Health Insurance!?!? HELP!

Recommended Posts

Here's the poop. I applied to go to school in NYC for a 1yr. program.

I need to live in their dorms.

They won't let me unless I have health insurance.

I don't have any, never had any (except for the plan my current univ. provides), and don't know how to shop for any.

I looked online but I think it'd be easier finding jimmy hoffa.

If anyone can give me any advice, like what kind of plan I'm looking for, how much I should expect to spend, blah blah, your help would be greatly appreciated.

HUGE thanks in advance.

P.S. I did call the school about it; they do not offer a student plan and the lady was clueless.

My last resort is to call an insurance agent directly but I don't want to get fleeced (or am I wrong in thinking that as well?)

An agent is probably your best bet. They're not going to try and fleece you. Just tell them your situation and how much you can afford and they'll sort all the work out for you.

Though I'm suprised your college doesn't have a program, or at least a referral to someone else... :(

on a side note... how on earth do you play hockey with no health insurance?! I'd be in the poorhouse if I didn't have primo coverage...

Not to get too personal, but can you not use anything from your parents or are you older than 25?

No offense taken mack...............

my family does not have any sort of plan and we're not very well to do either.

I am filing my Fafsa and hopefully I can get some help there.

The only problem is that since I have to go w/ a private plan, any federal aid I might recieve wouldn't go towards it and would have to come out of pocket.

Depends on the carrier and the plan.

yeah if you're a student and your parents still count you as a dependent its normally somewhere between 23-25. Most plans will let you extend that coverage at a premium but since that isn't an option for you its not worth looking into. I have friends in similar circumstances to you and everything they found wouldn't accept them due to prior health issues and the ones that would were expensive. As expensive as it is BC/BS is pretty good coverage. Just call around the biggies and even some smaller ones and get an idea what it'll cost. Is this a master's program? Some times alumni groups will offer something too look into you're alumni association if you have one.

Yes, I've been told if I'm student/dependant I can qualify til I'm 25.

And no, it's not a master's program.

French Culinary Institute.

Yeah I like to cook so what? :D

Back to the topic, I've had no prior or current health problems so hopefully I'll qualify.

Shop around through an agent. There are some very cheap insurance coverages that you can buy for low money. They won't cover too much but at least you'll be insured.

I used to play hockey with a guy who went to Johnson and Wales. I even worked with another guy who went there but quit.
