lee92 2 Report post Posted February 20, 2005 i took a bunch of choc. covered coffee beans before one game. i was wound to the roof, but all the caffeine did burn me out. it was fun while it lasted. a trainer once told me for a lot of energy to drink something like mountain dew, since it has such a high amount of sugar in it. downside is you'll feel like a bag of crap afterwards
stickler012 0 Report post Posted February 20, 2005 Since red bull doesn't sound like the best choice, whatelse can I drink without nasty effects? Or here's a better question, has anyone heard of any pros that drink anything special before a game? I'd like to know for those days when I'm tired as hell and need some quick energy. Accelerade
asdfa 0 Report post Posted February 20, 2005 redbull works to give energy, the weird thing is, whenever i drink it before games, my legs always die in the third, even though i have the energy to keep going, it's really weird.
2048 0 Report post Posted February 20, 2005 Red bull is good for keeping me up, but not much more (other than warm-ups). For some reason, when I drink it I don't get thristy throughout the game. It's really strange because it's supposed to dehydrate you, but it has almost the opposite effect on me.
lee92 2 Report post Posted February 20, 2005 i find the red bull keeps me loaded for the first period or two, but then in the third its the pasta that kicks in, so i'm loaded none stop. don't know about the dehydration part since i drink water non stop throughout the game
NCPUCK26 0 Report post Posted February 22, 2005 I live on Red Bull. Amen to that my man. When i'm away at school, I can't drink many, hard to get them, but when i'm home, I mix anything with redbull... (hah) but also thats all i drink, i just love it to keep me going all day, etc... My buddy can't take the taste of redbull but loves the rush and used to shotgun them before games or inbetween periods, hahah.
joshy207 15 Report post Posted February 22, 2005 I tried Accelerade, it wasn't bad, a little chalky though. It seemed to work OK, but I'm fat and out of shape, so it really doesn't matter what I take. Vespa seems to be good too... both are more natural and help your muscles recover more quickly. I stay away from all the caffeinated stuff.
ultraman7k 0 Report post Posted February 22, 2005 hmm i've used red bull a couple times before games (6 am games..) so it gets me awake pretty quick...before i drink i though i try to hydrate myself really well, and drink water on the bench between shifts. I haven't had any problems tiring out or anything, i just mainly drink it to shake off the effects of waking up at 4. 30 am. it does keep my wired though. Lightning 0 Report post Posted February 22, 2005 after spending all day at work, going to the gym after work, and them having a late game at say 10:30pm or 10:45. The extra kick helps the legs get moving a little quicker.

Hipster 5 Report post Posted February 22, 2005 My buddy can't take the taste of redbull but loves the rush and used to shotgun them before games or inbetween periods, hahahMust be nice to be young. After age 40, you gotta worry about tachycardia and sudden death. We had a coach in his mid forties suffer a heart attack on the way home from a men's league game last year and this year another friend about 42 had an arrythmia, and he is in fantastic condition.why would anyone need an artificial stimulant to play hockey? Why would you want to increase heart rate before you even hit the ice? I'm sure any sense of enhanced performance is just the caffeine buzz and not based on any real science. duckjob 1 Report post Posted February 23, 2005 I usually have a red bull about a half hour before my games since they are later and I almost always am coming staight from work. I stick to water during the games, anything else upsets my stomach. The only people that have died or had serious health problems resulting from red bull have been people that drank like 3 or 4 of them, or were mixing it with other stimulants. Moderation is key. Hipster 5 Report post Posted February 23, 2005 My buddy knows a guy that had like 6 red bulls and had a sezeire (spelling?) after having them. That's why I wouldn't drink one before a game. I guess a teenager doesn't fear death, but when you get to be 40 and someone you know has a heart attack and you're still playing men's league, the thought crosses your mind.I'm 40, and even though I'm in decent shape and played hockey at a fairly high level, I'm frankly afraid of having a heart attack on the ice. My Dad was in good shape when he had his first attck at age 47, so I don't think my fear is unreasonable.Even when I was 20, I can remember going so hard on the ice that my heart was just POUNDING on the bench. So I don't hold it against anyone if they want to get a cheap buzz on an over priced caffeine drink in a shiny can, but I'm not going there. The chance to play and the realization that I don't have that many years left to play competitively is all the motivation I need to skate harder. 13ToPsHeLf13 0 Report post Posted February 23, 2005 For me, anyway, Red Bull works. i usually take 1 an hr. or 2 before a game. Whenever I start to drink right before a game I get bad cramps. Like you guys said before i think it only works for some people, my friend drinks them and there is no effect. When i drink it it actually helps my shot deflection and speed. I dont know whether its the ingredients that do it or whether mentally u think that Riozanide and zycophanide must help,(so u paly better)but it works for me. forsberg91 0 Report post Posted February 27, 2005 I will NEVER drink anything like that before a game or anything with caffiene. I think that it is stupid because all it is is sugar and caffiene. You'll have a rush of hyperness and then you'll crash and be so tired.
Neo5370 132 Report post Posted February 28, 2005 I've recently found the following works(mind you, im overweight and out of shape so this helped me alot).1. Get to bed early the night before the game2. Jog the morning before3. Drink LOTS of water all day4. Eat a medium sized portion of Pasta 2-3 hours before game5. Drink 75% Gatorade / 25% Water mixture during game. You're about the only guy that has it right, though personally I like to mix 25% powerade or OJ and 75% water.I remember a while ago there as a segment on NHL Tonight or something about NHL'ers popping Sudafed before games cuz it got them hyped up. Don't remember the outcome but sounds fishy.I skated for four hours after a night of practically no sleep on water, OJ, and some red bull type energy drink. I felt pretty good. But pesonally, I like Amp cuz it tastes pretty good.
