VH Footwear/TRUE by Scott Van Horne
AfftonDad replied to dsjunior1388's topic in Ice Hockey Equipment
I just emailed VH. They said after June 30th you'll only have the choice of the standard holder OR no holder. So I guess EVERYTHING won't remain the same. That's too bad. Unfortunately, I trust (perhaps erroneously) the 16 year old at the LHS to mount my holder correctly less than VH. -

Yeah, I didn't necessarily mean that I could see anything significantly different, I just knew that it wasn't EXACTLY the same as what was shown by shoeshine boy above (because I could see some True branding on the toe). Does True already pay NHL licensing? If so, I would expect the stripe (formerly logo) area on the side would change. I notice it was conspicuously absent from the picture on Facebook. I could care less how they look cosmetically (as long as they aren't ridiculous looking) as long as they are functionally equivalent. -

Just saw that after June 30th all skates ordered will be the new "True" version (more than just the tendon guard). I hope that the transition to that doesn't mess up the great product that they currently have. I haven't "used up" my current pair but I'm worried that I won't get the same thing if I wait until after June 30th. On the other hand, if it's just as good or better, I'd prefer to wait. Edit: I just checked the VH Footwear facebook page. They assure everything is going to stay the same. I hope that includes that you get to pick your holder. -
I found something (I think it was in a shopvac accessory kit) that fit the port perfectly on one side but stepped up to something larger than the PVC on the other side. So I just tightly wound duct tape around the PVC end until there was enough to form a friction fit with the stepup piece. Kind of kludgy but it works.

The stick companies (at least Bauer anyway) are very good at controlling the stock of their sticks. By the time they are allowed to be put on clearance, all that is left is the curves that practically no one wants in the 110 flex (not what I want). I don't want to play with a stick that is not the curve I want or is 110 flex.

Don't know but as an ABHS user I was intrigued enough to order one (almost). I put one in my cart ($120 not that different than the $90 + $10 S&H for an ABHS stick) but then I saw $9 in tax added, $30 in shipping added and four weeks delivery time. I bailed out. If it turns out to be A LOT better than ABHS I would probably still get it, but with it being unknown to me, I'll stick with what I'm using.

I made the mistake of going to a lot of trouble once to make a stick shaped box. When I dropped it off (don't recall if it was UPS or FedEx) they told me that the stick shaped box cost me (considerably) more because it caused them to add an irregular shape fee. They told me I should have just taken a rectangular piece of scrap cardboard, fold it over to make an envelope sort of thing seal the edges and ends and give it to them that way (I would probably still use a little bubble wrap though).

I observed the same thing when I got mine a couple of years ago. I asked Scott Van Horne about it and he said yeah, that's typical and you can either go to a shallower hollow or a longer profile radius. He said that most of the Winnipeg jets on them felt the same thing and made similar adjustments to their hollow or profile. -
It's way more than doubled. The sparks on the X-01 are virtually non-existent whereas on the full size blademaster they are like a large solid plume of sparks. I have seen that older/cheaper blades can make more sparks but these weren't older/cheaper blades. Could it be due to the fact that the blademaster had a pink wheel on it and my x-01 has a ruby wheel on it?
-
I've only ever sharpened on an X-01 until this past weekend. In a pinch a teammate asked me to sharpen his skates on a full size Blademaster at the rink before a game. We have all seen the sparks that fly on the B-roll footage they use in between periods of NHL games and the sparks that fly on the machines in an LHS. I have always wondered why my X-01 produces so much less sparks than the full size machines (it's not even in the same ballpark). Does anyone have a good explanation of why this is so?

Hope your son isn't still a little guy. If he is, it might be a problem getting him in and out of them. But since you tried some at a store I imagine you already now about the extra work required to get them on/off. -
I also made this. The association my son plays for (he just had his last year there last season) saw my scoreboard and asked me if I could modify one to be an interval timer. I accepted their challenge and came up with what you see below. You can set a total period time and then set an interval time. Each time the interval time elapses a very loud piezo alarm will sound and the next interval will start. When the period elapses a different sounding alarm will sound. The association will use it for their USA Hockey ADM U8 cross-ice games. In these games, they typically have three under age 8 cross-ice games going on at the same time. They will for example, set the period time to 18 minutes and the interval time to 1:30. Every 1:30 the alarm will go off and all six teams will change lines at the same time. The timer can display time in "Period Time Remaining", "Interval Time Remaining" or it can be put into a mode which alternates between Interval and Period time remaining every few seconds.

Thanks. Yeah we didn't used to keep score much either. Well actually we kept score, just in our heads and everyone had to constantly say "whats the score". Now everyone misses having it when I'm not there. There are five of them in St. Louis (four other guys asked me to make them for them). And they each use them in the pickup games they play in, so there are several pickup games in St. Louis that they are at. We used to try to keep score with the rink's scoreboard but no one would consistently want to get up and walk to the scorekeepers box (and some rinks you can't get to the scorekeepers box). They have become so used to keeping score now that if I'm not there, they'll resort to keeping score with stacks of pucks on the boards.

I have made about four or five of them now for various people. Each time the design gets updated a little. It's much smaller and lighter now and has a suction cup to stick it to the glass.

Man... you guys handled that whole female/male thing with a lot more decorum than I would have expected. -

I'm with you Alan... I came from Makos and wanted to keep the extreme forward pitch on my VHs so I had CXN holders put on them. With the demise of the Mako/CXN, I asked VH what shim I would need on my next pair to emulate the CXN holder. They replied that they use a 1/8" (3.125mm) shim to emulate CXN holders . So on my next pair, I'll get them that way. -

I think it is probably more than 30 out skaters by now. Just from skimming this thread I came up with this list... https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B2A94zJKeEY5bDJHZVNmMVZtTkE/view?usp=sharing I would think there are probably ones that haven't been posted to this thread. If anyone has additions or deletions, let me know and I'll add/remove them. -

I wonder if they have passed up Graf yet in number of NHLers wearing them. The big boys (Bauer and CCM) are surely hearing some footsteps coming up behind them. I wonder if we'll start seeing them adopt some of the design features of VH? -
I don't know. I've had them in and out on several different sets of holders including these several times (I frequently "rotate" mine and my son's runners left to right). And in fact one of the two skates I could get off without any problem. It looks like the tool might have gotten a little rounded off. The guy at Total Hockey gave me two that he had off of a warranty pair AND he gave me the tools with that pair as well. So I'm back in business. I put them back on without locktite this time though.

I figured if I said "not a fan of the Robertson fasteners they put on them" not many people would know what I was talking about.
-
I just had to drill out my stripped out CXN runner bolts. I'm really not a fan of those square hole fasteners they put on them. Does anyone happen to know the size of the bolts so I can get something else?

I don't get that. Wouldn't you be able to figure out at practice whether or not you like them? -

One thing I might caution on... My son is 14 and just started wearing the same size as me (9.5 in Makos). For kicks I had him try to put my VHs on. He was unable to get past the indentation in the side that the skates have. These things are not easy to put on and unless you have a pretty determined kid, you might have a hard time getting him to persevere long enough to learn how to get them on.
