Mighty Burke's in Anahiem

I think when you have so much money, you don't care about losing money anymore and you buy things(his interest) for fun and a team could be one of those things.

Begs the question...if the NHL is losing so-o-o-o-o much money, why in the hell would Mr. Samueli want to buy into it.

I mean, I'm sure he's a smart busniessman, and smart businessmen don't buy businesses that lose money.

Do they?

"HMMMMMMMMM?"

He owns the building. The team is worth the money as a way to provide income to him as a tenant. Any team in the NHL that doesn't own their own building is at a distinct disadvantage.

Ah, I see. So now the "building" can continue to post gains, while the "team" loses money. I guess it's all in how you do the books.

Exactly. That's how Davidson does it in Tampa Bay. Doesn't make money on the team, makes money on the building and all of the concerts he gets in there every year.

BTW Chadd, do you have big party planned for when you hit 10,000 posts. You're way ahead of anyone.

Quite the milestone for an 18 month old forum.

Big plans, you're all invited over to help me move to my new house. ;) It just shows how much free time I've had over the last year or so.

Back to the original Burke thread....just saw an interview on TSN with him as the new Anaheim GM...When Healy asked if he'd be interested in Naslund if the new CBA makes him an UFA Burke replied. "I don't want to get fined on my first day on the job"

I guess that's a yes....

Classic Burkie

I picked up somewhere that for the '05/06 season they'll be the Ducks, after that they'll consider a new name.

I think the Raiders would be funny.

Last I heard they were considering the "California Golden Seals" as their permanent name if they secure the rights.

I have a feeling that he wouldn't have bought the club if a new CBA wasn't on the horizon that appears to be a lot more owner-friendly than the last one.

Tom Golisano, the new owner in Buffalo, has said on more than a few occasions that he wouldn't have bought the club if Bettman hadn't guaranteed him a new economic landscape once the CBA expired. He said, and the NHLPA have said, that owning the Sabres under the old system did not make any sort of economic sense.

Honestly, at this point, anything is an improvement. Besides, "California Golden Seals" actually has some history behind it.

If anything, I think he'll just drop the "Mighty" part of the name. As an Anaheim resident, I like the name Ducks, just hate the "mighty" part. As far as the "Seals" name, I don't mind it, and I don't think California will be part of the name.

Yeah, I grew up in Anaheim and I like Anaheim Ducks or Anaheim Golden Seals, no California for sure....we've been through that with the 'Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim'

I saw the ones on SportsNet News. I'm going to miss him (in Vancouver).

After Nonis had broken down accepting the Vancouver GM job, Burke called him a "big baby..." in jest.

Tony Gallagher, a columnist for The Province (Vancouver newspaper), had a running feud with Burke, and even he had only good things to write after Burke was unveiled as the Anaheim GM. Burke doesn't suffer fools gladly, so there should be a lot of interesting new feuds brewing up.

Do you guys think Babcock can get away from the Trap? If not, Burke might bring in another coach.

I give Burke props for helming entertaining teams, that do not feature the trap. Other than that, I don't have a lot of respect for the guy, especially after the way he handled the Bertuzzi-Moore situation.
