does your league have scoring limitations?

Recommended Posts

I'm not sure if this is common or not. I have played in two different leagues and they both have scoring limitations. The current league I'm in is 16 games in length and they have this limitation:

1) no more than 3 goals per game

2) can score 16 goals. If they are scored before the 16 games are up, you can score 1 per game.

What are your leagues limitations (if any) and what are your thoughts on such limitations?

I played in a spring league with very loose scoring rules. If a player was just lighting the other team up his goals would no longer count on the score sheet.

I've never heard of scoring limits for adult leagues. For some house leagues around here they have 3 goal limits for the younger divisions.

As far as my thoughts on the limitations. I think it makes sense for younger house leagues as it teaches the kids to pass, but for adult leagues and even older kids I don't think there should be limits. If one player is dominating then they should either be moved to a higher division or the entire team should be moved up. Of course if it's the highest division available then it is what it is - in the highest most competitive division there definitely shouldn't be limits. The other team would or should key in on that guy defensively.

I also have never heard of this rule before, I find it quite odd. I understand maybe it's to keep the ringers out, but if there's a dude racking up 10 points a game, the league admin should probably handle it.

I mean, I played in a lower league a few years ago where I was averaged 7+ points a game. We went like 2-18. Didn't really make a difference, yanno?

I've seen it in rules for some places in the northern Chicago suburbs. One place that doesn't have it polices the player ability level in each league very closely.

That's usually a recipe for disaster in the leagues around here. Fortunately, our league administrator has been doing a better job of handling those situations.

When one player on a team is scoring 7-8 goals a game, is the best player on the ice by miles, he has no desire to move up a division, and the league director's job could be better filled by a chimp with a box of crayons... Rules like this would be appreciated

We have a lot of players that play in a league below their actual ability level. So maybe that's the reason for the 16 goal limitations. But, I wish the administrator would be strict on telling such players to move up a league.

If a player is significantly more skilled then they can do things like rag the puck to kill time in a close game when their team is up and of course they can just focus on being a setup man. If they're so much better that no one has a real shot at beating the team when they play then either the player should have to move up or the whole team should have to move up (unless they're already in the highest available division).

I have played in a lower level roller league where as a player you could only score three goals per game. If you scored more then that goal didn't count and you were given a penalty. They also have mercy rules in pretty much all levels (unsure of the top level) where if there is a ten goal lead the game is over.

My league struggles with players showing up who are too good. There's no fix right now other than complaining.
Our league uses pointstreak so it is very easy to see when you have players averaging 3, 4 or more points per game. They also have ringer forms that teams have to fill out after a game and have one of the refs sign off on before they turn it in.

In the two leagues I play it there's an OPEN league (competitive) and REC league (fun/laid back based).

In the Open league (players are grouped by skill level) there is no limit on how many someone can score. However if someone is scoring a lot of goals and their team is doing well, they will be moved up. There have been a few instances where a ringer has played for a team that is terrible, but hasn't moved up, but that is rare.

The Rec league has a 3 goal limit. Your 4th and any other goals is treated like an icing. The teams are based up of all skill levels.

I wish my league did that. We're moving to being USA hockey registered, so hopefully things improved..

Don't count on it. It usually just means that you have to pay a registration fee in addition to your league fees

Yeah, that's the word on the street. There was something I read about determining a player handicap, but my guess is stats never get collected and the handicaps will never be enforced.

If the same people are running the league, chances are that things won't change.

I was in a league with a two goal max but I was on defense and hit it only a couple of times. My current league allows 3 goals. I like the rule for the most part until I hit that third goal :) but in all honesty I think it makes for more competitive games

What happens if someone scores a 4th goal? Does it not count? I've also played in games dominated by 1 guy who may only score once...but has 5 assists, and plays lockdown defense for 90% of the game..

Doesn't count. It's not perfect obviously but it's better than one guy putting up 6 goals every game. At least in your scenario there's other people on the team finishing.

Cool, idea but for the guy who has the game of his life scores 5 or 6, and half dont count takes a little away from something.

Im a bit confused how this works though, so if player on team A scores 4 goals and another player scores one, team B scores 5, team A loses instead of a tie?

In my league after you get your third your notified you cannot score another. If you do it's waved off and face off comes to center ice. When I get my third I usually get pushed back to defense, and look to pass more.

Not sure if the rule exists in my c league though. I guess it's similar to home run limits in softball leagues
