Bauer Skate Conundrum

Recommended Posts

I have used the Bauer apx skates for the past year and a half, and although I have enjoyed the performance, I have hated the fit. I got 8 EE, because I measured bigger then D and I was convinced to go wide. I do not think it was good, I had a super bad rubbing right near my inner foot on the right side. My foot was rubbing almost up against the eyelet, where there is no protection. I cut away a piece of the tongue, which helped, but caused severe lace bit. I then replaced the tongues with a pair of pro graf tongues, which helped, but still caused pain on the inside of the right foot. I play 3-5 times a week and am a former Division 1 NCAA player, so I put a lot of stress on my skates, so I really want to get the right skates.

I decided enough was enough and I would get new skates (plus 10% off came in the mail). So I was looking to answer a few questions.

1. Do you believe the hype that vapor is for quick players and supreme is for power? I am def not a quick feet kind of player, but I have always gone vapor, because I prefer the aggressive stance. I am more of a long stride player, then quick strides, so Bauer says supreme would be better for my style.

2. I tried on the nxg and really liked the feel as well, its hard to tell that its non-aggressive when just walking around the store. I have heard people have issues when going from aggressive pitch to non-aggressive pitch sometimes. The fit in both is about the same, I have about a E width and about 8.25 size foot. So I usually go 8 regular and it works pretty well.

3. I really loved the feel of the new apx 2, but I am hesitant to buy in on the same product I just disliked so much?... although they did redesign the tongue, and add padding exactly in the spot I am having an issue on the new model

If volume is your issue then the vapor might not be the right fit. I would suggest the supreme as your ankle wouldnt sit on the eyelets like you said about your vapors.

I wouldn't buy into any hype. The skate that fits your foot best is the skate that is for you, regardless of what they may or not be marketed for. Also, if you have problems with pitch, that can always get resolved with profiling/heel lifts.

Yeah thats the thing, when I try on the skate, the vapor feels better. I dont like the really narrow heel in the supreme, and the volume isnt an issue on my vapors, its just like I have a bigger bump on the inside of my foot then the usual person or something, thru the laces, I have no volume issue, pass the pencil test with flying colors.

Thats the problem, the fit seems better with the vapor, but I had issues with it before....

Would getting the sore spot of the boot punched out a bit solve your issues perhaps?

I have talked to a lot of people about this, I do not think it would work, because its so close to an eyelet...

You sound like an ideal candidate for the NXG. The D NXG is a Vapor E, and the increase in volume will help to alleviate some of the lace bite issues you're facing. I never had any issues switching from Vapors to NXGs in terms of pitch/stance, but this can always be customized via profiling/lifts.

As for the quick stride vs powerful stride debate, that is just marketing jargon from Bauer. Your stride is your stride and whichever boot between the two that fits better will help you get the most out of it.

This is what I was trying to say, if your ankle is rubbing almost on the eyelet you need somthing that lets your foot settle back and rest in the ankle pads. I think the NXG would be the best too.

If you didnt like the fit of your Vapors and you dont like the way the Supremes feel in the store, maybe you should try something else or a different brand. Possibly the Nexus could work for you, it would have more volume than the Vapor and a wider heel than the Supreme.

The new Makos have a very adjustble fit that may work for you and CCM/RBK both have nice skates that may work for you as well. The new Graf MCI series is looking to be pretty nice with options for stiffness.

Bottom line, if the Vapor didnt work and you dont like the Supreme, there are a lot of other good options out there to look at that dont say Bauer on them.

I agree on trying on other brands. Find the best fit; you'll have to live with it for a while. It's worth taking some time to do this. After you've got the best boot for you, then deal with pitch, profile, etc.

I'd try to punch that spot first and u may not need new skates. If that doesn't work try on every brand available to you before you drop $800.

If he played 2-10 years ago its difficult to comp what he was wearing then vs whats out on the market now, especially if he had customs.

Based on what he said, I've been having the exact same problem with my Vapor X7.0 skates. The people at the LHS told me that they couldn't punch it out because of where it was rubbing (right where the eyelets are). They also said punching it out weakens the integrity of the skate. True?

I put a gel pad where it was rubbing and that seemed to help after one skate. Tourney this week so hopefully it keeps working.
