2011-2012 Suspension thread

Recommended Posts

There was just some good stuff on NHL Network, with the Brendan Shanahan being questioned by three of their TV types. He went over some of the rules, some video, and discussed a bit of the feedback he got at the GM meetings. This guy sounds like he's trying very hard to do a good job.

The GMs shouldn't be his constituency, none of them ever want their guy suspended.

He's got to deal with them about where he draws the line. Hearing about who crossed it when is something else again.

And that's why Colin Campbell was ineffective. The NHLPA doesn't want players suspended and the NHL GMs don't want players suspended. To be honest, most fans only want players on other teams suspended too. It's not like Shanny has been any more consistent, or logical, than Campbell, I should know better than to expect miracles.

Miracles, no. The NHL won't change overnight. But I appreciate that Shanahan is making his videos, and pointing out his criteria. It's guidance, even though it may invite more specific criticism as to his analysis in a given instance.

I was surprised he mentioned the way Kronwall hits and how they have been watching closely how he turns his back so he doesn't get pinned with "targeting the head".

Did you guys see the hit on Jason Demers by Glencross last night? Im trying to not be bias, but it looked like the definition of intent to injure. I cant find a video now, but ill try to find it.

I didn't see that, but I didn't see the whole thing. The only thing I heard about Kronwall turning his back during hits was a discussion on how low his hips made contact, in the context of clipping. They had a few video examples, including the Marchand hit on Salo.

I can't recall from what day it was but it was when he was talking about the hit on Voracek.

That hit didn't deserve more than two minutes, IMO, and I'm a Sharks fan.

He's definitely gonna sit out some time because of this and having prior discipline this season and last. My guess is three games, ugly play though.

He deserves a few games for the cheap shot, but he may get the "classy veteran" exception. Hard to tell anymore. Torres should also get a few games for stirring up the situation by slashing Ott and starting more fights once things calmed down.

That was a pretty dumb move by Doan and hope he gets to sit a few games. As a repeat offender I can't see him getting under 3 games but then again who knows what to expect anymore? This is where Shanahan must be tough on players. This is a bonehead move to stick the elbow out on purpose in order to get a piece of the other player's head. There is no possible defense here for Doan as his gesture was just too obvious.

The fact that he's a repeat offender and was practically doing the chicken dance into Benn's face really gives Shanahan the chance to come down hard on Doan. I just hope he comes through on this one.

Not to defend Torres, but for Ott to chirp my captain (wrong or right) then I'd come a-callin', too.

The game would be better off without them both

Three games for Doan, and right on cue, another reckless elbow to the head tonight. I guessed correctly with Doan, so I'll say 5 games for Keith. Regardless of the fact that he's never been fined or suspended, this is pure garbage.

Duncan Keith on Daniel Sedin.

Daniel finished his hit as he was in process of dishing the puck, the puck was never near Daniel's possession when Keith hit him. If Daniel's hit is punishable then you have to go back and charge Keith with premeditating his hit.

No one is discounting Keith's hit. It was dirty, and very intentional, but Sedin's hit was not the cleanest thing either.

Everyone can see both hits here, back to back.

Finishing his check with a shoulder to the face? Y'ok. They were both dirty.

If the league is trying to get rid of this stuff, yes I agree Daniel should have been penalized. However, if they are going to penalize Daniel for that like they should then Keith's punishment should be substantially more because then we are talking about a premeditated, revengeful attack which was deliberately carried out to injure Daniel in retaliation. That's the key difference.

More? Yes. Substantially more? Depends on your definition of substantial.
