Could I have gotten the wrong size skates?

Recommended Posts

I wear an 8.5 in regular sneakers, 8 in dress shoes. When I was measured at the shop, they said I was between a 6.5 and 7 for skates. i went with the 6.5. When you take the foot thing out of the boot, my toes go to the end of it. I had them baked and have skated on them for about 14 hours now. When I first bought them i felt like my toe was touching the front. Now after they've broken in, my ankle feels locked in and good, but it feels like my toes are swimming up in the front of the skate. like there is too much room.

is it unheard of that people have to go down 2 sizes from their dress shoe instead of just 1.5?

im shoe size 13, skate size 10.5 EE vapor x60.

Chances are if your ankle is good and locked, your toes might only be a few mm from the end. your probably just at that point of "past feathering" where your toes no longer touch. measure your foot on the insole and see how it looks. mine go right to the end but thats how I like it

i forgot to mention that they are size 6.5 D Bauer Vapor.

I did measure against the insole. i took it out of the boot, put it on the floor and my toes come to the end.

When you say 13 shoe size, you mean sneaker or dress shoe? Either way it would be 2 or 2.5 sizes down.

Put the insole back in the skate and see if it touches the ends of the skate.

As your skate breaks in and after baking, your heel will move back deeper into the skate which will create a bit more room at the front.

As long as your ankle is locked in, and your foot is coming to the end of the insole, and the insole is the correct size for the skate, you should be OK.

If you feel you're swimming in at the front changing footbed can make a difference.

You can stick a little bit of foam or any material you like against the toe cap so you can feel reassured touching the end of your boot. is it only swimming in at the front lengthwise or width wise as well?

I'm a 8.5 or 9 in most shoes. My Vapor APX's are 6-5/8 and 6-3/4. When I was still using my Grafs, I was wearing 7's. My x60's were 7.5 and I was swimming in them. A jump in 2 sizes isn't uncommon at all.

With Bauers, I don't think you're too far off the mark going 1.5 down from dress shoes. I went 2 sizes down from my dress shoe in CCMs (10.5 dress to 8.5 D in CCM U+10). It's a tight fit, but I like it. I tried Bauer supremes at the store, they were the best fit for me out of the box in size 9, but too expensive. Vapors felt real narrow in a 9, so if you try 2 sizes down in Vapors you better make sure the width is wider. For me, CCM and Reebok both felt like a nice snug fit in 8.5. Feels tight in the width when I put them on cold, but after playing for 5 minutes, they feel great. 2.5 sizes down from dress shoe would have been too much, when you start bumping down like that, you really need to increase the width.

I don't feel my toes touching the front of the boot like I did when I first got them. Where I really feel the extra room is the volume in the front. From the top to the bottom of the boot. I can clench my toes (equivalent of making a fist) easy and have lots of room to do it.

But my heel is locked in pretty good still. I have really narrow small feet.

I am roughly 2.5 sizes down in my skates. To reiterate, as long as you have that heel lock and it doesnt feel like there is way too much room in the front of your skates, you are fit well. Are you having any problems as far as pain?

what width are the skates? This can have an effect on how the front of the skate feels. The only reliable way to check for length that I know of is the pencil test:

- take your laces out

- pull the tongue out

- foot into boot and push it forward till the toes feather the toe cap

- bend slightly forward and look down the back of your heel to see how much space there is between the back of your heel and the boot. If you can push a pencil down the back then they are too big for you.

- a gap up to 2mm is a great fit. 2 - 5 mm you are unlucky and need a quarter size drop, 5mm and you need to go down 1/2 a size, 1cm is down 1 full size.

Relating anything to your dress shoe size is pointless, dress shoe manufacturers use different sizing to skate manufacturers and everyone wears a dress shoe differently.

Excellent advice. This is exactly what I was going to suggest.

Skates are 6.5 width d normal. The left is definitely tighter that the right in width. Don't think I could go any more narrow.

I did the pencil trick. As long as I did it right, yes I can fit pencil down to bottom of skate behind heel. There is a lot of room behind my mid calf down to my heel but toward the bottom there isn't much room for anything bigger than the pencil,

Advice? I started asking this cause ever since these started to break in my feet feel a little wobbly. I just don't feel as stable as I did when I first started with them. I have about 15 hours on them.

Also, these are Bauer vapor. Like I said, width is good. If I have to go to a 6 should I stick with them but maybe go to ee width or maybe look to a different skate? Bauer supremes, reebok etc.
