I got my new Graf G70 skates. They seem to fit like a glove, but oh my god the pain when I skate is unbearable! However, I remember my RBKs being a similar pain - but I had always assumed they just didnt fit. Once I put Superfeet in my RBKs, they feel like slippers. I almost loathe using the Grafs now, even though the RBKs dont fit right (I fail the pencil test by a mile). I know it's just a matter of working them in, but DAMN.

I'm also not so sure about the heels in them. The toebox is great, but I get a bit of heel slippage if I don't crank the laces tight. I'm sure it will get better once I break them in a bit. It took my RBKs a few months. Perhaps another bake may help? Does anyone know the baking procedure for Graf G70s? Temp and time?

I also ordered a new helmet from hockeymonkey. CCM V10, just like my current white one. Except... the helmet they sent me had a expiration date of SEPT-2012 on it. So I only get to use my brand-spankin-new helmet for 9 months, guys? Heh. They exchanged it though, so thats good.

I also went looking for shoulder pads. I was in Vapor X:30 shoulders, but they just seemed massive. Like I was a football player or something. I thought the Warrior Bully shoulders looked a bit more low profile, and they ARE slightly smaller, but they FEEL more bulky. I dont even notice the X:30s when I'm wearing them, they just look silly. Do you guys have some suggestions on what else I might want to look at? I don't want any of the old-school style sher-woods or bauer classics or anything, I just want something fairly low profile, preferably under or around $100.

Full price, of course! heh.

They ARE advance-replacing it though, and sending me a shipping label to send it back with. (Though I prefer the older V10s with the logo on the flaps rather than where the stickers go)

Honestly, if they had just refunded half or something, id have been fine with it. Nobody would ever notice the sticker in a div5 beer league...

For the skates I don't know the baking instructions, but it's usually 200F for 4-7min perhaps you could call/email your lhs/graf company...

For low profile shoulders, I'd suggest ccm line is more of a lower profile as the shoulder's design is different. That's what I have, and I found them good...

Thanks, I was looking at the CCM stuff. It looks pretty low profile because of the way the shoulders are constructed.

I just got my replacement helmet. Wow. It's COMPLETELY different. The foam on the inside is a different color, the mask isnt even the same shape, and the chin cup is attached to the mask. Whatever, the sticker says 2017, and that's the important part!

Thanks!

Well, add a new cage to my list of equipment woes... Tried a Bauer RBE VIII mask (black/white) on a CCM V10 helmet. Large mask, large helmet... mask doesn't even come close to fitting right. WAY too big.

I had to move the chin cup a "row" of bars, and when i look down, the bottom of the cage touches my collarbones. If it was one row shorter, it would fit fine. Oh well, one more thing to send back to Hockeygiant. The chin cup I bought is the wrong color too - I ordered black, they sent orange.

I'm having the absolute worst luck...

Heels will not get more narrow, especially with baking. It sounds like the heel is too wide for you.

I'm actually starting to wonder if it's not so much the heel width so much as the heel/backstay shape. The G70 has a medium heel width, moderately pronounced heel/backstay shape, and a deep instep depth.

Since Graf doesnt have a boot with a narrow heel and deep instep depth (according to their little chart on their website), I wonder if the Ultra G7 might actually be better for me. They describe it as medium heel width, straight heel/backstay shape, and medium/deep instep depth (somehow controlled by a "fit flap", that I see no information on how it works on their site).

Either way, since buying a new pair of skates isn't really an option (ah, the downside to skate buying... when it feels great in the store but not so good on the ice, you cant return it..) as I've bought two pairs of skates in the last 12 months, I need to try to do a little something to "tweak" the fit. I think I may try these: http://www.icewarehouse.com/descpage.html?pcode=EZ2MM

Obviously they won't fix the root of the problem, but they might help a little bit for now.

Are you suggesting I buy those? Perhaps Ill try them someday - but I JUST bought these Grafs, so no new skates for quite a while. At least a year or two most likely.

I have the CCM fit06 shoulder pads which are pretty low profile. they might be a bit light for you. I play in a no check league but well, people still "bump." I am sure you understand. While the 05s might be too light-weight, the point was that they are pretty low profile and don't get in the way at all. Honestly, I don't even notice I have them on when I am playing.

Optimus, ever thought of using ankle booties? They are thin neoprene sleeves that you slip over your feet or socks to take up additional volume around your ankle. They work well with preventing blisters as well.

I just ordered some. I actually don't notice any heel lift at all in my left foot, so I'm hoping it's just minor enough of a problem that it can be solved with the booties. Can't hurt to try!

Farrell is a bit pricey. Like I said, I'm going to go with the CCM Fit09. They appear lower profile that the Bauers I have now, and as long as they are comfortable (the Warror Bullys I got were not at all) I'll be happy. Honestly, I'm happy to keep the Bauers if the CCMs don't work out. There's nothing WRONG with them, they just make me look like a football player.
