yea its mostly the rich kids with the good gear bragging to the other kids and telling them how their skates or stick is crap compared to their equipment. but then you get a good laugh when the kids with the used equipment or low end sutff are better players anyways

Too many players now-a-days are more concerned with "status" and the "look what I got in the dressing room", than they are with just playing hockey. IMO, too much emphasis is placed on gear. I see the trends, some have to have the latest, no matter what it is. Funny, the Vapor XX is no longer "in" now that the XXX is out. It's not the gear that makes you a better hockey player. Dennis Hull had a 100 mile shot with a wood stick, 30 years ago! When will you get it, the XXX is not going to give you a better shot. Push ups, though...... But that would require work and dedication. Instead, I'll just take the easy way out and buy a stick that's going to add 30mph to my shot. Right. Not.

I watched a Bantam game last night. Funny, the only guy with a wood stick, seemed to me to have the best shot. The guys with the Orange and red synergys could barely make it to the net from the point.

I absolutely hate it when people make fun of me and call me "Rich Kid" just because I went out and got a job to buy this gear. I always just tell them to shut up and go get a job. I don't really care how mcuh the gear is. As long as it makes me play the game better, I'll make an effort to buy it.

Woo hoo! 100th post

That's the thing though, it really doesn't make you a better player. Sounds like you've bought into the companies' trap.

The one thing I never mess with is feet. I say buy the best shoes, skates, sneakers, boots, you can afford. My boy is 8 and I bought him a Vector Pro skates. As far as I go..... I have a good job, don't do drugs, have no real vices, so hey I earned it; why not buy the best I can afford?

I used to get made fun of for my equipment but now that I am a much better player no one says anything.

Yeah. All that crap that I said above used to happen to me last year. Over the summer I went to so many camps and got alot better, so no one makes fun of what I do around hockey anymore.

Most kids that age around here have a hard time breaking them in.

Why do you say that?

No, I guess it doesn't make YOU better per se, but you can definitely play better hockey with some of the better gear. For instance, when I switched from my old Bauer 1000s to my Vapor XXs (skates,) I noticed a huge improvement in my turning and agility, and it took my game up a notch, I moved up a league in the senior league I play in.

Same with the sticks... I've seen lots of posts here making fun of the Easton's pitch on the Stealths (More Speed + More Control = More Goals)... I don't really understand this. If your shots are faster and more accurate, you're pretty likely to score more goals. Sure, there are probably at least a dozen skills that are completely unrelated that are as or more important. And true, the Stealth won't necessarily make your shots that much faster or more accurate. That doesn't take away from the fact it, and all other good gear, can help your game.

If you're a good skater/shooter/stickhandler you'd be as good a skater in a pair of 652 tacks as you would be in pro tacks, and as good a shooter/stickhandler with a 5030 sherwood as you would be with a stealth.

People said i was nuts to spend more than $100 on a pair of shinguards and I keep getting flack for it except from my goalie who appreciates the fact i block a ton of shots

As long as the skates is sized properly and isn't broken down, you can pretty much skate the same

I also like wood sticks, but after about 1-2 weeks I always have to replace them, and shafts/comp blades last me forever.

What about more expensive shin pads and breezers that offer more protection? Also I think some of its mental, if you think skates are going to make you faster, maybe they will?

some pieces of equipment it's worth spending money on, but there's a point where it's excess. like I'd never wear a mylec helmet, but I'd never pay full price for an 8000 either.

personally i think that if the equipment do what is projected to, it's fine.

it has to protect, don't mind if it's cool or not.

i wear an old pair of z-air (00 series), and they fit great. i tired my brother 705, but i can't stand in them. many aorund here have 735, supreme 8000, vap XX, but i personally think that a guy that have a pair of 452 skates better that everybody... it's only personal feelings. nothing else. if your not able to paly well, you will not improve if you wear the vap xxx or vap V. the only thing it's they had to be comfortable. everything else is nothing.

i know that you will not pay attention to this things only when you became a little bit older. teens will always look at it.

i remeber when i was young an played soccer (like every italian guy...). i had a pair of 20$ adidas shoes (the cheapest), and many in my team had the new nike (130$). but i never sat in the bench at the beginning of saturday's match... (consider that there are only 2 substitutions available at that time in soccer, and on the bench they were always in 8...). think about it.

You are absolutely correct! A lot of pro's use to use 652's. The ONLY thing in skating that is important to performance is the steel touching the ice, how it is shaped and the hollow, and the proper sharpening. That's the nice thing, cheap skates can have the same steel as expensive skates. As long as the boot is comfortable, price doesn't matter. You don't get a lot of "performance" from the boot.

Isn't this an age old debate w/ no real answer???

We've all seen great players using "crappy gear" and crappy players using the latest and greatest.

Can't we all just agree to disagree and concede that a person's disposable income is his or her own business?

Especially on a board such as this where just about everyone's vice is hockey.

How owning such things might make a person act is a different story. But unless someone is a complete douche bag, leave'em alone.
