Funny that as a shop owner you're advocating for someone to buy from a company that ONLY sells direct to the consumer....

If I wanted to make money I certainly wouldn't have opened a hockey store. I did it because I love the sport and the community. I am personally very picky about elbow pads and the STX RX series are very nice, especially for their price. If anything I always put the customer's needs before my own.

So my buddy just got his trues in. About two weeks from the date he was scanned. He got his scanning done at an lhs that had done scans since the vh days and they have outfitted the most true/vh in any shop in BC.

Anyways. I was there when he got scanned and they used a brannock and everything.

He tries his skates on and the volume is way off which was his initial issue he mentioned when he got scanned. The right skate is also way too short and even with the foam removed from that area his toes were crammed in there. So needless to say they need to be remade to accommodate the length of the right skate and the volume of both. The shop has requested additional 1/4" in the facing of eyelets 3-6.

This result has pretty much put me off to getting trues in the future, unfortunately. Even if they are willing to remake the skates until it's perfect, it's a lot of time and energy and waiting around. For me I can fit into retail skates without too much issue other than the dreaded break in period, but for my buddy, the reason he went to true was because he literally tried on every make and model with no avail.

I could argue that I have seen issues with Bauer and CCM custom skates as well. Some of these issues are due to the shop or scanning process while others might be specific to the individual such as a sensitive area or personal preference. We recently had skates built for a player who HATES his toes being close to the toe cap and likes there to be enough wiggle room for him to move his toes. Obviously, this is uncommon so I had to make sure that even after the scan was submitted I followed up with TRUE multiple times to make sure they built the skates to his liking. We got them in and he loved them. So I guess experienced will vary, like anything in life.

To put this in perspective, even cars, which are made in a very automated and controlled environment have a 1% "lemon" rate.

I've made a couple of purchases. It's like making any other cash offer.

I'd like to sell but it seems a bit confusing. I don't understand how the shipping is set.

When you list the item you specify the details of the shipping, specifically size and weight of the package. SidelineSwap then chooses the best method of shipping for you when the person buys it. They remove you from the entire process in regards to shipping.

I hope it's ok to talk about the skate holders that ships with the True Skates.

I'm getting a squeaking noise when I load up on one side (left more than the right).

I've checked the tightness of the nut, and I've tried tighter, and looser, but nothing seems to get rid of the sound and the feeling. Using my palm, I can push near the front of the blade and see that the noise is coming from moving in and out about 1 mm. Is this something that can be fixed? Or would I be looking at new holders? Otherwise the skates are fantastic, my sharpener worked his magic and everything feels great (he did recommend that before he profiled them to have the holders swapped out to Tuuks).

The only issues I have ever seen with that holder is people overtighten the nut which pulls the front "tooth" out of the socket it fits into.

Just skated on my as1s and holy cow am I in pain. I've actually never felt this kind of pain with new skates before and coming from trues it's even ruder Awakening...  Having them baked and wearing inside the house it felt fine. A bit of chaffing in the medial ankle/instep on my right foot but that was the least of my concerns after my ice session. Skating wasn't unbearable, but walking to the dressing room after. Both medial ankles bones were hurting bad. Also my pinky on my left which I had a feeling might give me issues since it was pretty snug during the bake.

I have to say though that the skates made me feel a lot more agile on the ice. They are extremely stiff and I had to loosen the too two eyelets to get proper flexion.

Looks like there's a high chance I'm going to go through with the 90 day guarantee.

While I am a big fan of the AS1 skates they did not work well for me either. The boot was too stiff and tall. I also found that the built-in arch also caused me a lot of discomfort as well. The FT1/FT2 is a much better fit for my foot type and skating style. You might want to consider changing to the FT1 if you are going to do the 90-day satisfaction guarantee.

I am trying to get my arms around this statement... Can we back up and unpack this?  Did you weigh each setup?  I'd like to see pictures to back up how much " Drastically " is.  It's not a unit of measurement I am familiar with.

As someone that has weighed every brand of steel and holder, I don't think the statement that macmoonie made is correct. When I tested the LS holder with STEP it was only a few grams lighter. The only significant weight saving over the TRUE/VH holder with STEP steel was with the LS Edge holders and LS2 steel or Byonic steel.

Ok, I haven't really seen anyone here say they've tried these blades so... I'll be the first?

Wow. Just wow. I normally just roll my eyes whenever I hear hockey marketing and about advanced technology in new gear. 10% faster this, 20% harder that, blah blah blah, etc. But I was able to confirm everything these blades were advertised to do during a skate (no game action yet).

Massive glide, tighter turns and as good or better edges or "bite" using a lesser hollow. For an experienced player and above average skater like myself, this was one piece of equipment where I feel was not just a small, incremental improvement but a next-level type of improvement to my skating. I know that might sound like hyperbole, but that's how it felt after only one 2-hour skate with them.

I'm going to have to try them back-to-back-to-back with my Steps and LS4s, but after the first time with these, I feel like I should just retire the conventional blades.

I agree with this. Although I thought the wider blade would feel different and more "stable", I really didn't notice anything while standing still. The blade didn't feel wider or any different than normal. It did feel taller though.

As someone who isn't that good in science, I can't wrap my head around how a wider blade would give you more glide... but there it was. It was massive and it was strange in a good way. Yes, I did go down to a 3/4" (The last time I used a conventional sharpening I was going with 5/8". Been using flat-bottom for 5-6 years now) but it was the flare and not the shallow hollow because I was never so smooth before

Feeling how little bite there was initially while gliding, doing basic snowplows and forward strides, I was really hesitant to do a fast tight turn. Well, I was absolutely shocked and delighted that my edges were better and cleaner than, well, ever... using a hollow that would have normally sent me sliding towards the boards on regular blades.

Finally, some truth in advertising. Anyways, that's all I got for now.

Our stores in Seattle, WA sell a lot of them and everyone who has used them, myself included, finds the benefits of these are substantial, especially if you get them profiled. You really should try going to a flatter hollow, less than 3/4" once you get adjusted. Most of the people we sharpen that have Flare are on 1" - 1 1/2" ROH, the ones with a 1 1/2" ROH usually have a ZC though.

Good idea. But the blade gets thinner and thinner after every sharpening.... plus when you get worn out toes and heels (as is almost always the case) this means the ends of the blades will be thinner than the middle... I don't see how this can work...?

You don't really skate on your toes or heel. Also, the primary benefit of Flare is not the width as most people think, its the actual flare of the steel which allows you to get over further on your edges. The width obviously does help with stability and glide, having a more flat hollow, but that's not the main focus of the benefit of the steel.

    Howdy,

Put something 4" or so long that's flat across the blade and eyeball it.  Worst case, use a quarter.

My experience is that edges have to be out a decent bit (visible by eye like the above) before it makes a difference.  But having said that, I don't have as much experience as most here.

    Mark

You can actually use a prosharp level if you have one, measure it from the left side and right side. The amount it should be off on each side should be equal. If that doesn't make sense I can snap some pics later today.

  10. Well, since I own a few stores its more difficult for me to "scratch the itch" since part of owning stores requires me to have intimate knowledge of everything we carry and sell. I personally will not sell something without trying it first, which some might think is a bit "over the top" but with so many vendors and options I would prefer to give all of my customers the best bang for their buck. It also allows me to avoid selling them something which might fail prematurely due to poor design or manufacturing.

That being said, the luster for acquiring new gear and changing gear constantly left me a couple years ago.

Currently skating on size 271 SB4 holders and thinking of getting some new skates that come with 263 SB4 holders.

Since I've already invested in some sets of 271 Tydan steel profiled the way I like it, I'm thinking of changing the 263 to 271 on the new skates.

Would that require drilling new holes or would the one size difference on the holders fit the same?

    Thanks!

Youll need to drill some new holes.

Got my Total Custom AS1 Skates - and had the worst pain in Skates I ever experienced. When investigating further I realized that I obviously shouldn’t use any of the Orthomove insoles - rather than using just the plain, standard insole as the bottom of the skate already has some „molding“.

Is this right? Are they intended to use with the plain, default (black) insole? It‘s somehow misleading as the orthomove insoles also were placed near the skates when delivered.

Did you use them WITHOUT any of the attachments?
