Disagreement With League Director Regarding Forfeit

Recommended Posts

Agreed. It's amazing how much the respect level for somebody will go up when they can admit to their mistakes. Sometimes, resolving an issue by owning up to your own mistake can even lead to a closer relationship than you had already.

(hint, hint... hockeytron...)

Good on him for owning up to it. In a competitive hockey situation I can completely understand requiring that a team be present at the rink, with enough skaters, to take a forfeit. In beer league hockey if a guy calls the league director, says that they don't have enough players, they need to forfeit, the opposing team shouldn't have to be out the time and money to show up to the rink. I think I'd just find a positive way to communicate that there is a different sensibility involved in rec league sports.

Though personally, considering you pay for the ice time, I think I'd have showed up for the skate.

Agreed. We were pleased with the outcome, and actually pretty surprised to be honest. I did reply to him right away, letting him know we were satisfied with his decision, and thanking him for his time.

I agree that the director really stepped up and took the hit admitting his mistake. In the future expect to 1)Have to show up to be awarded the win on the forfeit and 2)Have five players there to be awarded the forfeit because I'm pretty sure he won't make the same mistake again.

Your director was wrong, good that he recognized his mistake(s) and fixed the situation. Sounds like he cares about the league, which is more than can be said about many directors. Also, good job not losing your cool over it.

My recommendation for him in the future: if a team says in advance that they can't make a game, then if the game cannot be rescheduled, the team that cancels forfeits the game. The opponent should not be forced to drive to the arena if it's previously known there won't be a game, especially with some of the times of beer league games.

Late in the game, but the bottom line from all those long-winded emails was to ask the LD what was the point of calling you ahead of time when you could not "earn" a victory by forfeit without showing up? If he wasn't going to grant you the 2 points ahead of time, and expected you to show up to get them, he shouldn't have reached out to you prior to the game start time.

Now one can argue that if he knew the other team could not make it and it was a late game, during a time of $5.00/gallon gas, that it would be a proper courtesy to save 15 or more people from having to drive to the rink at that hour.

It is people's natural reaction to become initially hostile, and prove they are right/better, etc., turning a situation into a competition, but you handled it well and let the LD realize on his own he had reneged on a promise - and rectify it later on. He sounds like he wants to improve in the position, and that cannot be said about everyone running a league.

I just have to ask.....

You said called your teammates and they had an open sheet of ice and enough guys to play a pickup game and only 2 of the boys were up for a skate?

Keeping in mind that they were all planning on skating anyway had it been a league game, seems like maybe your team has alot of guys that are on the fence whether they even want to play hockey or not...is there a big difference between a mere scrimmage and a beer league game?

10:30 on a Monday is pretty damn late... and I don't see what this has to do with the issue.

Youre right, it has nothing to do with them forfeiting or not.

I'm just saying that the team was planning on being there for a skate and the sheet was waiting for them. The guys I play with would have showed up because they were going to show up anyway and if there was enough guys to pick up a game, then why not? It's not like a beer league game is worth anymore than a beer league pickup...

Not picking on anyone, just making an observation...back to my hole..

When I have a 10:30 night game I usually don't get home until at least 12:00 and to bed by 1:00 if I'm lucky...and I only live 15 minutes from the rink. I have to get up at 5:00 am for work. If the guys on his team work I'm betting most of them would rather get a few more hours of sleep than play pickup hockey or have a sheet for an hour. I know I would.

Example:

We had our summer season opener last night at 10:20pm. I got out of work at 9pm, picked my friend up, and drove to the rink. Got to the rink at 10pm (45 minute drive if you factor out getting gas and picking my friend up). After the game, post game shower, and locker room BS, my friend and I left the rink at 12am and I was finally home by 1am. After hanging up my gear to dry it was 1:15 am-ish. I probably fell asleep around 1:30 - 1:45 am. Got up for work at 7:45 am and have proceeded to drag butt all day here. I do not blame anyone for not wanting to show up for a 10:30 game when there is no opponent to play. I love hockey, and have no commitment issues with it. But a full night's sleep before work the next day beats out a meaningless drop-in game

Point taken....I too live an hour from the rink so on those late nights I get home really late, much to my wifes chagrin...
