But, I believe the player attacked the referee first. Granted, not professional in either case, but if refs are fair game, how can there be any order to the game?

Player should be banned, possibly charged criminally, the ref should be fired.

I do give the ref credit for removing his helmet, but you simply cannot go after a player, ever.

The player started it by knocking over the ref then standing there like he was waiting for it. I'd say he got what he deserved but he didn't get a good beating. Pretty funny, unprofessional for sure but the player should be banned from the league and the referee given a minor slap on the wrist.

OK so I actually saw the In Soviet Russia picture before I even saw this thread so I couldn't quite figure out why the ref was involved, but now it makes sense. Definitely unprofessional, but can't say the player didn't deserve a better whopping than what he received. You figure if you cheap shot a player on the opposition you would get beat, so why not when you hit the ref?? That being said the ref should at least get suspended for a few games.

Refs got a right to defend himself. Maybe that player will think twice next time before blatantly attacking a referee. I don't think the ref should be fired, or even harshly disciplined.

I have no problem with the referee's reaction. The way he just kind of casually put down his helmet was awesome. Just awesome.
