It’s not clear from the photo, but I wonder if they’ve considered wear on the sides of the front of the skate, where most manufacturers put wear patches. The sides of the skate can take a beating in roller and I don’t see anything to mitigate that here

If you mean wear patches on the sides of the toe cap area don't think they are needed. Unlike most skates, since the True toe cap is one unit and is highly durable and oversized I don't think wear patches would be necessary.

Yes, they are. Has nothing to do with FBV sharpening - it simply is easier to use, and stays true longer (levers get loose over time.)

There's no reason to use the pitch adjustment (bottom knob.)

If sharpening goal skates, the regular Tri-Lie will work. However it does get tricky on bigger Bauer goal skates (and any old Reebok cowlings. What ends up happening is that you have to take the set screw out of the yoke, put the skate in, then put the screw in.) You can sharpen the new Bauer cowling no problem.

If you have a full machine and don't mind the additional weight and cost, the Elite Tri-Lie will be able to sharpen all of those skates named above (including player) without problem. It's the holder Blackstone developed to sharpen the OD1N skate - Bauer needed a specific method to be able to sharpen the Zero-G holder, and Blackstone redesigned their old Scissor Clamp and refined it. I have one in my store that we use exclusively for goal skates. It is a bit heavier to slide around, but it stays true all of the time.

    +1

  3. Your local store should be able to talk to the Bauer rep. Sometimes they will request a warranty exception, especially if you are around the 90-day warranty mark. Also, if you bought them with a credit card, which I assume you did, most credit card companies will double the factory warranty period. For example, had someone buy a pair of CCM FT1 skates, at day 120 they had a catastrophic failure and CCM would not warranty it. They contacted AMEX and AMEX issued them a credit on their account to replace the skates under warranty.

The only shops I know of are in the SnoKing rinks and in Play it Again Sports. Would love to know if there is a better place to get gear in Western Washington.

I own the shops in the Sno-King rinks (Renton and Kirkland) and in Everett..... we will also be opening a store in Northgate soon.

I haven’t had any issues with Edge holders in 5 years. We really need to relax with the “one bad experience = everyone must have had a bad experience” mentality on this board.

It leads to a lot of bad information.

I've never had an issue with them, I just dislike that the LS Edge holders have a lot of flex compared to SB, XS and True/VH holders.

Krejci (who's pictured) has been in Vapors for years, and those particular ones for a few months. So I'm guessing it's not an issue.

Surprised no one pointed out what looks like a new toe cap... Or how the design is similar to the old X:60.

Skate looks more like a Mako than ever and supposedly fits more like a Mako as well. If all of this is true I will be happy that Bauer is finally incorporating some of the technology from the Easton acquisition. The new Vapor sticks have some of the Easton tech in them too which is nice.

A lot of what goes on here is not exclusive to True, like fit issues, and would probably be best served in another thread where it get the attention it deserves. The problem with this thread is to polarizing so some just stay away.

This thread had some merit back when things transitioned from VH to True. Now with True and the process being fairly mainstream the need really isn't there. There isn't a separate thread for others, so why True....

Maybe it's time we close this thread then?

  8. My favorite thing I have heard recently was not said by a customer, but by a worker at a store....

A customer was buying CCM AS1 skates and the worker told him it was best to come in and get the skates baked right before he got on the ice so they would be warm and flexible. I tried to not say anything until after the customer left and then explained to the worker exactly why you would never want to do what he suggested.

  9. Is this a topic on VH/true skates or how to properly fit a player for skates.....? At this point, it seems everyone comes in here to rant which is getting a bit tiresome. I am not sure I agree that all of these individual topics should be lumped into this single thread, maybe they should have standalone threads? Anyway, just thinking aloud.

I was playing in a fairly large men's tourney a few weeks back, and stupid me didn't think to throw a couple extra sticks in the back of my truck just to be safe. Because hey, I dont break a ton of sticks.

First game mid-way through, guy takes a whicked wrister that broke my trusty QRL in the lower hosel. Switch to my backup for the day, a True a6.0 SBP. That succumbed to a guy stepping on the blade during a puck battle along the boards.

A teammate hands me a loaner. It's a CCM Ribcore. I play 2 more games with it (and thankfully it stayed in one piece). When I returned it, I told him how much I liked it. Turns out it was the Pro3.

The stick was absolutely fantastic. I kind of would like to think I know my sticks in terms of price points, and I had no idea that it was a 149.99 stick. Blade is nice and stiff. Good puck feel. Shots felt crisp. Not sure what it weighs in at, but it's got great balance. CCM nailed it with this stick.

Yeah, I am a big fan of the new Ribcor stuff for this year. I think CCM has really dialed in the stick. I haven't had a Ribcor feel this nice since the 40K.

  11. For those that say "CCM or Bauer custom skates don't have fit issues" I wanted to share an email from one of my customers from this morning. I obviously removed any information relating to him and the shop he purchased the skates from as it was not through us. I felt with everyone focusing so heavily on True, and a lot of this focus is very negative, it should be noted that many of the issues customers have may be related to the shops doing the scanning/fitting. This is the second pair he has had made.......

This is XXX with the custom CCM skates that we’re giving me the foot trouble.

First off, I wanted to say thanks again for taking the time to punch the left boot for me the other day, it definitely helped a bit.  Unfortunately, I spent a few hours reffing games in XXX last night and that skate is really bugging me and specifically my left pinky toe.

I think I’m to the point now that I’ve given up on my CCMs.  I don’t really know what else I or anyone else can do.  I feel like XXX did what they could, but there’s no point in contacting them again.

What I wanted to ask you, is a couple things.  First, if there’s something you think can be done if you reach out to your CCM rep, that would be good to know.  The only thing about that is if I have to send skates away for another 5 weeks (a total of about 3 months of getting this issue resolved), that would be lame. But I’m open to it if you have an idea.

The second question is about buying a pair of True skates from you.  I think what I’m going to do is skate on these SuperTacks for the rest of the weekend, as I have a lot of games to ref, but I’m going to put them up for sale on SidelineSwap if they don’t get better.  That being said, I’ll never get what I paid for them (which is also lame).

    Extremely hard. None at all.

We did have a thread on it:

Thank you for sharing. Very interesting. Might have to get some steel coated and try this out. I found someone who does PVD coatings but the cost is high and turnaround time is very long. I would have to do big batches of steel in order for it to be profitable and make sense.

So I have the potential to pick up some CCM QLTs on a Boxing Day special.

I’m typically a Vapor user, as I like tapered gloves, but haven’t been happy with their latest offerings.

I usually go IW to view the hertigate on gloves. When I view older histories (wayback machine) I see some conflicting informations. It says the QLTS were based on the old KFS. At another point, it says they were based on The CL500, which I hated, and the newer Tacks information says they were based on the 500s.

So in the end, I guess I’m asking are the QLTs true tapered, or was there just some past bad I go on their fits?

The QLT is quite form fitting and tapered. I would say they are very comparable to the Vapors or STX Surgeon gloves.

There's tonnes of hype over low kick sticks especially by warrior, but I've noticed majority of NHL players use a mid kick and or variable/custom kick point. Even the vast majority of the warrior pro stocks are hd1s dressed as coverts.

Is this low kick thing more of a retail thing just like how they try to make people thing lighter is better when NHL players rarely ever use retail spec skates and sticks?

I find low kick sticks, especially warrior ones not very versatile.  Great for snappers yes, but my slappers really suffer.. especially when I try to lean in hard. Almost have to do a 75% power slapper with really low kick sticks to get a decent slapshot off.

I would say its pretty mixed but players are seeming to gravitate slowly to more of a variable kick point sticks such as the True SBP/XC, Jet Speed, and Nexus.

Does this tech make the edge feel sharper for longer after a sharpening?  Obviously the steel isn’t coated, so it won’t actually retain the edge any longer than other uncoated steel. But will the increased bite in typical turns and skating keep that sharp feeling longer like coated steel does?

Flare can do DLC coating on the steel, they did this specifically for Andrew Cogliano before. If there was enough demand for it they would consider making it a standard offering instead of a custom order.
