lace puller and try them again.
jimmy 194 Report post Posted June 18, 2011 The X-7's are not oval or waxed, just wider than normal. The ovals I have from Elite do not say waxed on the box like the link to the monkey ones, they feel "stiff", best way to describe them.

Jarick 5 Report post Posted June 20, 2011 Those oval laces look similar to Gorilla laces, maybe a bit wider, don't know if it's got the little edges that bite.Personally I get a new pair of Graf waxed at the start of the season and they work great for pretty much the whole year. A2rhino 63 Report post Posted June 21, 2011 Being that so many people use wax laces, why dont they come standard on skates? I put a pair of Elite in my One100 skates before I baked them and wow what way to get a tight fit. The wax warms up like the boot does and when you tighten it down it really wrenches down well. For those of you who may think the wax will wear off, it doesnt. I have been in these same laces since my purchase back in Aug./Sept.
interpathway 9 Report post Posted June 21, 2011 Wax laces leave paraffin residue all over the eyelets and side panels. I don't think they want that on "out-of-the-box" skates. Plus they're more expensive.

When you are making tens of thousands of pairs of skates, spending half as much on laces really adds up.
IPv6Freely 2096 Report post Posted June 22, 2011 I tried the Elite "pro" laces. I like them a LOT more than the normal ones, but I still think I want to try both oval laces and waxed one more time. Wife rags on me though "you're changing your laces AGAIN??" heh.
