Get the irock and wax it up real nice. No cops will mess with you... if they can even catch you...

Because everyone knows how fast a stock iroc is

Kirsch, if you want a cheap car thats fairly fast and handles pretty good, you should buy a used Subaru WRX. i bet you could get one for around 4 to 8 grand used. like a 98 or 99

I have driven one. And honestly, it's not my cup of tea, but I like the way it drives more than a Vette. It just suits me a little better. I have never driven a Viper (just ridden in one). Incredible tourque. It's just not my bag.

Cars like the 911 and NSX don't have much tourque, but perform incredibly in the 5k-8k RPM range. And they are much more fun to drive than an over-tourqued Vette.

I'd get an M3 over a Vette.

I am planning on getting an M3 for my next car. It was between that and a vette, the M3 has more that I want. Gotta love the SMG baby.

Wow, we went from less than $5000 to a two page discussion on a 90k car... hmmm.

I have narrowed my list down even further

84-92 Camaro (Preferably IROC or GTA), Firebird (pref. Formula), or Trans Am

Lincoln Mark VIII

no offense to your choices here, but i thought you said you want something more reliable for the winter???.... need a reliable car for the winter...i got two of them, but they are a little out of the 4000 price range.

lego, have you driven an RX7 or RX8? because if you like joy buzzer engines, i think a rotary is your cup of tea, those things don't peak until 9000 rpm

Yes, I've driven an RX7.... I used to own one. Nice car, but I'll never buy another one.

And I've been talking about an NSX and a 911... not exactly "joy buzzer" engines.

hey, if you're going to get a performance car, drive it. driving an automatic is like just going along for a ride. six speed all the way.

It's hard to drink and shift. Drink Coke, that is.

The SMG is not an automatic gearbox. It stands for Sequential Manual Gearbox. It is a manual gearbox. It shifts in .08 seconds. It is set up like a Taptronic stick, you shift up and down. there is also a paddle shifter on the steeringwheel. You can drop it into automatic if you would like.

i know what smg is and what it does. look, we can go back and forth and spout off the performance advantages of a smg type system vs. a true manual transmission, but that's not the point at what i'm trying to get at. i'm talking about the whole driving experience. i realize this is all personal preference, but i believe that a true manual (stick shift and clutch) is just more fun. it just feels like you're more "connected" to the car. paddle shifters just makes me think i'm playing a video game, not driving. less then a second shifts aren't going to make my behind the wheel time any more exciting. it just seems boring to me.

Yea, my car has that too. Except they call it a "Sportstronic" Transmission. It's a cool feature and definitely better than a regular automatic, but it still doesnt compare to a true 5-spd because it doesnt shift quite as fast and doesnt put as much power to the wheels. Just doesnt have quite the same feeling. Whatever next sports car I own will be a manual.

Sportstronic is different. Sportstronic is run on an automatic transmition and shifts very slowly, something over a second I believe. If you have never driven in a car with SMG, it is different from sports shift, taptrontic, sportstronic, whatever you want to call it. It feels much different than any of them. Granted, it is no six speed, but it is faster.

Well as of right now it looks like I am getting a Pontiac Fiero and then later after I sell my Challenger and save up some more cash I could get something else. Who knows, maybe I will enjoy driving the Fiero.

I loved my Fiero. I had the V6 model

Yeah this is a 1986 SE with the V6

That's exactly what I had. I've actually been thinking about getting another one just for commuting to the shop. It's a 40 mile drive and my Rodeo is killing me in gas

basically, the difference is that SMG is a manual transmission with an electronically controlled clutch, shifts like a manual but all you don't need to control the clutch, a computer does it for you. all the other stuff is an automatic that takes orders from either buttons or a stick or whatnot.

Kirsch : post a picture of your new car, after 5 pages of anticipation, it's the least you could do ;)
