More observations...cuz there ain't nothin' else to do... So...I am practicing with an 82 flex cut to come up to the same place it would with skates, so...it's probably like a 105 at this point. I'm sure that's not helping anything with my 165lb frame🤣 Rolling my hands more deliberately...is definitely helping...so is keeping my top hand farther out, so...thanks for that! Sure hope my stickhandling practice translates to the ice cuz...I'm actually getting good at it! This needs to end...I gotta skate! Ok...I'll be patient. We got enough dumba**es out there...don't want to contribute to that. If I owned a rink...I know where I'd be everyday! Stay frosty boys and girls🥶

I hear you. Let me be more clear...slap shots I've always seemed to be able to put anywhere. Low and hard boomers are not a problem. I've just always scored up high, and my coaches encouraged it as I was successful. Wristers...that's where I struggle to stay low with harder shots.
-
Awesome input...thank you!
-
Appreciate the response. I've been out there shooting quite a bit, and I am working on the technique including rolling my wrists. It occurred to me this afternoon that I may be standing too upright. The mechanics are harder to emulate off-ice than many realize. Every nuance is very different. I'm pretty determined, and I'm grateful for your input.

I can try one for rec. wherein I gotta keep it low or hurt someone...use the P92 for my upper league games. I wonder if that'll screw up all the stuff that is second nature with the 92? Only one way to find out I guess 🤣

Single Favorite Piece of Equipment Ever
Jbear replied to beerleaguecaptain's topic in Ice Hockey Equipment
My first pro gear...'77 Super Tacks...Cooper LIP Islanders gloves and Cooper pro pants (also Isles). Still have the pants and my second pair of LIP gloves...they're retired. Have to include Koho 221 Custom Pro...my stick until they stopped making them the old way. The last incarnation of the 221 had so much fiberglass...I felt like shooting with a piece of boat. Totally dig my new gear though...one of my old skates weighs more than both of my 2XPro's or AS1's! -
Hey All...working on wristers...low and hard. Seems no matter where I release, how far forward or back I bring it in the windup, how much I roll my hands, how deep I bend on the forward follow-through...my shot wants to stay a minimum of a foot off the ice...errrr...garage floor. If I ease way up off the gas...I have a little better time of it, but...not gonna score on those. Every once and awhile...I get a nice low hard one, but I can't put my finger on how. Any thoughts? I'm using a P92, and I am hoping that a P88 is not the answer cuz I love that P92/29/ W03 for everything else! Interesting enough...boomers...those I can put wherever I want fairly consistently. I'm teaching remotely, so...I have a lot of practice time 🤬😎
-
Gonna try the SISU and the 3D...got em both for about $20 total. I'll give my thoughts...when can actually skate again!
-
I'll check it out. One of my teammates suggested the Shock Doctor Nano3D...anyone skating with that one?
-
So...with all of this off-ice time on my hands, I am practicing a lot in the garage. Got a reg. size goal, shooter-tutor, mats, tiles...yada yada. Mostly working on stickhandling, but...have been shooting more. I'm a D-man, and I am really trying to work on low and hard. I college, I made "my living" on top-shelf boomers and wristers from the point. Can hit those with my eyes closed...always been my strength. Anyway...playing in a few leagues now. Some are pretty high-level, so I can shoot "my style," but some are rec. and I surely don't want to hurt anyone, so...working low. Long story short (too late...right?)...practicing slappers on concrete is waaaaay different than on ice. The shock goes right up through my body to my teeth! I am looking for a mouth/bite guard. Normally, I'd just grab one a go. Ain't nothin' normal about our current situation, so...since we all have time...tell me about your favorite mouth/bite guard. If you feel like it. Hope everyone is staying sane! I cannot WAIT...t' SKATE!

Hey All, Been playing forever (seems) and now I seem to have a lot of time on my hands😠. Historically, I'm a defenceman, and in college it was all about top-shelf wristers and boomers for me. That's where I scored...consistently. Now I'm playing in several leagues. Some are fairly intense and I can still shoot "my style." Some are more "rec-level" and the last thing I want to do is hurt somebody! I am trying to use this downtime we all seem to have to strengthen my weaker areas...for me...stickhandling, low corners, and 5 hole! Stickhandling...I got that...a lot of..uhhh...stickhandling practice. That one is a pretty straight return...I'm doing it a lot...it's getting better. On the other hand...I have a mat...a net...and a backstop in the garage. The net has a tarp on the front...cutouts for the corners and 5-hole. I can hit corners high all day with my eyes closed. I cannot consistently keep pucks low, and I can't hit the 5 for money! I'm all around it...inches...It's driving me nuts. I'm trying to follow through as close to the ice (ground) as possible, rolling my hands, transferring weight, back foot, front foot, being mindful of mechanics...I am getting better over the past few days keeping them low-er...but zero accuracy. Any suggestions short of asking my teammates to watch what I am doing and coach me...cuz that's gonna be a while it seems. Thanks folks!

I'll probably cut the bicep "protectors" off the 94 caps and put the S1's back on...they are very comfortable and actually offer protection!
-
Sewed the caps from my Cooper SB94L's on my Supreme S1's...perfect! How do you post images here...I'll show 'em to ya. Now all I gotta do is wait for the world to de-crazy🤣 Frankenpads Frankenpads 2 Frankenpads 3
-
I use AS2Pro's, which I understand have very stiff blades (comparatively). I find the feel (passing and receiving), shot power, and accuracy to be the best of anything I've tried. It seems to be different for everyone depending upon your mechanics. That's just what does it for me.
-
If these RBK Kinetics don't do it...I may go the Frankenpad route too!
-
Well...for the last five years before the hip replacement, I couldn't walk. That's a great way to get fat! Actually, I couldn't do anything...stand, sleep...nothing. I just took pain meds to keep going but that only made it bearable. My wife finally made me see a surgeon (doctor-phobic). When he said that I'd be able to skate again...I never imagined that I'd get back to this level! Anyway...it's a gift to be back. I'm skating 6 days a week between playing and practicing (I was anyway until the world went nutz). Now...when I'm not at school...I just train and skate, so...yup...25lbs🏒🥅🇨🇦👍😎
-
One thing I might try (if none of this works out) is to grab a pair of jr. pads at Play it Again, cut the caps off and attach them to my cap-less Supreme S1s. Problem with playing hockey for so many years...ya get mighty particular🤣
-
True...that's a thought...I'd have to order and return though. Nobody here has anything but Bauer and CCM.
-
The 9080 might be...the caps on the ones below that have a different design and sit higher. These Reebok Hybrid Kinetic fit pads look like they have the same cap design as the Tacks. For $30...worth a try.
-
Actually...no...no gut. I dropped 25 lbs after my surgery 👍😎 I'm in better shape than I was in college...cuz I don't party anymore 🤣 I don't know why it sits that way. Maybe I'd get used to it, but then there's still the bicep guard issue and the big caps. I tried the AS1 and it sat well and wasn't bulky...I was just hoping for a non-$200 option.
-
If I was 3" taller...I wouldn't have this problem...then again...I'd have to give up my awesome low center of gravity🤣
-
Believe it or not...trying on CCMs...the FT1s were blockier than rmthe AS1s. Seems counterintuitive, but I had them on. Could also be different for different body types. I have a short torso.
-
Nope. All I can tell you is that the way it sits...the front rides way up.
-
Okay...never wore them all through college; maybe just like..Cooper SB96 or something like that. No real protection...I know...stupid, but what 17-18 yo isn't. Fast forward a gazillion years...I am back in the game after 15 yrs off thanks to a double hip replacement, and happy to say...at a pretty high level. That means there are guys who can bring it. I went back to my old no-shoulder-pad-ways...awesome. Then I took one on the delt. couldn't lift my arm for two days...ouch. Ok...I give...I'll wear 'em. My dilemma...at 5'9"/167/33w/40"chest....every pair makes me look like a block and the caps are annoyingly large. Tried or tried on...Supreme S1, Jetspeed FT1, other Jetspeeds, STX RX3...same issue with all. Closest was the RX3 but the neck was so high it was choking me plus the bicep guards only cover the side of your arm...not the bicep...it's going back (nice 14 day tryout policy). I found that the AS1's ironically are the smallest profile...so, I found a pair of Reebok Kinetic Fit Hybrid (padded shirt/shoulder pads) on Sidelineswap. They seem very similar to the AS1's and only $30! If they don't work...I guess it's $200 for some AS1's. If anyone has tried these hybrids...I'd love to hear about 'em. Anyway...you guys were right...being out there with a bunch of college players and ex-junior and ECHL guys without SP's is just dumb. I used to be dumb...now...not so much. I didn't come all this way back to take one to the sternum or spine or dislocate a shoulder!

I've got P90 pro stock AS2Pro's and P29's...identical. Can't comment on P90T.
