I don’t know if Bauer do a full custom in the sense of a tailor made suit, but they do fit the length and width of each foot independently with length adjusted in 1/4 size steps, and then use heat and pressure to mould each skate to a custom machined last. My Bauer customs fit like gloves, and a friend’s Bauer custom goalie skates also fit perfectly. I know another person who will pick up his Bauer customs when he returns from working in Russia, and I’ll ask him what he thinks. The only issue I had was that they are better with the standard insoles rather than the Speedplates, possibly because the latter are a bit thicker. I suspect I would be happy with CCM or True, but Bauer custom was realistically my only option, the True dealer being a five hour drive away compared to 35 minutes for the Bauer LHS. As far as I know CCM custom are not available in the U.K.

Bauer will also do a full custom, but it costs more than retail custom. Just like CCM full custom, you fill out the specs on a spreadsheet and can change things like facing length, stiffness ratings, and more.

    Got it. Thank you.

I wonder when Bauer will start doing that with goal skates and/or when CCM will start making cowlingless goal skates. At this point I'm stuck with True (which I'm okay with... )

True definitely seem to be even more popular with NHL goalies than they are with skaters. Last I saw its still a pretty significant % of them wearing True.

CCM will have a new Jet Speed goal skate in April without a cowling.

I’m not having fun anymore. I don’t know where to go from here. I can’t even explain how I feel. Every game just feels like “why bother?”

Aside from the obvious “just quit” answer, what the hell do I do?

I also go through phases like this and force myself to keep skating. I just consider it a type of funk that I end up going through. I have terrible anxiety and also have mood instability as well, so I assume this is what is part of the problem and not hockey itself. I should also note, I sometimes get this way with other things too. So I know its not specifically related to hockey and hockey only.

My girlfriend dropped off new skates I bought last weekend to be profiled. I told her to ask for a "9' radius, +1 forward"... Which is what I have been skating on since I got my old skates way back in '07.

She texted me after and said they kept asking her: "Are you sure that's what he wants...that is like 25 year old technology"

I replaced the steel a couple years ago and at that time, no one suggested that it was obsolete or old to do a profile of that nature.

I skated on them last week, stock off the shelf with no profile and I felt like I was skating for the first time in years. I just want these new ones to feel like my old ones did.

There is nothing wrong with that setup you requested. If it works for you, why change it? I only recommend to players changing their profile if there is something that isn't working for them or they want to alter, change, or improve. Example, I recently had a player who bought new True skates and requested his usual 11' radius. He kept catching the toe on crossovers and crossunders. He also felt like the skate was too neutral so we moved him to a combination radius with a forward pitch and also shaved the toe for him as well matching it as close to his old skate blade as possible. He loves the new setup.

Google review quote "Skateworks got me fitted with a pair of 3d scanned True. The fit was perfect but the blades felt awkward. Corey and Nick helped identify the problem which for me was “too much steel on the toe” and a larger stock blade radius. The quad-2 shape they suggested is perfect. Local experts help make your skates fit and work right. Thanks /Karl"

@Nicholas G is only referring to one form of "custom" skates where they make a 3D print of your foot and bake a pair of Tacks.  There is a fully custom option (http://www.jerryshockey.com/ccm-3d-fit-scanner-custom-skates , https://www.sportsetc.net/news/hockey-equipment/new-ccm-3d-hockey-skate-scanner , http://www.paynesportssales.com/customskates/ )for CCM as well where you can do different quarters, tongues, liners, ankle foams ect.

CCM custom mould option is also 10% more expensive than True.  Both CCM and Bauer full customs are 35% more expensive than True.

(Based on $CAD pricing at Pro Hockey Life).

Correct, I was only referring to the typical custom process because I was trying to keep pricing as close as possible between CCM, Bauer and True skates. Of course, you can go full custom, but the price then changes dramatically between True and the other brands. Like I said, going custom, regardless of which brand you choose, is going to be better than grabbing a retail skate off the shelf. As long as you pick a skate that matches you skating style you should be fine. Personally, the CCM scanner recommended the AS1 for my foot, which I know for a fact is wrong, and also put me in a size 8D. I wear a 7.25 EE in a Vapor or Jet Speed and the same in True, if you go by measurements. Just for giggles I let CCM build the AS1 as the scan recommended and I found the skate was overall too long and stiff for my skating style. So I think the shop doing the fitting needs to provide some input into what fits and will work best for the player regardless of the brand of custom skate you select. The pair of FT1 skates I had made custom fit like a glove and have been very nice. I will soon have a pair of the Vapor 2x Pro skates when they release and will be able to compare all of the different brands. As it stands right now, I use my true skates more than any other pair I own as they are more comfortable and I get much better edge control with them based on the position they place your foot in.

Just like suits that are made to measure etc. I've never had one that I didn't have to alter after receiving it. That's why you do test fits.  And like you said everyone's perception of what is a perfect fit for them is different, just like clothing. Some like things to fit looser and others snugger.

There will always be the one off disaster unfortunately.

I dunno about the suit thing, when I get a suit done at a professional tailor I never need to alter it unless I put on a few lbs 😉

I had a pair of VH skates via the tracing process.  Now that both companies scan, how is the process between the CCM vs. The True?  Is one more accurate than the other?  I was very happy with my VH but I've heard/read that there has been more issues with the True.  Is the CCM process any better?  Is the CCM Full custom actually full custom?

They both use the same software to scan.

CCM basically takes a scan and prints a copy of your foot and matches it to a retail skate boot and then does a high-pressure mold of the skate around a copy of your foot.

True takes the scan and builds the skate from the inside out, around the foot last.

Which is better, I think they are both excellent compared to buying any traditional skate off the retail shelf. The best skate is the one that matches your skating style while also proving a good fit. We get many people who come in and ask us whats better, CCM, Bauer or True for custom skates and I always have the same answer, it's whatever you prefer.

The profiling machine can profile 4 blades at a time. But the main advantage is the reference point....  Other system use the bottom portion of the blade as the reference point. Therefore, if the two blades don't have the same "original shape", the machine will not grind the same amount of steel on both blades. If you are to remove the blades from the skate holder, you should notice a slight difference from 1 blade to the other. The Elite profiling machine will hold the blades in the exact same reference point as if they were in the original holder. Which means, unlike other profiling systems, the 4 blades will be identical. So in terms of advantages, the machine is faster, more precise and easy to use.

What is the MSRP of each machine? The profiling one and the sharpening?

Have any folks skated in both of these?  If so, any thoughts on the comparison?  I've tried on the x800 & 1x, but haven't tried out the x900 yet (but, based on price, stiffness, and personal preferences, I'm guessing the 900 would be my pick of the Vapor line).  I haven't been able to try on the 70k's yet, but I found the 68k pretty comfortable.  Curious if anyone can speak to differences in performance, etc.  Many thanks.

They are both entirely different skates geared towards totally different player types and foot types.

Ours was modeled after a small hand axe we had and feels really good / light weight. We shall see how it holds up!!

The next revision might have a slightly longer tenon - but we were limited size of the printing tray

Very cool. I am down to help out with design and printing as well. I have access to a ton of materials, software, and tooling. Always happy to try and create new things.

Are you looking for the small knob or the Axe handle? I will ask my buddy with the printer to get them uploaded to thingiverse or send me the files to pass along.

Small knob. The handle style was already built by Torch. Maybe you can scan their design and make some improvements to their design. I have always liked their product but its HEAVY!

If you remove the rubber cover its much lighter, but I think it can be improved upon.

TLDR: Teammate 3d printed a handle for me, it is sweet.

I have always used a wooden extension in my stick, for the last couple years as I have become a better skater I have been slowly cutting the extension down. The sweet spot for me seems to be only about a 1/2in extra onto the stick so I build up a knob using half width tape.

Cutting down a full 6inch wood extension seems like a waste and adding some extra weight - asked a teammate with a 3d printer "hey can you make this"

It came out awesome - I just need to lightly sand down the edges to save the palms of my glove and then toss 1 wrap of tape around it.

(sorry for the link, could not figure out where to upload here)

Would you be willing to share the 3D STL file so I can print one of these as well?

Makes zero sense. No offense.  But Blademaster and Blackstone have been working on things in the background for a while. Buying a company like spark makes no sense because all you get is the followers and email addresses because neither would use the tech.  Both already have similar that just needs to be scaled down. Someone soon will come up with one that will blow it out of the water.

You get the customers, mindshare, and the subscription service which is where the actual money is made. I doubt they make much of anything in the manufacturing and distribution of their machines.

Sorry but I have been dealing with them long enough to know there is more going on here. As much as Rob took responsibility I think it's a scan plus shop information issue and always has been. I have never had these many issues in 900 plus fits. The only one was a self induced issue.  Not a factory one. All others have been solved on 2nd fits.

Have to agree with this as well. We have done plenty of fittings and also have never had this significant of a problem.

  15. I have had all three. The 9K is pretty much the standard for all girdles but is a little bulkier and heavier than the others. Super Tacks is amazing, very adjustable and protective. The Tackla is very nice but not as durable as the others. The mesh seems to wear pretty quickly and I had to reinforce some areas on mine to prevent it from tearing.

Have you considered the Warrior QRE Girdle? Ive been using that and love it.
