CCM U+ Crazy Light Shin Pads

Recommended Posts

Just would like to know if anyone has a similiar problem with the CCM Crazy Light Shin Pads. My son plays Bantam AAA hockey and is on the ice 5 days a week. Looking at his shin pads last night, I noticed a strange noise when i picked up the shin pad. In the knee area, there was a large foam disc that had dislodged from the plastic cap. I was able to slide it out of both shin pads. It looks like the foam discs had come unglued. Very dissapointed in the product to not even last a season. I am sure the protection is now compromised. I could try to glue the pieces back, but it looks to be very akward. I expected more from a high end product like the new Crazy Light series.

The EXACT same thing has happened to me. Except that I have worn the pads, maybe 10 times. Frustrating as heck. I injured a hip so I have only played once since the disc came loose, but since I am off until after the New Year, I need to attempt to try to re-glue the piece in place. It appears that if you bend the knee back, you can get your hand up inside the kneecap from the front of the pad. At least I hope so.

Any ideas on the best glue to use??

What a pain in the ass for such high end / expensive equipment.

Same thing happened to mine after only the third use. I tried to glue it back but it came unglued again the next game. I'll need to get some crazy glue or something and give it another shot but for now I just leave it in there rattling around. I don't notice it when I'm on the ice and the protection still seems to be there although I haven't had any direct falls on my knees that I can remember. Even with the loose pad I'm sure they are more protective in the kneecap compared to the one90's that I was using prior.

I have not had this happen to my CL pads, but have had multiple other pairs of CCM pads before this and had this happen to all of them. I've never worried about it and just let it be and its never been an issue or decreased the protection at all that I've felt.

i believe ccm/reebok has a 90 day warranty. i had to warranty my CL elbow pads after the strap started tearing up.

I haven't had any issues with the CL shin pads, but I am disappointed in the quality of the straps on the elbow pads. my second pair is tearing up too. Aside from the straps, however, I haven't had any issues with the elbow pads, and I quite like them.

Had this happen to my old CCM Vector's from 2008 or so but I continued to use them until this year. Blocked many shots in them and fell on knees a number of times from being tripped/knocked over and never felt they weren't doing their job.

I just bought a pair or CCM crazy light Shingaurds a month ago and they have started making the rattling noise, some people I know have them and they have the same problem even after getting them warranty replaced. My question is there any point in getting them replaced if they are just going to developed the same fault? the noise doesn't bother me im just wondering if it effects the level of protection?

did anyone get a pair without this fault?

Same thing happened to me! But after my first skate! I didn't hear anything when I first bought it, so when I heard the sound in both shin pads after one ice time, I assumed it was normal (I know), and just a part of the package. The entire CL line sounds great but the shins and elbows have let me down. The elbows show a lot of wear after minimal use and the shins with this sound. The shouldies however I could not be happier. I'm going to see if my store will take these back so I can grab some AX1's shins.

The same thing happened in my U+ Pros after a while. A small inconsequential piece of foam came loose from the glue, and you could see it through the vents in the kneecap. I would see if that's what's causing the noise.

In my unofficial research, it seems that the CL shins seem to have more problems than the CL elbows, shouldies and pants combined. This is based on my reading everything I could come across in forums, reviews, videos, etc.

I have had the same thing happen on Vector U+ 08 and then U+ Pro shins. I figure I never would have noticed if the foam wasn't there in the first place, so it's not worth worrying about. It's like the appendix of shin guards, if you will.

My LHS was nice enough to give me a new pair even the though the warranty had ran out. But like you said, a high end product shouldn't have these problems. I'm going to sell the new pair and go for some warrior ax1s now. Come to think of it, I don't see how the ccm's can cost $40 more than the warriors.

The "pad" that comes loose in the senior pad is a hard disk. I am not sure if it is a plastic or a very hard foam. I have tried 3 different epoxies and adhesives and nothing has worked permanently. If anyone has any suggestions, please share. I know that you can play without these pads in place, I have been doing that, but there is s reason that they were put in originally. They obviously have some type of shock absorbing properties. It is just frustrating for such high end equipment to have such a crappy problem.

The junior shin pads have a soft foam, sponge type pad that also comes loose. That one is easier to glue back in.

Now my LHS is giving the choice of choosing any other top brand pad (nexus 1000, mako, apx, nxg, ax1) Tried the apx and didnt like the strapping at all, the nxg is not my thing, so I'm really considering the Mako and the ax1. Does anyone have any thoughts on these two pads?

I think the makos look pretty sweet, if i was you I'd get the makos, the only thing I don't like about them is that they look kind of bulky.

any thoughts on the following shins?

ax1, nxg, and the makos.

cheers

I'm currently using the 2010 Projekt shin pads, but have tried on all of the above so I can give you my general impressions from trying them on.

The AX1 has a nice liner and appears to be very protective, but has more volume in the calf area than the Projekts and a wider knee. They strapping system is similar to the Projekts which I like, but the calf area isn't that tight on me in the AX1's and it's nice and snug with the Projekts.

The NXGs is an anatomical pad with less volume than both the AX1 and Makos - it's a little more streamlined. The strapping system is similar to the one Warrior uses and I like this system - it's comfortable and locks your leg in well.

The Makos were mobile and seemed well ventilated, but the top strap wasn't as convenient to use a the straps used on the NXG and Warrior shin guards - the strap would come out of the plastic loop when putting it on and then you'd have to hook it through again. Maybe I'd have better luck keeping it in the loop if I was putting them on sitting on a bench vs. standing up/kneeling down at a store. Even so, I still think I'd prefer the neoprene type top strap found on the top end Bauer and Warrior pads.

They're all quality pads. I'd just try the three on (two of each at the same time with one on each leg) and compare them based on fit and comfort for your legs. Then go with the pair that fit and feel the best to you.

I've been using the ax2 for bout two months. They r great. Only thing I don't like is the bottom. Tvey get narrow and have a funny angle so they don't fit all the way over your skate.

Have you tried Liquid Nails for small projects? I know JR swears by it for helmet repairs.
