2011-2012 Suspension thread

Recommended Posts

Brad Marchand just got a 5 + game for clipping Sami Salo. Total disregard for the puck and went for the knees...without a doubt should be a suspension. And within two minutes Bobby Butler clipped James van Riemsdyk with an elbow to the face. I'd say both will be looked at tomorrow.

As the video shows...(Marchand)

I think Marchad will be gone at least 5.

I'm hoping Lucic won't because of the line change & plus of all the Canucks around the bench.

I can't figure out what Salo was trying to do. He didn't crouch or put his stick down to go for the puck, he didn't seem to be going for much of a check, he just coasted in and turned around, making it hard for him to see what would happen at collision time.

Julien said that he wants his players to protect themselves. He doesn't mind if they take a penalty vs. geting injured. I don't think Marchad was trying to prtoect himself but someone will probably think twice before taking a run at him.

I still think 5 games.

Salo turned as Marchand was making the hit, I don't see a long suspension for this one.

I hope your right. The more I see it the less it bothers me. It was definitly a penalty & it will be a suspension. I'm not going change now so I say 5 games.

It was absolutely a cheap, low shot. That said, Salo's actions "immediately before or concurrently with the hit from Marchand" or however Shanny puts it, make the outcome far worse than it should have been.

Here's a longer version of the hit. Notice before the hit actually takes place, Marchand and Salo are going at it, with Marchand landing a punch to Salo's head. I feel like Marchand is a dirty, dirty player who has the ability to hide behind guys like Chara, Thornton, and Lucic. After the first view I thought it'd be a few games, but after seeing what came before the actual hit I hope it's a lot more than that. It shows he deliberately tried to hurt Salo....and job well done. Now he has a concussion.

Check out that dude behind the glass doing the "cut the throat" move towards Salo.

Class act #1

You gotta love the courage that glass will give someone.

Marchand is a dirty player, but when challenged earlier this season, he answered the call and dropped the gloves, I wouldn't say he hides behind those guys, especially considering Chara and Lucic rarely fight at this point in their careers, contrary to the belief of those who don't watch every Bruins game. As for the hit, it looked like Marchand's hip made contact with Salo's thigh, so I don't understand what the big deal is. It was not at his knees or even targeting the knee whatsoever. And if Marchand wanted to concuss Salo, do you really think a hip check is the way to go about that? That is insane to think that Marchand was predicting Salo would do a full flip and land on his head, especially considering Salo turned at the last second (no idea what he was doing, made no attempt to play the puck or the man). I'm ok with the penalty because of Marchand's reputation and even with him getting the boot from the game because he had been running around (as had most players on both teams) and the refs needed to keep the game in control, but a suspension for a hip to thigh check? Come on. Keep in mind Marchand gives up 6 inches to Salo, so of course the hit is going to be lower than Salo's hip when it comes from Marchand's. As for length of suspension, Marchand had a phone conference with Shanahan, so IIRC that means the suspension can't be more than 5 games. I'd say he gets 2, because of his reputation and his suspension last season making him a repeat offender

Marchand does some dirty things, nobody can argue that. However, I don't believe that he hides behind the likes of Chara, Lucic, and Thornton. For one thing, he is hardly, if ever on the ice with Thornton these days and even less likely to be on the ice with Lucic, another left wing.

I don't watch much Bruins hockey, it's just what it seemed like from what I have watched. Either way, it's five games for Marchand.

5 games for Marchand, I have to say, I'm surprised. Hopefully this will quiet the Bruin-detractors who claim the league favors Boston with these decisions.

Edit: beat to the link

There will still be plenty of people complaining.

As for Salo having a concussion we will see over time.

What I still can't understand is what, aside from Marchand's history, sets that particular hit apart from Marchand on Sedin or Hamuis on Lucic from the finals last season, or Ballard? on Campbell? earlier in Saturday's game, none of which were subject to supplemental discipline.

Was Marchand's check objectively worth 5 games? No, I don't think so. However, Shanny was likely putting a few nickels and dimes together to get to a dollar. Marchand's done some things before and so have some of the other Bruins, who've gotten away without repercussions. Shanahan is simply firing a warning shot.
