Got my Total Custom AS1 Skates - and had the worst pain in Skates I ever experienced. When investigating further I realized that I obviously shouldn’t use any of the Orthomove insoles - rather than using just the plain, standard insole as the bottom of the skate already has some „molding“.

Is this right? Are they intended to use with the plain, default (black) insole? It‘s somehow misleading as the orthomove insoles also were placed near the skates when delivered.

Did you use them WITHOUT any of the attachments?

I’m wondering what ProSharp quad profile would be the best starting point for myself? I’ve read a lot about the quad options and I think 0.5 would likely be the best but unfortunately it seems like the shops in the area have the 0, 1, and 2 templates but not the 0.5.

I’m 6’0”, 190 lbs, 33 years old and have been playing most of my life, typically as a winger. I’m not an amazing skater but I’m pretty decent. I just ordered some True skates and they’ll have either 272 or 280 runners depending on what “size” they make the skates as.

Thoughts on whether to start with quad 0, 1, or 2? For what it’s worth I’ve never profiled before and have always used my Bauer, Graf, or CCM steel as is from the box.

I would not alter anything until after you get the skates and try using them first. Its never good to make too many changes at once. After using them a few times you should be able to determine what works or possibly doesn't and use that to make a decision on what profile you might want to apply. We sell a lot of TRUE custom skates and some players end up liking the factory 10' profile and don't require adjustments. Some people only require a pitch adjustment, others like a single radius, 12' for example, while others end up with a triple or quad profile. I like to go and watch players skate, when possible, before making profile suggestions unless they know specifically where they feel an adjustment is needed and can convey it accurately.

Just get272s put on. It's already been stated that it can be done without compromising the boot with additional holes. If you're concerned about it, have the shop fill them with epoxy.  Or maybe even try some jb weld epoxy putty.

If you don't want holes at all then go full custom and get Bauer CCM or whoever to mount 272  holders on the boot.

As someone mentioned, for Bauer, 7.5d is still 263. Ee is 272.

CCM, however, uses 272 holders for size 7d though.

CCM uses 263 for 7D/EE and 7.5D/EE for retail and only change to 272 in size 8D/EE.

I haven't purchased skates in a long time and there are no hockey shops near me.  Recently when I was out of town for business, I was able to try on some Supreme 2S skates and vapor X800.  As I've come to find, the Vapor line fits me poorly.  But the 2S skates felt great and with good heel lock.  The shop was extremely busy, I had limited time and didn't intend to buy so I ended it there, satisfied that I fit the supreme line.  In a perfect world, the supreme skate would be a little more narrow though and slightly less ankle volume for me.  Which brings me to my questions.

    1) I really don't need the performance of the 2S, but was looking at them because I was under the impression that the Curv Composite would wrap my foot better during baking and provide a better fit and better support.  Is this the case?  If not, I'm sure I would be just as satisfied with the S29, enjoying the extra cash in my wallet.  What are the benefits of Curv?

    2) Would the S29s fit the same as the 2S?

    3) Does the tightness of the heel pads relax during baking, losing some of the heal lock?  This seemed to happen in my last pair of skates but it has been so long I can't remember for sure.  By searching, it seems that others have experienced this too.

    Thanks!

1: The S29 is a fibre composite and not Curv. They will both bake mostly similar but the Curv will obviously be stiffer.

2: The fit will be mostly the same, but with fewer foams and padding it might fit a little bigger

    3: Usually, yes.

Mine took an estimated 4 business days for build, but I think it can vary depending on season.

Every skate I've worn wears down in that similar spot.  I've said before that it would be nice if True added an abrasion patch there to account for the extra wear.  I think Nicholas G has said similar.  However, thus far, after 16 months at 2x skates per week, I've gotten little to no wear in those areas.  Knock on wood.

In the newer releases, if you chose the fabric liner, they include wear patches now. The clarino liners they still don't have them. I do know some equipment managers that have added them though and it looks pretty simple.

Jetspeeds are tighter in the hips but open up in the legs, Vapors are slim all around

I think the opposite, the CCM FT1 is slimmer than the Vapor 1X.

Consider the Jetspeed pants. It's a tighter fit all around, like slim fit jeans.

    Agreed.

280's as opposed to 272's (I'm not sure if they could go smaller or not, but my skates feel just slightly smaller than a 8.5 now)

The main issues really are that A. I specifically requested a smaller holder and they didn't do it and B. the 280 holder is so oversized for this particular boot size that it overhangs, and generally just feels weird. (Creakiness when you're walking and feeling it through the boot in a deep turn is pretty unnerving) At last on these boots, it overhangs enough in the front that I had to actively remind myself to pick my feet up higher or I'd drag the toe. Not really ideal for me. Not to mention, they don't sit flush whatsoever where they mate to the boot, including the heel cup. There's giant amounts of visible space all around the holders, which really sucks.

I'm just worried I'm going to end up with a brand new boot that has a bunch of extra holes punched in the bottom because they didn't do what they said they would, if that makes sense? Handmade or not, there's no reason these should be modded to be made to work how they should have arrived from the get-go.

I have every faith they'll make it right, just a bit of a frustrating experience. I've heard the name Rob referred to a lot on this thread (whom I have not dealt with) can someone DM me with his info? I'd love to give him a call and get his thoughts.

280 is actually fairly common on a size 8+ but obviously, everyone is different and thus what works for some won't work for others. I totally understand your frustration, and they really should have done what you asked or at least communicated back to you what they did and did not change before sending you the skates back. As for swapping to a smaller holder, I wouldn't worry too much about the holes if they are filled properly, but I do understand you getting new skates and paying a premium for such and wanting them to be done properly.

    Hey all!

Quick update from my saga of getting my Trues.

I received my second pair after providing them with what I felt was probably an overkill amount of feedback and here's what happened:

The boots came in and they felt incredible. They hit every part I asked them to, shorter boots, super close fit, nice and squeezed ankle/heel pocket.

Unfortunately, that was where everything else went downhill.

Since I was going down a relatively significant amount of boot sizing, I imagined my holder size would change too by getting smaller (which I actually preferred) and confirmed with True several times this change would occur. Sure enough, pulled my skates out of the bag, same size holder as the bigger skates, which was hanging out on the front AND back of the boot. It was obvious enough that the manager at PH was like "why the hell did they do that? Didn't you ask to go down in size?" Not only that, the leather wrap where the back meets with the tendon guard has bunched up on either side, which looks good awful. Just some really unclean lines, honestly.

True said they would ship out the right size holder and blades for PH to mount, but my concern is since it's a different size, will I end up with a bunch of extra holes drilled into my brand new skates that shouldn't have been there in the first place? Their guy essentially said who did the final assembly screwed up and put the wrong ones on, but this compounded with the leather being bunched up in places just really feels like they slapped these together and sent them out, as much as it pains me to say.

I skated on them last night, and while the boots feel amazing, the holder length is just ridiculous in comparison, especially when I was assured several times this wouldn't happen. The holders literally creaked as I walked from the dressing room to the ice. Do you think I'm being nitpicky about being upset about this? Should I push for them to make them one more time? I really want to love the skates, but this has been a real challenge to deal with as time continues on.

That being said, I'd also like to throw out there that from what I understand this is an extremely rare case for this to happen, a perfect storm, if you will. For all you people waiting to pounce on True for this: yes, they've got some issues, but if you asked if I would do this dance all over again with them, the answer is a resounding ABSOLUTELY, without hesitation. Once this is sorted, I know I'll have skates that will feel incomparable to any retail boot on the market.

    Eventually.

I'll update as the saga comes to a close.

What size holders are mounted? I skate on oversized holder myself as do many others without issues, assuming you have the steel profiled and pitched properly.

Yeah pretty much Sidelineswap (https://sidelineswap.com/search?q=true holders), has them for less than 100, sometimes dipping down to like 50$ (https://sidelineswap.com/gear/hockey/other-hockey/599644-new-step-steel-and-true-holder-size-11-296).

For a while we had almost all players swapping the True/VH holders with Tuuk LS Edge holders but the last 10 pairs we have delivered the players wanted to test the True/VH holder first and liked it and didn't want to swap it out.

Has anyone else had any recent experience with this steel? Im wondering if there has been any change to the coatings to make them more than simply cosmetic vs the coatings on Blacksteel as I like the idea of the benefits it could provide while also not having the same height

Yes, we sell a ton of it. The coating is not DLC though it does make it a bit tougher. The steel itself is very nice though.

I was using the 2016 VH skate with LS2 and step steel, prior to them merging with True. Best skates I ever purchased. These got worn out and in Dec 2018 I bought a new pair of VH skates with the True holder. I noticed these new VH skates by True are drastically heavier than previous VH skates. Is the weight difference a result of the True holder? B/c if is I’m going to switch back to the LS2. Thx

The holder and large Step steel are where the weight mostly comes from. If you change to the Tuuk with LS2 the weight will be almost the same.

I could have written that original post1    ( 280mm Tydan steel  Edge holder 1X Vapors )

Got a quad II from Tydan and had the same issues, as I leaned back and started to tighten the radius I could

feel the skates want to sorta straighten out. Talked to JR and went to a Quad O...it helped, after about 8 hours

of skating on it I'm still not completely happy.  I can tighten up the turn but a lot of ice is being chewed.....just not

clean carving around. I just got a  9/50mm/10.5 ....to soon to tell, initially though, it's better at the back for my

    style.

Planned on posting feedback after I get the next set of steel.....waiting on Tydan.

I am not a huge fan of the Quad 0 unless you are playing at a professional level of hockey. I usually recommend the Quad 0.5 as a starting point if the customer wants to go with a quad radius. When possible I like to watch the player skate before making any recommendations but obviously, that's not always an option. The Zuperior (triple radius) is another great profile that many overlook as Quad profiles seem to be "the rage" as of late. If you modify the heel of it slightly it can be an absolutely fantastic profile giving a lot of agility, speed, and stability.

I didn't notice until you said something. Is that just molded or are those... vents?

I have a friend who is using a pair of Trues for roller and he drilled small holes in the top of the boot to allow his feet to breathe better. I'll try and snag a photo next time I see him. The way he did it is not noticable at all and he claims it works wonders.
