Weighted Orange Pucks

Recommended Posts

There's surprisingly little discussion about this, so I'm starting a new thread.

I'm thinking about picking up a few of the weighted orange pucks to build some shooting strength. Good idea, bad idea? Mostly concerned with wrist/snap shots as my slapper seems fairly well dialed in.

Hate as in they were useless or it was just a really good workout?

Useless. In my opinion shooting them wears your shafts down. They are something like three or four times heavier than a puck, so it puts alot more stress into your sticks, everything from snap shots to wristers (GL to anyone ripping slappers, haha). But they are a doozy to dangle around the cones. Do it for thirty seconds and tell me your arms aren't tired, I'd be impressed.

Wouldn't use them for slappers, just wrist/snap shots. Maybe I'll just pick up one and see how it goes.

Also my shooting range stick WILL NOT DIE. It's an old 1st gen Reebok 7k Sickick cut with a Vapor XXXX blade. Had it for three years now and it's completely indestructible. Got a couple other shafts/blades that I certainly wouldn't mind breaking either :)

Hah I know this feeling! To keep myself from overspending I try not to own too many sticks at a time, but the downside is that when I have a stick I don't like I almost purposefully try to break it :)

I had a clinic with Tadd Tuomie, who sells the "Big Puck", a gigantic hockey puck (2" tall, 6" diameter, 2.75 pounds) that we played around with afterwards, passing it around. It was absolutely nuts how much of a core workout that was and how light it made the regular puck feel. I figured the orange pucks (10 oz to the standard 6 oz) might do something like that for shooting.

And yeah, I have my main stick, my backup, and then about five other sticks that aren't worth selling :P

They are made more for stickhandling, not shooting. They are great for building the large muscles that are used in stickhandling though.

I use one for stick handling and wrist shots. I'll take a stick I want to destroy and use the orange puck for slapshots. It is the best workout you'll ever get to make a puck feel like a feather and increase your hand speed once you go back to a regulation puck. Tremendous confidence booster for your stick handling skills.
