concussion helmet

Recommended Posts

I also recently suffered from a concussion while playing hockey. I was disheartened to replace HC100 which fit perfectly on my head, but I bought Bauer 8000 which does a better job in the protection side. Mission Carbsters are also potential good ones you could look for although I've never used them. But with Carbsters, getting your hands on them might be a little harder since they're not as readily available on stock at all.

I have a medium that doesn't fit me if anyone is interested. I may even sell my large that does fit me.

Sorry to bump this thread, I found it when I was doing a search for concussions. Tonight I really got my bell run, I got clipped and did this half flip and my head hit the ice HARD. I didn't get a concussion probably thanks to having my mouthguard, but i've still got a really bad headache.

I was using a CCM 652 helmet.

I can't help but wonder if I was using a different helmet, mabye I wouldn't be having a killer headache right now. I heard the Bauer 8000 is the most protective helmet on the market and while no helmet will stop a concussion, the 8000 will do the best job possible. Any recommendations?

Well, according to what chadd's seen, kids are getting a lot of impact concussions with 8000s, not nearly as many as you see in itechs or bauer 3/4000

I was convinced partly by a discussion with someone I respect. Personal observations and anecdotal evidence do seem to back up the theory.

Sometimes you will get your bell rung no matter what helmet you use and some people are more likely to get concussions than others.

Why would Bauer's top of the line helmet be more susceptible to concussions than say a "lower end" model like a 3000 or 4000?

Is it because the lower end models like the 4000 use the "traditional" single thick layer of very soft foam so they absorb impacts better than helmets like the 8000 or CCM 1052 that utilize that layer of extremely solid foam that feels like a brick?

A good mouthguard that is NOT chewed up really helps. Most of the MG's today are chewed up and provide no protection. I prefer the XLR8 mouthguards. They have a hard outer shell for protection, and a soft inner gell for comfort. Was the sports product of the year in 2004. Dentist own the company and designed the guard. xlr8yourgame.com

Dude! 5 concussions is a lot! Have you considered changing the way you play? You must be skating around with your head down or something. Spend the next 2 months learning to skate without ever looking down at the puck! Make sure your head is ALWAYS on a swivel. That is the key to getting no more concussions.

Some people have a more jagged inner cranium than others, so when they bump their head they are more susceptable to getting brain damage. You might be one of those. The only answer is to not get checked anymore.

no offense Bruin, but that is Eddie Van Halen in your pic, not Slash

 I was thinking that too

Back to the topic, 5 is a lot and you're young so it's probably worse to go through the rest of your life being punch drunk. Wear the mouthguard all the time and buy a new helmet, and listen to your doctor if you get another one you may have to hang up the skates.

The cheapest helmets Itech makes all have hard foam in them with just a little other padding for comfort. The HC104 and 2906 combos come with similar hard foam to the HC100 or Bauer 5k and 8k. The 2906 is $39 and the 104 is only $5 more for the combos at hockeymonkey. Those helmets are worn by kids who generally aren't old enough to play in an age group that permits checking. Especially with Itech and the fact the 95 and 100 helmets look to be virtually identical except for the padding, it makes one wonder.

I just find it interesting that the cheapest helmets they make have very similar padding to the most expensive helmets they make. The hard foam may offer better impact resistance but does far less to cushion the head during majjor impacts than the old style soft foam. I could be completely off base but it just seems logical to me based on what I've seen.

I saw them in Vegas and we're bringing some of them in. They seemed nice.

You could have a look at these:

Hefter helmets

Maybe some of the guys going to the show can check them out and give some advice. Also, the new Reebok helmets could be worth a look once thy come out.

I was just going to say that. These look like they're supposed to be good. My friend got one (his dad is Hefter) and he says that it is really comfortable.

Sorry to go off topic a little, but does anyone know much about these hefter helmets. have had a look at the website and they look very interesting. Is it the padding that make these helmets better than others? What do they fit like? How much are they? Are they currently available? Thanks ;)
