Looking For Opinions On Girdles

Recommended Posts

Hey guys.

I'm in the market for some new pants, and I'm considering a girdle for the first time.

My current pants are Nike/Bauer Vapor 70's. They've been good to me, but they are red and i'm trying to switch all my gear to a more neutral black.

I've looked around at the big online retailers, but I'm not savvy on girdles at all. I'm looking for any recommendations that folks are willing to offer. I play in men's A-Leagues, but there's no checking so they don't have to be super protective. I'm looking more for comfort and mobility, and something that has a shell that doesn't look like a hot mess when it's on over the girdle.

Thanks for any info, guys!

Personal opinion, I've played with the 9k rbk girdle for three years now. Nothing I've worn previously has come close to the protection and comfort. Hard to find these days, but keep your eye out on ebay and the forums.

^a two piece pant will usually be more protective than any girdle out there.

@ op. What do you value most? protection? mobility?

I have tried a few of them and can propably give you some insight. The 9k is the most protective girdle out there but extremely heavy and not durable compared to others and defeats the purpose of a girdle if you ask me. Bauer has the most mobility but lacks some protection in key areas (vapor girdles lack protection in the coccyx area(but very good kidney and lower spine), supremes in the lower spine, kidneys. I have tried the vector girdle and didnt like it, not mobile at all and fits weird and very big, unlike any other girdle on the market.

This is the best girdle imo but it is hard to find at a good price and i suggest hold on to it if you find one. protection, mobility, durability is great on it and comes with a build in cup.

I've never pulled the trigger on a girdle, but I've tried on Warrior, Bauer, Easton, Rbk and CCM girdles, and the Warrior Projekt was my favourite by far in terms of comfort and mobility. All the other ones felt bulky and awkward in comparison, the Projekt girdle is just so streamlined and easy to move in. The nylon belt it comes with seems a bit short, but that's easily replaced. If comfort and mobility is what you're after, you should definitely try it on.

As for the shell, you can generally mix and match shells and girdles, most of the time they don't need to be the same brand/model, so I wouldn't worry about the shell when choosing your girdle.

The NXG is very intriguing, but that comes out next year.

I have been wearing the same style girdle (MBP, MBP8 then ONE95) for about 16 years. I was set to switch to the Projekt but they were out of stock.

I was looking at the Projekt today. I'm really tempted to get that one. Mobility is definitely the biggest factor for me. The Easton's are tempting as well.

I figured the manufacturer of the shell didn't matter too much... I just want it to fit.

I guess my only concer would be the "feel" going from a traditional pant to a more form fitting girdle.

I've used the Projekt for over a year and it's very mobile yet has good protection in key areas like the spine, hip, tail bone and thighs. You're right about the belt - if you go with the Projekts you'll likely have to use another belt as they come with belts that are too short, but you can likely reuse a belt you already have or if you have to buy a new pant belt they're only about $5.

I don't use a Warrior shell with the girdle. No one stocks the Syko shell that Warrior recommends around here - I tried them on with the Warrior Hitman shell and didn't like the fit of that shell (found it a bit baggy over the girdle...I believe it's cut to fit over pants) so didn't use it. I used them with a CCM PP52 shell at first and had no complaints there, but picked up a couple Nike/Bauer Supreme shells from another member and prefer those - they have both a lace up system and a belt which keeps the shell nice and snug and they also have plenty of flex zones and an abrasion-resistant hip overlay (800 denier patch over the 420 denier nylon used for the rest of the shell) . For those reasons I prefer the Bauer Supreme shell over the CCM shell I used and the Hitman shell I tried on over the girdle.

This is the shell I'm referring to: http://www.hockey1.c...&product=

I recommend the lowers from a two-piece pant. They just fit better, and doesn't look like a potato sack.

Why complicate this? I would not use lowers as a shell. also wouldnt it become too thick?

How is it complicating anything?

Instead of buying the "girdle shell," buy a pro stock one, or find an old pair of pants and use the lowers. You can even go as far as to gut a pair of one-piece pants and have additional kidney/rib protection.

It's got a better structure to it, it's more secure as you can lace instead of just having a single belt, so it doesn't shift, it's got better nylon, hamstring protection, and you can enhance protection by keeping the thigh pads in there if you choose to.

I fail to see the problem here. NHL EQMs agree with me.

I'm considering a girdle too, just because then I (probably?) wont need suspenders. Right now I have no choice due to my huge gut pushing my pants downwards, but in a girdle I'd imagine they aren't going anywhere.

The other issue I have is that because I have to wear XL pants due to my size, the spine protection goes up REALLY high, and it's actually my shoulder pads pushing everything down. The shoulder pads also don't sit right because of it.

You will still have that problem, unless you wear the girdle really low and that presents other issues.

OK then, thanks. I'll scrap that idea :) I just figured because it was tighter on the body and also included the leg sections that it would stay up better. I guess that's not the case. Thanks!

What size of lower should I be looking for if I wanted to do this. I am currently wearing a large total one girdle and standard pant shell that I find to big. Thanks.

Have you tried cutting out the six pack protector?

To the OP, I have red pants and to match everyone else on my team I just bought a black shell. Problem solved.

I actually wear a size down. Tighter and it doesn't sag past my knee.

Which is the lightest girdle out? I have an old bauer MBP girlde which I love but I think its time for something new. Even though it was 13 years ago, when I went from traditional pants to girdle, the mobility was by far better. The old MBP has great mobility, anything also similar in fit?

MBP became Vapor MBP8 then ONE95 and then TotalONE; the only difference between the T1 and the MBP is that it's a wrap girdle so no need to lace.

I've been using a Tackla 4500 Girdle and Tackla shell sense the late '90s. Incredibly protective, light weight, and super mobile.

+1

The 4500 is a great girdle for mens league level play. Maybe a little light on protection for more competive play, but super mobile and comfortable. I have a bauer supreme shell that I use over it and I really like the fit.

That makes more sense than your first post. I agree that pro stock shells are much better than retail shells.

I never have any issues with any shells shifting or moving around.

NHL equipement managers can agree, but not all of us have access to lowers/spare pants or the knowledge to do all the modifications you mention. That or i am not

understanding your post clearly and its much easier than it sounds.
