Marking or Engraving Sticks/shafts

Do you mark your stick in anyway to show it is yours?

People sell sticks all the time but I was wondering if people put their name or some markings on their sticks to show it is yours. I mean its like over 100 dollars us for a OPS.

Just in case it gets stolen.

Well everyone puts the tape on the stick with an unique style or atleast different lenghts and colours, so its not hard to recognize your stick between the others.

I personall have a #11 on the white tape on the end of the shaft, so i see its mine

Sorry Zak.

I meant as a way of identification in case your stick was stolen and you wanted to recover it ....

It's really surprising to me how many players don't mark their sticks (or skates for that matter). I've seen a few pairs of skates get "stolen" because someone picks up the wrong pair after getting them sharpened. And obviously, expensive sticks get lifted all the time. How hard is it to write a name, jersey number, phone number, or something on your stuff?

For those of you who mark your stick, is there a method you've found that works best?

A youth organization has talked to us about ordering for their entire group, and they asked if we could look into marking the sticks, since all the sticks would look the same. I've done a bit of research online, but I can see problems with many of the methods.

It appears etching is a two-step process, where the name is chemically imposed upon one piece and then transferred onto the stick. I admit I could be misunderstanding the process, but if I'm correct, that's too difficult given the numbers involved.

Engraving could work, although it would require a stencil to look good, but I'm concerned the thin veneer of plastic on "grip" sticks might melt from the engraving gun, causing it to look sloppy.

We could use a Brother labeler, but I have no idea how long the label will hold up.

The last thought is to use calligraphy and laquering it to protect.

So, does anybody have any experience/suggestions? Again, these have a "grip" surface which is essentially a thin veneer of plastic over the paint.

Thanks.

I always use a majic marker and put a #29 on the knob on my stick, and sometimes depending on the name of the curve on a stick, I can black out certain letters in it to spell out my name.

I put my name on the stick in plain view in magic marker so that if I leave it behind by accident (for instance, the one left on the bench if tossed from the game) it can find it's way back to me (hopefully).

Also, I write my name on the actual blade before taping it as well as near the handle (the part that will be covered by tape). That way, if there is ever any question (for instance, if they scrubbed my name off the visible part of the stick), I can lift the tape and have a look.

I think some kind of permanent ink stamp would be the best method. A two digit stamp should do the trick to get each player's number on their sticks.

Perhaps peeling back the grip over the nameplate before printing would work. Printing on the plastic grip might wear away.

I miss getting Sullivan Responses, it made my life really easy. The curve I like and my name on it. :P

I use ugly curves and too stiff a flex so I have built-in theft deterrence. Other than that, I just mark my # on the knob.

I just keep my sticks by my side at all times! I think that no matter what you do to it, that person that stole it can cover up your marking. Besides, I am not going to be inspecting every Synergy SiCore Grip I see. AND I hope the moron who steals my stick would not play in my league, that would just be dumb.

I had a friend leave his stick on the bench, he forgot it and well it turned out he lost it. One nite he was waiting for a ride at the rink and watching some old guys and lone behold he found his stick. He had put a little Canadian flag at the bottom near the blade, this is how he recognized it.

Usually fire up a number on the tape and lately I've been marking my name in the part where the orginal players name was.

Theft isn't limited to sticks. One more than one occasion, people have stolen items from the lockerroom (money, credit cards). Hell, once someone even stole a car (took the remote, walked around the parking lot, and clicked until he found a winner).

We'd lock the doors, but our games are often so late, you can't check a key out at the desk, plus, people can get in through the other lockeroom due to the connected bathrooms.

Most of the time this happens if our game is directly following high school hockey. Too many people milling around to watch who's coming and going through the locker room.

Someone did catch a young kid (I'd guess freshman) in the locker room when he shouldn't have been. It was pretty ugly. I'm quite sure it left an impression (probably about a size 12 impression) on him.....

As far as marking skates I use a label maker and put my last name on the outsole and put another one up inside towards the toe where you can't see unless you look real hard. Just a little quirk.
