most durable equipment you've ever had?

Recommended Posts

or the longest lasting. i know a couple guys who play with elbow pads/should pads that they've had since they were 8 or 9 (they're all 16-17 now), and guys with old skates/gloves.

i've had to change most of my stuff from me growing out of it or it breaking, but i've had a prostock novius for 2 and a half years now and it's still going strong (chips in the blade and shaft but the blade is still stiff)

The Easton Ultra Graphite blades were tanks. I think I went through half a dozen shafts before I broke a blade.

I have/had some old Jofa 5090 shinguards and 5066 elbowpads that lasted forever. I upgraded to 9090 and 9066 respectively only due to my fear of 5 years of bacteria....and because I'm a gear junkie. But the 50xx could still go if they needed to after a nice bath.

I've outgrown alot of equipment over the years or changed because of the Team colours. I've had some Winwell shinpads that are in their sixth season, but should be gone by X-mas. Had my cage for about 3-4 years. Elbows about the same, I never want to change my Elbow pads or shoulder pads, but they break or deteriorate, the other stuff I tend to like changing.

Just retired Koho Pro Revolution Shin Pads from 1995. These pads were basically indestructable! It was just time to get a more tapered shin pad. These were getting the Craig Ludwig phonebook look to them. I replaced them with Nike V-14 shins. I also had a pair of CCM EP-1 Pro elbow pads from the early 90s. I always wear a long sleeve shirt to save the ep's from total sweat saturation. These pads fit great, old donut style with leather covered elbow. I replaced the straps and new velcro to keep them going. They were replaced last year by Nike V-12 elbows. My gloves are mid 90s Cooper Armour Foam Pro Model, nylon knit 4 roll short cuffs. These gloves are light and shaped perfectly. I rotate 4 pair so the palms last forever but each pair feels as good as the other. I always repalm them when necessary. Peranis closed these out in 1997. I got 2 pair from them for $60 pair. One of the pairs is a St Louis Blues special make up for Brett Hull. His name is written in ink on the back of the glove. It has a custom tacky black palm and added cuff protection for slashes. He never used them. They were fresh when Peranis sent them to me in 1997!

What's your impressions of the V-14 shins? Are they a fairly wide pad? I've had them on once and they were comfy, I just can't remember the width of them.

The Jofa shinpads most def. Had mine for like 8 years until a kneecap cracked. The old Easton A/C shaft lasted me 3 or 4 years as well as that silver alu with green letters and a little sandpaper like finnish. That one went even longer and I passed it to another guy after I had grown out of it. Also my first leather gloves were the original Easton Air Gloves circa 1990. The Model # was 9000 or something like that. They lasted me about 4 season, got repalmed and then passed on to a kid who used them another couple of years.

I like the V-14 shins a lot. They are tapered and hug your calf well with the outside wing protection. The interior knee cap is well shaped to keep your knee snugly in place. Plus there is a removable (for drying purposes) extra Nike Air pad to contour the interior of the pad to your leg. The outside knee cap with the center square looks strange before you put your sock on but on ice, it is not a problem. The overall protection and weight for the amount of pad is excellent. My only problem is the strap system. The bottom strap I cut off for two reasons: first it was too short and second it was too short! The top strap wrap around the knee is not elastic, it is a nylon poly strap. There is absolutely no stretch to it so the critical give and take of flexing your knee with the shin pad is a problem. I am still working that one problem out. The Nike V-7 have the elastic strap around the knee so I will have to fix the strap myself. Otherwise, the pads are excellent.

Didn't people end up bowing their aluminums if they didn't rotate the shaft once in a while?

Yup. That was true. Even 'til this day I still rotate my graphite shafts. It's a little quirk I developed I guess.

i rock a pair of old school cooper shoulders that my uncle used to wear when he played high school hockey. They're a good 20 years old and still going strong!

Other than those, the one piece of equipment that took the biggest beating were a pair of gear full factory gloves i had awhile back. I used these for a good three years playing both ice and roller a few times a week, and the palms never got the tiniest of holes in them. I used to go through gloves like nothing. I had to retire them last year though because they became a bio-health hazard from the stench. otherwise i'd prob still be wearing them. paid $35 for the things and they were indestructable.

17 year old Canadien elbow pads. I'm still using them and have no current plans to replace them.

16 year old Bauer Supreme 3000's. This will be my first year not wearing them. I retired them not because they were worn out, but because I wanted to treat myself to a new pair.

My best friend is using an 18 year old Cooper helmet of mine for pick up games.

Helmet and shoulder pads that I bought in 1992.

I think the best old equipment I've seen was last year at the Hall of Fame. Our contact there brought us to a refrigerated room that was away from the exhibition area. He pulled down a New York Rangers hockey bag. It turned out it was Gretzky's, which, at the end of his last game, he just handed it over to the Hall.

It had pants, gloves, tape, laces, but the best were his shin guards. I don't remember what brand they were, but they had to be from the 80's. It looked like there would have hardly been any padding when they were new, but now they had epoxy all throughout to hold them together.

Isn't that amazing? Wayne could have had any equipment with ample protection, but he preferred these beat up, skinny shin guards.
