Suggestions for Protective yet Mobile - Pants, Shoulders & Elbows

Recommended Posts

Whats Up ModSquad!

In the Market for some new pads here, and wondering what guy's on the boards have been using and liking and could recommend. Currently got some Bauer Supreme One60 pants, and a pair of old school Bauer shoulder and elbows. Far as pants go, I like the supreme style, just feel One60's lack protection for college level play. Anyone using TotalOne pants? Or would recommend something similar or better?

Shoulder and elbow pads have always been a hard one for me to shop for, and I've always tried to avoid it. Hence why I've pretty much had the same pairs my whole life lol. I am around 185, 5"11 and I play forward. I'm really in search of the pad that is going to give me a solid amount of protection, yet not inhibit any range of motion or mobility in any way!

Thanks in Advance Guys!

My most favourite mobile but protective setup:

Pants: Bauer X:40s (one of the most popular on here)

Shins: CCM Tacks 552, work perfect with my knee brace too

Elbows: Bauer Supreme Classic

Shoulders: Bauer Supreme Classic

I'd agree with HockeySavants' suggestions, I'd also recommend taking a look at the CCM U+, Fit09 and Fit07 Shoulders/Shins/Elbows. They provide excellent protection and mobility. I'm also impressed by the mobility/protection on the RBK KFS line of shoulders (last years 10K was great, this years 11K and 9K are similar). The Warrior Projekt or Koncept elbows are worth looking at too, a little less protection than the CCM Fit09 or U+pro, but tons of mobility.

For pants, if you're happy with the fit of your Supreme one60's, both the one80 and TotalOne are great. The total one is a bit lighter, and has a little more protection up top (kidneys/spine) but I think both would be protective enough for competitive play.

Those classics look like the Sherwood 9950 I wear for men's league games, and if they are you'd absolutely get destroyed wearing them and taking big hits. I don't think I could get away with wearing those. I wish!

Thanks! Yeah, I tried on the Totalones today and felt significantly more padding in the kidney/spine. Also tried on X60 girdle (first girdle I've ever put on in my life- and felt it was very restrictive and not enough padding.)

How are warrior shoulder pads? Their Koncept elbows look promising!

A few MSH'ers really love their Bauer girdles (I recall reading good reveiws of both the X:60 and the TotalOne Adaptable Core pad) However, people seem to either love or hate girdles. If you're used to a traditional fit, the TotalOne pants are great. I'd say Eagle/Tackla provide some of the best protection in the hip/thigh area, but I think the TotalOne's provide a little more mobility, and are still very protective, especially up top.

I honestly can't say about the Warrior shoulders, I haven't used them. The CCM and the RBK shoulders have tons of mobility. The biggest difference is, the CCM's shoulder cap sits lower, the RBK shoulder caps sit up a bit higher.

Tackla 9000 pants

As far as pants go, I'm going to strongly agree with this suggestion. The 9000s, 5000s and their derivatives are excellent pants in terms of giving you that 'traditional' feel. I have a pair of 5500 Airs and they're amazingly protective and mobile.

Regarding the other pieces of protective, I'm going to echo the Warrior suggestions as well. Those guys fit a size smaller so if you're into a Medium in other pads, you'll have to go Small in Warrior most likely. While they're not the absolute best in terms of protection bulk, the Projekts or Franchises get the job done. The newer shoulders are much slimmer than previous pads too.

Try the Warrior Projekt line of protective - I use the girdle, elbows and shins and am very happy with both the mobility and protection.

The girdle is very comfortable and mobile while still providing good protection, but be aware that they used a belt that was too small for most people in all sizes (they were made aware of this and may have fixed this on recent runs) so you might have to replace the belt. When trying them on just leave the belt completely undone.

I'd go with the Projekt elbows over the Koncepts - the mobility is similar, but the straps on the Projekts seem both more comfortable and durable (although I did have to have the stiching resewn on the middle straps. They've held up well since then). The Koncepts use elastic straps and the Projekts have neoprene type straps. Being the higher end pad of the two I imagine the Projekts would be more protective as well.

I haven't used the Projekt shoulders, but they do look protective and I've tried them on and the do feel mobile. I've also tried on the high end Reebok pads and while the shoulder caps are a bit bulky they still felt very mobile. I've also read good things about the CCM pads - both the current lines and the upcoming new pads coming out in the spring (there is a thread on those and they're supposed to be lighter than any other high end pads currently on the market while still being protective enough for full contact). I personally wear Farrell shoulders and they're very mobile, but I'm only playing beer league. If I was playing full contact I'd consider pads like the Projekt, high end Reeboks and CCM pads as they seem to offer better clavical and rib protection (the Projekt has good wrap around rib protection).

I like lower sitting shoulder pads, so I'm def going to give the CCM's a try. Especially now hearing about the new line up that's coming in the spring, maybe I should wait? Not going to need new gear till around that time anyway.

I guess I'm not a girdle player. I can't seem to believe that they really offer the same level of protection as regular pants, and I can't deal with the close to the skin feel, Esp now how I wear my pants (unzipped and loose at the legs.) I think Total one's where I'm going.

For elbows it's gonna be a hard search for me, because I'm currently using a pair that's similar to the Bauer Classics, which feel almost like nothing. Wish I could use them, and get away with them...but I doubt it.

Tackla 9000 pants

protective, loose and no issues with mobility. I still think these are the best pants I've ever used. I really like a lot of the warrior protective gear, especially the shoulders and elbows.

I have give a +1 for the Tackla 9000 pants since their mobility and padding is amazing. I can't vouch for the Warrior Projekt line since I have the Koncept elbows and Hitman shoulders.

The Hitman shoulders seem to have a little bulk but nothing to crazy. The Koncept elbows have awesome mobility and are pretty light. I play D though, so I don't really mind a little bulk in padding.

If I was in your position and didn't need new protective until the spring I'd probably wait on buying the shoulder pads until I could try the new CCM CL U+ pads discussed in the other thread and any similar products from other manufacturers. If you need to buy sooner than the Projekts and current high end CCMs are a couple that you should check out.

I wouldn't feel as compelled to wait for the new lines for the pants or elbows since I haven't read anything about products that are significantly different in those categories (it doesn't mean there aren't going to be advancements in those areas, but there hasn't been any discussion of revolutionary new pants or elbows) and you can likely find some of those on clearance sometime between January and late March (depending on how early the stores your shopping start to clear out the lines that are being replaced). Of course the longer you wait the more information you'll likely pick up about any new lines so I'd probably wait until January or Feb unless there's an amazing deal on something that works well for you before then.

I don't think you'll find anything that's similar to the Bauer Classics that's very protective for elbows, but in my opinion the Projekts are the most mobile of the high end pads. I agree with AIREAYE regarding the sizing - I did have to go from size large Bauer elbows to medium Projekts though as I found the sizes ran big.

Girdles vs. pants is personal preference. If you're not into girdles then the Takla 9000 or TotalOne pants are good suggestions for mobile pants with protection.

Bauer one 80 pant for sure! best pant I have ever worn.

Shoulder and elbows pads are Bauer one 60. Perfect, lightweight, protective, and won't drain your wallet.

Not big on a lot of Padding when it comes to my shin guards. I have the Bauer Vapor X30. I play defense and they protect well against slap shots.

Thanks for all the replies and input guys.

Gonna hold out for a bit, till that new CCM line is released and see what they have to offer in terms of shoulder protection.

Pants- I'm pretty much set on the TotalOnes-they are one bad ass pant! Def no hesitation in the corners with those on! :)

it's going to be five months or more before they hit stores. That's more than a little bit.
