Anybody scorekeep (beer league, youth, HS, college, etc)?

Recommended Posts

Anybody scorekeep? If so, what level(s) and why do you do it? What do you like/dislike about it?

Signed up to scorekeep the higher division of my local beer league on my non-game nights once a week or as needed. Seems like an easy gig since we don't tally shots/saves and it's running time.

Basically I'll just keep score, set the penalty clock (I bet penalties are pretty rare anyway), watch my fellow has-been's and never-was's play some shinny, and collect the $15/hour for the hockey gear fund (which is running low now that I finally got some new U+06's).

Also, it's not a huge part of it, but I feel like running the clock for my local beer league is my way of giving back to the game that always gave to me.

I scorekeep for my kids games (no pay)... so mite/squirt youth league. It's a way for us for us to save on expenses by having volunteers scorekeep. I always enjoy it. Kids at this age are funny when they get penalties... with the exception of the young mites who sometimes start bawling. As a parent though it can be tough to remember that your technically on off-ice official, and as such are suppose to stay neutral.

When our team managers don't show up for varsity, I usually end up running the clock/scoreboard and filling in the score sheet. I thankfully just had a playoff game with a 2-1 score and NO penalties. Everything from old machines/boards to touch screens. It's interesting to see how far clocks have come!

I've done it on and off since I was 17( I am 24 now) I knew all the refs from playing so it was fun hanging out with them and every now and then you would get some barn burners that were pretty fun to watch.

I manage the scorekeepers for our league and work games myself from time to time. the geek in me enjoys it and it's been very useful to get to know all the refs. it also doesn't hurt that when I work my gf's games I get paid for it. I get free hockey in all my leagues (3 total teams) for managing the scorekeepers and still get paid when I work a game. pretty sweet set up. :)

the worst time I ever had though was when I got hit in the head with a clearing attempt during a AAA level game. 9 stitches right where the forehead meets the hairline. the guy who hit me (a friend and totally accidentally) bought me beer for a year though. :)

Easy work and easy money.

I've done probably 1,000 games since 2009. This is the best way to describe it, haha

Depends on the league/team. Apparently my current team's summer incarnation spent at least half of every game on the PK.

A score sheet from last years championship game in our league. (There was some more on the back of the sheet)

First night of beer league scorekeeping is in the books (pun intended). Aside from the scoreboard horn going off randomly and giving me heart attacks (rink manager said they'd get it looked at) and having a brain fart on how to enter a penalty on the clock, it was fun.

Other things I learned:

1) Hockey rinks are cold if you are not playing.

2) The standard hockey scoreboard user interface was designed in 1948 by a blind Russian cosmonaut. Why the HELL don't they make scoreboard interfaces more intuitive?

3) No matter how much hockey I watch or play, there's always something new or at least never seen before that happens in almost every game.

I used to do it for a beer league and I got $15 a game. It was pretty damn entertaining in itself. I needed some extra money and I did just under so it didn't get taxed.

yep. I recommend purchasing a $15 portable heater from Target. makes a huge difference especially if you're doing a black of games.

Been doing the beer league scorekeeping gig and it's surprisingly more fun than I thought. And it's super easy, but you do need your $hit together.

Now I'm wondering how I can get to be a "professional" scorekeeper or scoreboard operator for minor, college, pro games? I'm sure it's a "who you know/ who you blow" type of situation, but if anyone has any thoughts, please share.

I run either penalty box or shot keeper for my USHL team. VERY entertaining. You hear some amazing chirps and get to watch the best junior players in the US at ice level. When I run the penalty box I have to keep the calm making sure they don't do something stupid like hop the box and engage another player. Also am in charge of +/- while doing the box. Best part hands down is the chrips I hear. Especially on nights the game turns into a gongshow. Best game I've done was this one: http://ushl2011.stats.pointstreak.com/boxscore.html?gameid=1660207 I ran the Youngstown penalty box... hilarious.

When running shots I'm between the boxes in the scoresbox, easiest gig there is, just have to pay attention to who shot and if it was on net.

Dr Hook, the way I got into it is my friend was/is doing the penalty box, needed someone to do it since they were super short staffed that night, so I did home box (easier then away) and did a good job, and have been doing it off and on since. Pretty much you gotta know people. Same with most things in life.

the least you could do is keep a rough count on shots ;) ... as you know, its valuable info to have on hand if you're playing, and its not that difficult to do on your end.

It's basically a pickup skate where we keep score and the clock is run. In other words, nobody really cares about stats. However, my other league does keep track of everything, and scorekeeping those games is a much more involved affair.

I used to run A to D league as a score keeper. I had a blast, bought me my first car. We did not keep SOG but had time stoppage, and the rest of the usual stats. I took it seriously, even as a 15 year old, and put an insane amount of pressure on myself. Here is what I learned and what you may expect. It gave me a perspective on the game I feel I never would have had as a fan, player, or ref. That is where I truly had the lightbulb go off with "whole ice" picture. I never milked the clock as I would never want to be cheated. And in the end, I could eat Chinese takeout with chopsticks or take a nap, all without missing a stoppage or plugging in a penalty without looking at the box. It will come!

Years ago, it was actually a pretty decent side gig to score keep the beer league games. They always seemed to have a shortage of score keepers, so it was nothing to end up with 200 or 250 extra bucks a week. I'd still do it if it worked with my current schedule. I'll admit it was sometimes challenging to stay as mentally involved in low level games as you should. Everyone pays the same, so your level of entertainment with the game is irrelevant. But yeah, it's easy to check out of the puck chasing. So that becomes a form of discipline unto itself.
