Pro Grip Tape Method

Recommended Posts

How do pros use grip tape? Do they use it on top of regular tape? I notice most have regular tape at the bottom of the grips. Do they simply stop with the grip tape about an inch before the regular tape ends, or do they use regular tape on top of the grip tape to keep it from unraveling?

I've been using Renfrew grip tape on top of my "regular" knob/grip, and have found that it is MUCH less destructive on the palms of my gloves, as well as adds comfort to my grip.

Yeah. They still have the cloth tape under the grip tape, but they add the extra strip of the cloth tape on top to keep the grip tape in place.

The way I always did it was tape my normal nob with coth and the handle would be grip tape and a strip on cloth or clear to cap the bottom from rolling up. Lots of different ways to do it but that was how I liked it.

With gauze style (the one pros mostly use) grip tape I find you don't need that cloth overlap at the end since it pretty much adheres to itself pretty well.

That's what I found as well Andoy, and what caused me to wonder how/why the pros have cloth tape at the bottom of their grip. Thanks for the replies everyone.

I started off using Renfrew white tape (only) on the top of my stick and the leather on my Bauer APX palms were pilling and sticking to my grip, causing me to lose mobility when rotating my grip around the top of the stick. I decided to try "what the Pros use" and put Renfrew grip tape over my white tape and have not had any pilling or stickiness since.

Gauze-style tape should help preserve your palms, not shred them. It's much softer than regular cloth tape, and has a degree of elasticity throughout. What brand are you using?

The Renfrew stretchy grip tape is amazing for knobs, its all I use. I used to do a layer of regular cloth tape under the grip layer but have recently moved to a thin layer of grip down the stick and another thin layer back up to the top so 2 layers with nothing under. It self adheres to itself well.

Using the Renfrew gauze\stretchy stuff.... It killed palms (in just one season of coaching) that survived several years with plain old cloth tape... I just got a new set of Bauer 4 rolls and look forward to breaking them in after I recover for knee surgery..... I don't want to chew them up too fast.

I use the Renfrew grip tape and love it. I just use tape on the actual knob of the stick then cover with the grip tape. I keep rolling the tape around til about 5-6 inches down, which i over lap the tape like on the blade. Finish with a quick pass of regular of tape to keep it in place

Anyone else have this stuff (the cauze type stuff) shred their palms?

It didn't shred mine, so much as leave black sticky crap all over the top hand palm.

I stopped using it because it gets pretty gummy and nasty after a while and requires constant replacement if you want to keep it fresh. It is relatively expensive when I'm buying new tape supply every month and not a lot comes on a roll.

BTW - I'm also talking Renfrew

Did two hours worth of passing to kids last night in tryouts... That sucked with brand new gloves!. Fresh white Renfrew cloth tape and you'd think that I rubbed it with a pine tar rag... all gummy and sticky left little balls of sticky stuff on my palm... Gonna try the gauze again... put some fresh on my daughters stick and it seems ok.... maybe just remove the tape all together for a better feel, or change it more often.... Anyone ever tried tennis racket or bicycle bar tape?

When I put a new knob on I always sprinkle it with baby powder and rub it into the tape. That prevents it from getting sticky crap on your gloves.

Been doing the baby powder trick for decades and have found that it keeps the palms from getting destroyed.

I'm about to try this right now. Have had a pair of CCM 4 rolls that are a week old and wearing rapidl, willing to try anything at this point.

update: wow what a simple fix...it already feels less abrasive just with bare hands Im excited to see how it will affect my palms, thanks for the tip!

which one were you using? I had my first skate with using just regular white tape coated in baby powder and it has made a huge difference. It actually took off some of the pilling that had start the week before. I think its gunna do the trick. Nothing better than a free solution to a problem ( if you already owned baby powda)

It did make it a little less grippy but if it saves my palms then its worth it

I've said it before on MSH, but I'll say it again. If you can get the 3M grip tape (I've only ever seen it at Canadian Tire) it is the best that I've tried. blows the renfrew stuff away. Way softer, lasts longer and my bauer four rolls are two years old now and the palms are perfect.

FWIW I tape my end normally with cloth tape, shaft and knob (that's what she said), then cover it with the grip tape, then cover the bottom of the grip tape with one piece of cloth tape to keep it from rolling up.

Tacki Mac.

+1 this will save your gloves and give you the grip you want. I have been using some pre tape gauze, literellay gauze not hte sticky crap they call gauze. I believe its weightlifter tape too. I got the Idea from a couple NHL guys using it. It wears unbelievably fast, but its soft and has a good feel. I am testing ways of wrapping it to make it last more than one game. Funny that the new and used pros sticks that had it on it seemed to have good wear.

Although it is the only thing that feels better than a tacki it might not last long enough to make it worth it.
