Music and the NHL - What Do/Don't You Like?

What is the NHL's obsession with Nickelback? I always hear them played on NHL Network, during ads, etc. That band is terrible, and most people I know despise them. Certainly they can't have some sort of hockey niche market, can they?

On another note, is anyone tired of their team's (or an opponent's) goal celebration song/music? I'm a Blackhawks fan, but I think Chelsea Dagger needs to go. Other opinions from around the league, i.e., Zombie Nation, Bro Hymn, Crowd Chant..?

I love the techno/dubstep song they play during canadian junior games. I have no idea what it is but every time I hear it the fans start to go nuts on tv. Sick of cotton eyed Joe too!

Maybe we should petition the NHL to exclude their music from future broadcasts. A guy in Detroit started a petition to have them removed from the Lions vs. Packers halftime show last year. I think he got over 9k signatures...

The overall public's taste is music has been going down the tubes for the last 5-10 years. I can't believe some of the stuff people get down to these days. The worst thing I have seen the NHL do with music was the guy that was singing during the all star game intoductions this year. I had to change the channel until it was over. Made me want to rip my hair out lol

With the Nickelback thing, my guess is it has something to do with them playing the NHL Award show (http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=628770) maybe something in their contract for that?

As far as goal songs, Philly's drives me nuts and needs to go!

I don't mind any goal songs, although Chelsea Dagger still gives me nightmares being a Flyers fan. I hate the guys with the air horns at games....looking at you Washington. And as far as Nickelback goes, there's a reason Detroit petitioned to not have them perform at their Thanksgiving game. Does anyone actually LIKE them? Because they make me want to rip my ears off.

I admit, I do like some Nickelback, but maybe b/c they are Canadian they get the hockey venues??? At least Avril Lavigne, Celine Dionne, and Bryan Adams haven't made a Canadian collaboration. :)

Yeah, I get that's overdone to hate Nickelback, but c'mon NHL. It embarassing. It'll be one thing to use a song every once and a while - but undertaking such a major promotion with a single band is ridiculous, especially when its such a polarizing one. Total tone-deaf move by NHL marketing.

And I agree that Chelsea Dagger is a fantastic goal song.

DOOOOOOOOOOOOOPPPPPPPPPPP!!!! The only beef I have with that song is that the Flyers 'stole' the song from the Philadelphia Union haha. Other than that, I like it. And I don't know if this qualifies as a song, but Habs' fans chanting 'Olé! Olé! Olé!' Only fútbol fans should be allowed to participate in this chant haha.

It is the cool thing to hate Nickelback but I've seen some interviews with respected guys in metal who sing their praises. You have to get past the popular chick songs and maybe you'll find more of a taste for them.

Personally, not a Nickelback fan...but how can you go wrong with "Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting" on a Saturday night before faceoff?

We are very Top 40 with our game day music. Some Rock/Classic Rock. No Country (not that I haven't asked) and almost no Techno. Kernkraft by Zombie Nation works good with a video we use...so that stayed. I hate "Sand Storm" and so does our mascot...so that NEVER gets played. No Jock Jams (ie: 2Unlimited) no Cotton Eyed Joe.

Pregame/intermission music is very very Top 40. Like, take your favorite CHR radio station's playlist...as long as it isn't a ballad, we play it.

Whistle breaks during period are about 65-45 Top40/Rock.

It's actually funny...the fans started a goal dance a few years ago to "Who Let The Dogs Out" (yes, I know cheesy...but hell...we're the Bulldogs)....this video had the exact same 'dance' so they switched the goal song last year.
