Blade Pattern advice to replace p92

Recommended Posts

Hi

I have used sticks with the Bauer P92 blade pattern for a few years but I need to buy a couple of sticks and can only get PM9, P91A, p88 or 106 in the right stick model/price.

Can anyone advise which of those would be closest to P92.

Thanks as always.

Simon

I am replacing Total Ones and get some of last years Total One at a good price but only in those blade patterns.

My choices are:

1. Try a diff blade pattern.

2. Spend more for the current Total One equivalent which I can get in p9

Europe prices make it 250 euros for current or 150 euros for last years so quite a saving if I am prepared to change blade pattern.

The 100 euros in savings definitely justifies trying out a different pattern in my opinion. I would suggest going with the PM9 specially if the P92 sticks you were previously using were Lie 5's. I spent a lot of time trying out different patters last year (Iginla to Hedman to Kovulchuk to Staal to Kopitar/Hall) and one thing that always surprised me is that if you're a good hockey player, it only takes about 8-10 hours of ice time for you to get used to a particular blade pattern and be fully comfortable with it. And if you stick with the new pattern longer it shouldn't effect your game significantly in any way (keep in mind I'm not suggesting all patterns play the same, just that your brain/body adjusts to it). So give it some time, you might have just found your new favourite pattern.

IMO, P106 will play the closest, although none of those patterns are really similar at all. Maybe P88 for the curve, but it's a quite closed face compared to the p92.

I agree with McDugan, the P106 will offer the loft, but is more heel and a bit less depth than the P92.There will also be a bit less rocker and it will play a bit lower in lie. the P88 could be a secondary option if you don't like the heel.

I'm a P92 user myself. I came from the P88, it's not necessarily a similar pattern but it's a very easy pattern to play with since it's a mid curve and pretty basic all around pattern. You won't get exceptional loft but you'll get good puck control and backhand control. With your other options being heel curves it might take a while to adjust.

Do you at least get to use a similar flex with your new stick?

The P106 is the most similar in that it is a fairly deep curve that twists open. The P88 has much less loft but is a deep mid curve and almost as much of a rocker on the bottom. With both of those curves, the shooting motion will be pretty similar to what you use now. The wedge nature of the P91 makes it a much different blade and the PM9 is likely the hardest blade for P92 users to transition into.

Very interesting! What were your impressions and differences experienced when you tried Out all these blades?

The PM9 is absolutely amazing. It's the retail Stamkos curve and is really all-rounded and to my knowledge, other than Ovechkin and hard to find P92 Lie 5, is the only Lie 5 from Bauer currently being produced. It also won't be discontinued in the nearseeable future unless Stamkos, for some insane reason, leaves Bauer.

I usually choose curves that will last. P92, P88, and PM9 are Bauer's flagship curves. I wouldn't go with like a Kesler or Staal curve. Since you are using P92 I would probably go with P88 unless you like a lower lie.

That being said, each curve is different. P14 is a Lie 6 that feels like a Lie 7 due to the toe.

You know they'll just put someone else's name on it if he ever jumps ship, right? His actual pro curve is basically a P92 already, maybe a little deeper.

I have used the p92 or similar curves for most of the past few years. Overall, I find it easiest to go back and forth between p92 and p88 (I use my p88s just a little shorter). For shooting alone, the p106 was the easiest transition from p92, but for me, passing and stickhandling felt more natural with the p88.

^^^ I would say that's a great way of putting it.

Manufacturers phase out different models all the time and try new ways. It took the E26 how long to get to retail? They don't just pick the same curve and change names no matter what. It's already changed twice and is tweaked in between in many cases. That EXACT curve would change, even in a slight way, if Stamkos left. I'm very OCD about my curve and most people I know are. Regardless, he'll be with Bauer for life.

Obviously retail curve is different. That is pretty clear.

Printing a players name on a stick has nothing to do with a curve. The construction of the blade and how it's molded has more to do with it. It's not like the mold is labeled "Stamkos version of PM9" and was different that the "Malkin version of PM9."

Isn't the p88 and 92 the same except p92 is open?

Very similar but not quite. P88 blade is shorter, thinner toe with a slightly lower lie.

Agree with going to the P106

for me the P88 face was so closed I couldn't get used to it

I used the P106 without much trouble just adjust to more curve at the heel

P106 probably your best bet.

P91A has some similarties in the lie, you will shoot lasers with it. However, it is a difficult curve to shoot with, you need to shoot A LOT to be consistant with your shot.
