Idea for gear developers: Padded pads

Recommended Posts

There have been alot of head injuries that could've probably been avoided if the elbow and shoulder pads have been made differently. What's the point of making the caps on these two pieces of gear rock hard? Wouldn't it be possible to add an outer layer of padding, making them softer if someone gets hit by a shoulder or elbow to the face? The only drawbacks I could see would be a bit bulkier equipment, but with the safety concerns that are common nowadays (changing the board glass, new rules and whatnot), wouldn't this be a good idea for the manufacturers to consider? I don't know if there are any people representing for example Reebok or Bauer reading these boards, but if so, maybe this idea would be worth taking into consideration in order to prevent head injuries. Just my two cents.

Good timing, I'm sure quite a few people just saw the section on HNIC where they just showed a new type of CCM shoulder pad using HD foam on the outside. The league is supposably trying to get players into this new style padding this season. They said the caps flexed a little and they were ultra light...

The new CL has a blend of U+ Foam. The only thing that is "hard" are the spine and sternum plates. It is pretty impressive.

I believe they showed the new CL on the Hotstove segment of HNIC tonight...

That's what they were. I'm a big fan of those shoulders, really think they will do well at retail.

Is there any Jofa R&D behind these pads? I'm not sure how much of the Jofa tech is used in CCM gear, but I would hope they carry some over to their line like Reebok does. As someone who has suffered a couple shoulder injuries, the softer shoulder cap makes me a skeptic. I would be more inclined to trust the product if the Jofa name is behind it, though.

I hope posting a picture is OK since it was on national TV last night in Canada. My apologies in advance if not.

That's a pretty good look at my next pair of shoulders. I just wish the sternum protection was smaller. I guess I just need to get smaller up top so that doesn't stick out as much. The pads are incredibly comfortable and there's nothing on them that will retain sweat/water.

No, Laura Gibson at CCM did a great job with them. The shoulder cap is the NHL-spec with the U-foam cover.

My bad. I haven't been in the market for pads for a while, so I didn't really pay attention.

Though I guess that means it's good that they're starting to become noticed and are showing up on shows like HNIC

Both Warrior and CCM's pads at retail last year were NHL-spec. This isn't anything new in terms of shoulder caps.

I know the Projekts and U+ Pros were NHL-spec, but what about the rest of the line? (Fit09, Franchise?)

Great to see the CCM name brand getting more exposure for this. I've noticed many players this year using the U+Pro pad and the introduction of the CL will only further pave the way for the CCM name to get more market share in the protective section traditionally dominated by Reebok (yeah, same company I know).
