Cage Options

Recommended Posts

Hey Guys,

I just started playing this year, so my experience with equipment is pretty limited. I wore a Bauer hand-me-down helmet that I picked up from my fiance's brother for the summer beer league session here. It has a cage on it, but I'm not sure what model it is. Its use-able, but it is mis-shaped a bit. I picked up a used Easton S9 for 15 bucks and a prostock Missin VN Intake for 25 shipped, to see what helmet I like best. Neither came with a cage, though, so I'm looking at ordering one. Trying to keep it cheap here...~20 bucks. Is there a cage that is compatible with both the S9 and Intake? If so, what are my options? I know the 480 is a popular cage, but 1. can it be had cheap and 2. will it work with either OR both helmets?

Thanks!

$30 + shipping here for the FM480: http://www.icewarehouse.com/descpage.html?pcode=CFM48C

In most cases:

Small helmet = small cage

Medium helmet = medium cage

Large helmet = large cage

Yes, the FM480 will fit both of those helmets. If it pinches on the sides/temples a little, pull the bars out a little bit. It won't damage the cage, and relieves that pressure.

didnt think this was worthy of a new topic but as far as switching from a cage to a visor, i have the bauer 7500 and am looking to go to a cage. I have used a half sheild for 9 years now, so im wondering what adjustments to expect and if there is a cage thats better for someone whos used the visor and very used to it.

Hate to do it, i know i wont look as good or see as well but just tired of getting sticks up high in mens league

I got a Bauer 9900 and love it. Honestly, I don't even know I have a cage when I am playing. It's pricey $49 but i love it and have taken sticks and pucks to the face with no problems at all. I don't know if that helps but from a fellow newbie and beer leaguer, I love that cage. Going to get a new helmet as it is getting worn but plan on keeping the cage if possible.

As said, 9900 has good weight and visibility. I replaced mine with a chrome ccm480, and I'm liking it too. I've heard some good things about the reebok 11k cage too as well.

From my experience, I think the Easton bars on the cage are narrower. I've been using the Rbk 5k helmet/5k Cage, and then got a S19 Helmet with S13 Cage. The S13 Cage messed me up because there is less spacing in between each bars. I've used it that one time, and haven't used it since.

Narrower than the oval bars on the 9900?

I think he meant that the bars are spaced closer together, not that the bars themselves are actually narrower.

So found a full cage and tried it, the bars (optics) on it made me dizzy and just goofy vision in the game, anyone have any expereience with the Bauer 920 Combo or the Bauer Concept II. I enjoyed the full face protection but the lack of vision was brutal.

Any advice, (Pros/Cons) on either would be greatly appreciated

I hated full shields and half shield/cage combos. I can never get them to stay clear and fog-free, despite all the usual tricks (hand soap, dish soap, anti-fog spray). Going back to the cage took some getting used to, but I like a chrome or gunmetal cage much more than a shield. You just have to look past the bars.

Both are pretty well known to have issues with fogging, many people find the bottom bars on the 920 distracting. The most promising full shield IMHO looks to be the Boulder Hockey shield, haven't tried one yet though.

I believe bauer makes a full plastic shield called the recon. Much better optics and airflow over the concept. And it has replaceable lenses.

The recon wouldnt be all that bad but looking at it reminds me of one of those girls softball cages they put on their helmets, i dont know that i could handle looking that goofy!

Honestly, your best option is probably a full cage. Give it some time and you won't even notice it anymore.

+2 for giving the cage some time. You will get used to it and when you catch a high stick

in the face you will be glad you have it.

I use the Bauer combo and love it. I admittedly didn't give the cage much time but I totally hated it. I don't have fog issues at all.

I started playing inline with no face protection (thought better of it with all the sticks that got up high), switched to a Concept II full shield (hated how hot it was), then a 1-Excel half shield & a mouth guard (so at least I felt comfortable that my eyes were well protected). When I made the switch to ice I went with a full cage (Nike Bauer 8500, I think). It took a bit to adjust, but the piece of mind it gives me due to the level of protection & the fact that I don't get hot or constantly have to wipe sweat of my shield made it worth it. I don't really notice it much anymore & I really like the oval bars & the gunmetal color. I'm not sure I'll ever go back to a half shield & I know I won't got back to no facial protection.
